Olympic silver medallist Vijay Kumar had to shoot with a borrowed weapon in the ongoing Munich World Cup on Saturday as his pistol has been lost in transit by the airline.
Vijay had boarded the Lufthansa flight and had paid ‘handling charges’ of an additional EUR 230 for the weapon box, which had the pistol and other equipment. “I boarded the flight at 2.40 a.m. on May 24, with one weapon box, and one normal clothing bag. Even after two days, the airlines have not found my gun case,” said Vijay when contacted in Munich.
Vijay shot with a borrowed weapon from compatriot Gurpreet Singh, in the MQS section, and understandably was not at his best.
Big loss
“The pistol cost EUR 2000, the grip EUR 1000 and other things including the shooting shoes about EUR 1500. I have been visiting the airport every day, but they have not still traced the weapon box,” said Vijay.
He does have travel insurance, but isn’t sure whether it would the high cost of the weapon.
Vijay intends to will press charges against Lufthansa if the gun box is not found.
The incident raises a huge question mark about the efficacy of security.
