Vijay Kumar... Silver in Shooting, 25m rapid-fire pistol; London 2012.

In the star-studded Indian shooting team in London, Vijay Kumar wasn’t among the brightest of prospects. His form in the run-up to the Olympics did not raise great expectations either. Besides, he could only finish seventh in the Asian Championship.

But a true champion knows when to up his game, and Vijay did so at the London Olympics. With a splendid score of 585, he qualified for the final of the 25m rapid-fire pistol. The shooter from Himachal Pradesh then held his nerves commendably to win the silver.

To put his performance in perspective, you would have to rewind to the World Cup held at the same venue earlier that year where he was placed 23rd. From there to the Olympic silver medal was one incredibly journey indeed.

Vijay, however, could not make it to Rio. At 30, age is still on his side. So he could well be around when Tokyo hosts the 2020 Olympics.
