Australia’s Glenn Maxwell registered the highest score by a No. 6 batter in ODIs, breaking the record previously held by Kapil Dev, during the ODI World Cup match against Afghanistan at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Tuesday.

Maxwell ended the knock at 201, becoming the first batter to score a double hundred while chasing, to secure a stunning three-wicket win against the Afghans.

Maxwell joined hands with skipper Pat Cummins when the scoreboard read 91/7. The Aussie duo put on a 202-run partnership, the highest for the eighth wicket in ODIs.

Maxwell’s effort ensured a semifinal spot for Australia and also guarantees it a top-three or top-four finish, meaning it will not face India in the semifinal.

The 35-year-old Aussie batter, who was struggling with severe cramps, hit 21 fours and 10 sixes against a hapless Afghan bowling attack.
