Nadal out of Laver Cup with hand injury

Rafael Nadal said his hand was swollen and that he was pulling out of the tournament with deep regret.

Nadal was scheduled to partner Roger Federer in the much-anticipated doubles match against John Isner and Jack Sock.

US Open champion Rafael Nadal has pulled out from the ongoing Laver Cup in Geneva due to a wrist injury. The announcement was made a few hours before the start of the final day’s play following consultation with the competition doctor.

The world no.2 began his Laver Cup campaign yesterday with back to back matches in the night session. First, he defeated Canadian Milos Raonic 6-3,7-6(1) in the final singles match of day 2 and then partnered Stefanos Tsitsipas in their 4-6, 6-3, 6-10 loss to the pair of Jack Sock and Nick Kyrgios.

Nadal was scheduled to partner Roger Federer in the much-anticipated doubles match against John Isner and Jack Sock. He, then, had to play Kyrgios in the first singles match of day 3. However, the fans have been left disappointed as they will not be seeing ‘Fedal’ in action on Sunday.

 

Nadal, through the official Twitter of Laver Cup, expressed his disappointment: “I’ve had an amazing time playing here at the Laver Cup and I’m so disappointed I’m not able to play again today, but I have some inflammation in my hand and I need to rest.”

 

Team Europe captain Bjorn Borg was quick to announce the changes and under the Laver Cup rules,  Team World’s captain John McEnroe was notified immediately. While Tsitsipas will replace Nadal in the doubles match, Dominic Thiem will compete with Kyrgios in the singles.

Team Europe currently leads 7-5 against Team World. The first team to reach 12 points wins the cup.

This year is the first time the tournament has been played since being added to the ATP Tour.

Europe won the 2018 edition 13-8 in Chicago.
