Elavenil Valarivan shoots silver in Universiade

After qualifying at the top with a University record of 630.8, Elavenil Valarivan shot 249.0 in the final, and was beaten by Lucie Brazdova, who shot 250.3 at the 30th Universiade in Napoli.

Elavenil Valarivan had won the Gold Medal at the 2018 International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Junior World Cup in Australia and she also created a world record at the junior level by scoring 631.4 in the 10m air rifle qualification round.

Elavenil Valarivan bagged the women’s air rifle silver medal in the 30th Universiade in Napoli, Italy, on Thursday.

After qualifying at the top with a University record of 630.8, Elavenil shot 249.0 in the final, and was beaten by 1.3 point by Lucie Brazdova of the Czech Republic. Such a high quality fare was no surprise from the three-time Junior World Cup gold medallist, as Elavenil has been regular in the Indian women’s team behind Anjum Moudgil and Apurvi Chandela who have both secured Olympic quota.

In the World Championship in Changwon, Korea, last year, Ellavenil had bagged the junior silver after scoring 631.0 in qualification.

‘’I am thrilled with the achievement and want to thank all my coaches who have trained me so well’’, said Elavenil, who is groomed under Project Leap of Gagan Narang Sports Promotion Foundation.

‘’I am proud of Elavenil. She is a great shooter and I believe she has all the ingredients to become a champion’’, Gagan Narang said.
