Day 3: What's happening today?

Take a look at the important events that would unfold on day three of the Rio Games 2016.

India will hope for its world number one shooter, Heena Sidhu, to produce something special.

The ever-dominant United States won the first gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics when Virginia Thrasher triumphed in the women's 10-metre air rifle event. The 19-year-old amassed 208 points across the nine rounds at the Olympic Shooting Centre.

But it was Australia who led the medals table at the end of day two with two golds in 4x100 women's freestyle swimming and 400m men's freestyle swimming. Hungary's Katinka Hosszu crushed the world record in the women’s 400-metre individual medley to win her first Olympic gold.

It wasn't a great outing for India as its star-studded tennis contingent crashed to first round defeats in the men's and women's doubles. It also suffered first round losses in the table tennis event. The shooters, too, failed to clinch any medal. The hockey team's 3-2 victory against Ireland, however, was a consolation.

The Indians will be looking to better their performance on the third day with world number one shooter Heena Sidhu taking part in the women's 10m air pistol. Gymnastics sensation Dipa Karmakar will also be in action along with the women's archery team and the women's hockey team.

There are 14 gold medals to be won on the third day of the Games.
