National Shooting Trials: Moudgil, Bhanwala stand out

Anjum Moudgil nicely settled into the long form of the most arduous rifle event, the women’s 3-position, as she not only topped the table in both the trials but presented improved scores, in the shooting National selection trials at the Dr. Karni Singh Range, Tughlakabad.

Shooting 120 shots, as compared to 60 till last season, Anjum returned scores of 1,163 and 1,155 in qualification over two days. In the 45-shot final, featuring 15-each in the kneeling, prone and standing sections, Anjum scored impressive totals of 454.6 and 456.3 to push Gaayathri NIthyanandam and Tejaswini Sawant respectively to the silver spots over the two days. Gaayathri did well to bag the third place in the first trial.

Bhakti Bhaskar Khamkar and Shirin Godara took turns to top among the juniors in the 3-position event.

In women’s air pistol, Mahima Turhi Agrawal topped one point ahead of World junior champion Yashaswini Singh Deswal, after having topped qualification with 581. However, former world record holder and a dominant force in women’s air pistol in the last two Olympic cycle, Heena Sidhu could muster only 565 and missed qualification by seven points. The women were shooting 60 shots on par with men, as per the latest direction of the international federation, after having shot only 40 till now. Another Olympian, Annu Raj Singh, also missed qualification for final with 570.

In men’s 25-metre rapid fire pistol, Anish Bhanwala continued to assert his dominance by bagging both the men’s and junior top positions, after having impressed in qualification with a total of 582. He had topped in both the men’s and junior events earlier as well, and had won the national championship in Kerala.
