India’s top ranked tennis player Prajnesh Gunneswaran put up a fine display to upset world number 67 John Millman and claim a 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 win at the Los Cabos Open in Mexico on Tuesday.
The Indian southpaw, ranked 90 in the world, will face either world number 28 Taylor Fritz or German qualifier Dominik Koepfer in the second round.
Prajnesh got off to a great start as he broke the Australian in the first game and followed it up with another break in the fifth game to race to a 4-1 lead. Millman broke back the next game, but the Indian held on to take the first set 6-4.
However, the Aussie made a strong comeback in the second set to take a 4-0 lead in quick time. Prajnesh managed a break, but Millman broke once again in the sixth game and wrapped up the second set at 6-1.
The deciding third set was a contest of nerves and it was the Indian who came out strong. He squandered a breakpoint opportunity in the second game but claimed the all-important break in the fourth game to lead 3-1.
The pair then held serves over the next three games and the scoreline read 5-2 with the Aussie serving to stay in the tie. However, it was the Indian who prevailed as he pocketed the win off his third match point.
