Queries Corner

Which player has appeared for most IPL sides? And for which sides?

P Sunil, Kottayam

At the end of the 2018 season, Australian Aaron Finch has the distinction of appearing for seven IPL teams, the most by any player in the competition. The details are as follows:

How often has India won the opening Test match of a series in England, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand ?

— Arjun Marwah, Surat

India has won the opening Test of a series on six occasions in SENA countries: three times in New Zealand and once each in England, South Africa and now in Australia. Before the ongoing series, India had won the series on three occasions, lost one and drew one, while doing so. The details are provided below:

In 1968 (4 matches) in New Zealand (series won 3-1) in Dunedin by 5 wickets (Feb 1968)

In 1976 (3 matches) in New Zealand (series drawn 1-1) in Auckland by 8 wickets (Jan 1976)

In 1986 (3 matches) in England (series won 2-0) at Lord’s by 5 wickets (June 1986)

In 2006 (3 matches) in South Africa (series lost 1-2) in Johannesburg by 123 runs (Dec 2006)

In 2009 (3 matches) in New Zealand (series won 1-0) in Hamilton by 10 wickets (Mar 2009)

In 2018 (4 matches) in Australia (series in progress 1-1) in Adelaide by 31 runs (Dec 2018)

Australian Marcus Harris, on his Test debut, made identical scores of 26 in each innings. Is this the first time by a debutant?

— S. Kartik, Vellore

This is the first time any Test debutant has made a score of 26 in each innings of his Test debut. However, six other batsmen, on their Test debut, have made higher identical scores in each innings. Here’s the full list:

Don Taylor 36 & 36 for South Africa, Feb 1914

Abid Ali 33 & 33 for India, Dec 1967

Soumya Sarkar 33 & 33 for Bangladesh, Apr 2015

Bernard Tancred 29 & 29 for South Africa, Mar 1889

Arthur Carr 27 & 27 for England, Dec 1922

Mark Ramprakash 27 & 27 for England, Jun 1991

Marcus Harris 26 & 26 for Australia, Dec 2018

Note: For the record, the previous highest scores by an Australian debutant was 16 & 16* by Graham Yallop in Sydney in January 1976.

In the recent Adelaide Test match all 10 Australian batsmen were dismissed ‘caught’ by Indian fielders/wicket-keepers in the second innings. Has this happened before for India?

— Srihari Rao, Visakhapatnam

This is happening for the seventh time for India in Tests — the last one coming nearly 28 years ago in February 1992 also in Australia at the WACA in Perth. Indian fielders have now done this twice against New Zealand and Australia and once each against England, West Indies and Pakistan.
