Babar Azam: This was the team's effort, and the early wickets were very helpful. It gave us a lot of confidence and our spinners were very good as well. We applied our plans and got the results. We, the openers, kept it simple and built a partnership and because the wicket was getting better so we just wanted to keep batting till the end, which we did. It won't get easier just because we beat India. We will take the confidence, but we're taking it one match at a time, and there's a long way to go in the tournament. We prepared well, and just kept the history out of our mind. We needed quality practice, and warm-up matches, and even our domestic tournament and those games gave us a lot of confidence. Virat Kohli : We didn't execute properly. Credit where it's due and Pakistan outplayed us today. They started brilliantly with the ball, and 3 wickets for 20 runs was not a good start. We needed wickets early but with the bat they gave us absolutely no chances. It played slow in the first half and hitting through the line was not that easy as it was in the second half, after 10 overs. We needed those 15-20 extra runs and for that we needed a good start but Pakistan's bowling didn't allow us to get those extra runs. We could make the argument of getting in another slower bowler, but it's important to stay composed and understand our strengths, because with the dew the slower bowlers couldn't be effective either. This is just the first game of the tournament, not the last. |
Shaheen Afridi, Player of the Match: It is the good wishes of my parents and all Pakistanis. Very happy with my performance. The plan was to bring the ball back in. I was just trying to swing it and I was just looking to give the team a breakthrough. That was what I practiced in the nets as well yesterday. Batting against the new ball was tough. The credit goes to Babar and Rizwan for the way they played. All teams are good in the tournament and we will look to carry this momentum through and go to the finals.
The streak is over for India and it comes down with an absolute thrashing from Pakistan. Clinical up-front with the ball, clinical with the bat. A reward for a thorough master-class. India on the other hand, will have plenty of questions to answer in the journey ahead.

PAK 112/0 in 14 overs: They are storming away with this! Shoddy bowling from Jadeja as he continues to fend short and serve juicy dollies for Babar. He swivels and pulls off with grace and finds the boundary at cow corner. Jadeja strays to the pads and this time Babar slides it down leg for another FOUR.
PAK 100/0 in 13 overs: 100 up for Pakistan and it's FIFTY for the skipper! Rizwan smokes CV for a six off the short ball and Babar follows suit with a massive six over long-on. Pakistan 52 away from a historic win.

PAK 85/0 in 12 overs: All too easy at the moment. Jadeja attempts to bowl flat at the stumps but Babar and Rizwan continue to pierce the gaps on the on-side. India has lost a tooth or two in its defence.

PAK 80/0 in 11 overs: Imperious from Babar! Bumrah touches full outside off and Babar tonks him over cover for FOUR. Boom comes back with a nagging yorker that nearly crashes into the stumps.

PAK 71/0 in 10 overs: Babar pierces the gap between backward point and short third man for four. Tight run from Babar and Bhuvi gets a direct hit at the non-striker's. Agony, agony for India as the big screen shows the replay. Babar is completely off balance but just manages to ground the ball in time before the ball hit the stumps.

PAK 35/0 in the 5 overs: Pakistan on the charge! Babar lofts Shami off the slot over mid-on for FOUR. Excellent batting from the skipper as he instantly gets off strike with a single. Short from Shami and Rizwan creams it past square for FOUR! Shami has a wry smile on his face as India is slowly tapering off in its defence.

PAK 22/0 in 3 overs: Bumrah misses the yorker by a whisker and Babar whips it through mid-wicket for FOUR! This guy's an absolute sight to behold. Bumrah follows up with a sharp inswinging yorker but Babar does well to keep it out.

PAK 18/0 in 2 overs: Bang goes Babar! Shami offers a hint of width and Babar laces it through covers for a cracking boundary! Shami nearly squares him up with a ball that moves off the seam away from the middle-stump line.

PAK 10/0 in 1 overs: Rizwan on a roll straightaway! Bhuvneshwar gets some shape on the away-swinger first up but Rizwan follows up with an easy flick through mid-wicket for FOUR. Bhuvi drops on length and Rizwan pummels it over mid-wicket for SIX! He's picked the bones out of that.

Perhaps for the first time in their six T20 WC encounters, Pakistan surely seems to have had complete control over India. A sizzling opening spell ripped apart India's premier openers in a flash. Rohit had no clue against that searing yorker, neither did KL stand a chance against the fiery inswing. The mantle once again fell on Kohli and under soaring pressure, he withstood the opposition once again. The slow fifty wouldn't have helped India's case for a big finish but it has ended up with a total that could just about make this a stiff chase. Can India dislodge the the in-form Babar and Rizwan early to put the pressure back on Pakistan?
IND 151/7 in 20 overs: Rauf to Pandya. OUT! Straight up in the air and taken comfortably by Babar at cover! Bhuvi manages to find three runs to finish and IND has 151 on the board.

A fine recovery led by the skipper comes to an end. Bhuvi's in at 7. He finds a single first ball and Hardik gets on strike. Full toss outside off and Pandya smokes it through point for FOUR! And a free-hit to follow as Shaheen oversteps. Shaheen hits the length and Pandya misses. He runs through and Shaheen concedes five overthrows! Attempts for a throw at the non-striker's and misses. Pandya cannot hold back his smiles.

IND 110/4 in 16 overs: Vintage Virat! Ali fends the ball onto the shoulders and Kohli swivels to put the ball past short fine for FOUR. Ali drills the ball full outside off and this time Kohli unleashes his classic extra cover drive to beat Babar Azam at mid-off for FOUR!

IND 100/4 in 15 overs: Shadab pins the ball in the perfect line and Kohli watchfully places it to the gaps to find singles. India is building itself to strike late but will it work tonight? Meanwhile, it's 100 up for the men in blue.
"Kohli has been exceptional with his running between the wickets. Acceleration and judgment have been top-notch. He realises hitting boundaries alone won't suffice. IND 67/3 in 11 overs: Rauf keeps it full and straight to both batters. Pant tries his luck with a few rash strokes but only gets a couple of singles.

IND 60/3 in 10 overs: Top shot from Pant! Hafeez comes around the wicket and slides the ball in sharply to Pant who fiercely cuts behind backward point for FOUR.
IND 52/3 in 9 overs: Shadab beats Pant's blade with a sharp googly. Pant shows his restless side as he lobs one straight down the ground with no timing on it. Two runs with no fielder in sight. Shadab comes over the wicket to Pant and drops short. Pant quickly sits on one feet and paddles the ball over short fine leg for FOUR and that's 50 up for India.
IND 43/3 in 8 overs: Pant attempts a reverse-sweep and misses. Rizwan grabs the ball and asks for a review! He is pretty sure even as umpire Erasmus is unmoved. Pakistan loses a review as there's clear daylight between bat and ball on the replays. Pant and Kohli continue to rotate strike albeit with a couple of risky running between the wickets.

IND 39/3 in 7 overs: Fine start for Shadab as he cramps Pant for room in the crease. Just the three singles off it and Pakistan continues to build the momentum.

IND 36/3 in 6 overs: Ali to Suryakumar. OUT! EDGED AND TAKEN!!! That's a loose stroke from SKY. Ali pushes the ball away from his reach outside off-stump and Surya makes a tame attempt to push at it. The ball clips the edge and Rizwan completes a sharp catch. India in tatters in the Powerplay.

India has its openers in the hut under 15 minutes. SKY walks in at 4. Shaheen rushes him with some quicker stuff on the length. SKY gets a single before Kohli hands the strike back to him. IND 2/1 in 1 over: Three deliveries on the money and KL gets off the mark with a quick single. Shaheen to Rohit. OUT! A golden duck for Rohit! A fiery yorker from Afridi dents the Indians first up. Swinging from outside and traps Rohit plumb in front. He plants his front foot away and aims to flick it rather than playing straight. Big mistake there against Afridi's pace. The umpire raises his finger straightaway. Kohli in at 3. A probing away-swinger to start and Kohli leaves it on its way. He gets off the mark with a single to the on-side to finish the over. Hardik Pandya: I don't like to get too hyped by the situation, and my family make sure of that too. I stay away from social media because you do get excited and get the vibes. It's simple, and we leave emotions out of the way, and keep things professional. We make sure we tick the right boxes, and do the processes right. The back is fine, it was jittery, but I won't be bowling for now . I want to be able to bowl eventually, closer to the knockouts. The professionals and I both have to take the call about when I can have a bowl.
TOSS: Pakistan wins the Toss, opts to bowl first Virat Kohli: We are pretty happy with setting the target. We would have bowled first too, but the toss is not in your control. We are pretty balanced with our squad and you need to be prepared for it. We need to stay as professional as possible. We need to stay focussed on the processes. Everyone watches it closely all over the world. We can use that as a motivation, but we need to ensure we don't get too emotional and need to just stay professional. The pitch looks very different. Evenly rolled and there is no grass at all which was the case during the IPL. We expect the pitch to stay good all through and set a good total. The four not playing are: Rahul Chahar, Ishan Kishan, Ashwin and Thakur. Babar Azam: We are going to bowl first. We'll look to take early wickets and put pressure. Dew is al so a factor. We have had good practice sessions and am confident about our preparations. Pakistan's bowlers are known to trouble other teams but I am confident about our batting too. Haider Ali is left out. |

The T20 World Cup will be set alight when India and Pakistan meet in a big-ticket clash on Sunday.
There’s no doubt that the contest between the sub-continental giants will attract global interest even beyond the cricket fraternity. But both the teams, with face-offs having become as rare as a hailstorm in the Emirates, have been trying their best to play down the pressure-cooker scenario associated with the game.
Understandably so. More than earning the brownie points of scoring a win in the match-that-matters-the-most for their respective fans, India and Pakistan would be gunning to get their World Cup campaign off to an ideal start.

Moreover, with both the teams having hardly faced each other in the shortest format of the game - eight matches in 14 years, including the two famous matches in the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007 - there isn’t too much of personal rivalry on the field.
Chakravarthy the x-factor
In this respect, India will be hoping that Varun Chakravarthy, the mystery spinner touted to be India’s X-factor, will spin his web around the Pakistan batters, none of whom having faced him earlier.
Pakistan, on the other hand, will be looking forward to captain Babar Azam to guide its relatively inexperienced unit to glory. The fact that he will have the guidance of old war-horses Shoaib Malik and Mohammad Hafeez in the team - both of them feature in the 12 announced on Saturday - will certainly help it soak in the big-match pressure.

Both Malik and Hafeez were a part of the inaugural T20 edition 14 Septembers ago. For India, it’s only vice-captain Rohit Sharma who featured in that memorable edition in South Africa. Having excelled as a rookie in 2007, Rohit will be hoping for the likes of Rishabh Pant and Chakravarthy to deliver under pressure.
But more than the rookies, India will be hoping to get the balance right of its team. To resolve the muddle of a back-up bowler remains the key for India to start its crusade to regain the T20 World Cup after a prolonged gap on a winning note.
Playing Pakistan in its tournament-opener would certainly invoke the memories of the 2007 World Cup among fans. Thanks to a washout against Scotland, the game that finished with a bowl-out versus Pakistan was India’s first-ever match in a T20 World Cup. The bowl-outs are a history in cricket but India will be hoping for the same result on Sunday.
