IND vs AUS Highlights 3rd T20I: Australia beats India by five wickets in record chase; Maxwell smashes 47-ball hundred

Glenn Maxwell did just Glenn Maxwell things and pulled another rabbit out of the hat by successfully seeing through a near-impossible run-chase. He hit the joint-fastest T20I ton by an Australian, off 47 balls, to help his side chase down 223 runs in what was another run-fest in this series. This is now the highest score any team has successfully chased against India in T20I International cricket. Australia stays alive in the series and this is just the kind of inspired performance that could help the visitors turn a 1-2 deficit around. It is a pity though that Australia will miss six World Cup winners, including Maxwell, in the next two matches. They are returning home and their reinforcements have already arrived in India. Australia needs 21 runs to win off the last over. India will have to have five fielders inside the circle because of its slow over rate. FOUR! Short and pulled away to the boundary behind square-leg by Wade. AUS needs 17 to win off five balls. Wade goes inside out next ball but just a single for him at deep cover. SIX! Maxwell slices this over deep point and makes it 10 to win off three balls. FOUR! This is guided again over point by Maxwell and gets four more. 6 to win off 2 balls. FOUR! Full toss and hammered by Maxwell to the deep midwicket boundary. That’s a 47-ball 100 for Maxwell. FOUR! Hammered down the ground for a boundary and Australia wins by five wickets. 

FOUR! Wade steps out to Axar and drives this powerfully through covers for a boundary. Short on leg-stump and pulled away by Wade for a couple more. AUS needs 37 to win off 10 balls. FOUR! Wade steps out again and slices this over the cover fielder for another boundary. Axar bowls a wide trying to keep it out of Wade’s arc. Extra run given but umpires will go upstairs for a stumping. Wade survives and what is worse for India, it is called a no-ball because Ishan Kishan seems to have collected the ball in front of the stumps. SIX! Wade rubs salt into India’s wounds by hammering the free-hit for a huge six over wide long-on. FOUR-BYES! Maxwell misses the reverse-hit but Kishan also misses the ball behind the stumps and concedes four-byes. 

Prasidh is back. Wade gets a leading edge first ball and manages only a single. A couple more for Maxwell next ball as Prasidh darts in a slower one. Slow and short now and Maxwell misses the pull and vents his frustration. Slow and full and wide and Maxwell launches this high in the air and the ball lands safely, short of the fielder who comes running in from long-on. Dropped! Wade slashes hard outside off and Suryakumar spills a catch at cover. Bouncer goes over Maxwell’s head and called wide. Wide outside off again and Maxwell misses despite shuffling across. He wants it to be called wide and isn’t one bit happy. 

Last one for Arshdeep. SIX! Unbelievable hitting from Maxwell. He contorts his body to get into good position and then wristily flicks this over fine-leg for a maximum. SIX! Stand and deliver. Back to back sixes as he stands rooted in his crease and hammers this over long-on. Arshdeep bounces back by conceding just two singles off the next couple of deliveries. A single more each for Maxwell and Wade to end the over. AUS needs 49 off 18 balls. 

SIX! Avesh bowls out and Maxwell wants to give him a grand farewell. Massive maximum to start the over. Maxwell goes for the reverse scoop next ball but cannot connect. A brief pause in play as Maxwell wants to get his spikes cleaned. Wide outside off stump, pace off and Maxwell goes across this stumps to heave this on leg-side but misses. Next ball is thumped to long-on for a couple of runs. FOUR! Wide outside off again but this time Maxwell drills the ball through covers, beats the fielder in that position and finds the boundary. Another wide one outside off and chopped to point for just a single by Maxwell. 

Arshdeep comes back. He comes from round the wicket to Maxwell. Just a couple of singles off the first three balls. SIX! What a shot! Reverse lap shot and the ball sails over third-man to bring up Maxwell’s 28-ball fifty. 

FOUR! Bishnoi sends down a loosener. Short and on leg-stump and Maxwell flicks this to the fine-leg boundary. OUT! Tim David gone for a golden duck. The ball stopped on him a bit and David tamely chipped this to the cover fielder to depart first-ball! Wade is off the mark first ball with a paddle sweep for a single. A single and a dot ball to end the over. Bishnoi keeps the ball out of Wade’s hitting arc by pitching it wide outside off but just inside the tramline. Bishnoi ends with two for 32 from his four overs. 

Axar again. SIX! Launched over long-on for a maximum by Maxwell as Axar darts in a slower one. OUT! Stoinis goes. He makes room outside off but ends up slashing this straight to the cover fielder. Well-deserved wicket for Axar. 

Here comes Avesh again. Confusion in the middle between Stoinis and Maxwell after Stoinis slaps the ball to mid-off and takes off for a single. A direct hit and Maxwell would have been gone at the striker’s end. Just a couple off the first three deliveries. Beaten! Stoinis is leaden-foot in his crease and looks to drive the ball and misses. FOUR! He doesn’t miss this one. Width on offer and Stoinis punches this square of the wicket for a boundary. 

Axar will continue. FOUR! Maxwell gets low on one knee and cuts this in front of square to find the point boundary. Good come back by Axar. Just two singles off the next four balls as Maxwell and Stoinis both look to drive the ball but can’t middle it. Maxwell is beaten outside off as the over comes to an end. 

Bishnoi from the other end. Stoinis goes for a paddle sweep first ball but fails to connect. Next ball is cut away but straight to the point fielder. Short and sliding down leg but just a single as Stoinis clips it off his pads tamely. Hundred up for Australia in 9.3 overs. Maxwell cuts this away behind point and cover and Rinku keeps it down to a single with some good fielding in the deep. FOUR! On a good length and Stoinis muscles a drive through covers and finds the boundary. A dot ball to end the over as Stoinis defends this back to Bishnoi. 

Axar Patel into the attack. He straightaway puts the brakes on the scoring and also manages to beat Maxwell outside off by bowling a probing length that keeps the batter in two minds. Just three runs from the over and India can finally take a breather. 

Prasidh is back. FOUR! Maxwell welcomes him back with a boundary off the first ball. Short ball and pulled away with authority by Maxwell. Prasidh finally bowls a dot ball, or so everyone thinks, before the buzzer goes off for a no-ball for overstepping. SIX! Full and Maxwell clears his front leg and sends the free-hit sailing over deep midwicket for a huge maximum. Short and the ball goes off Maxwell’s gloves and over the keeper for a boundary. SIX! Another maximum from the over as 23 runs come from the over. Prasidh goes for 39 from his first two overs.

Here comes Bishnoi again. Maxwell on strike. A single off the first ball for him. OUT! Inglis is comprehensively castled as plays off the back foot thinking this is a regular short ball but this one is quick and slides in. Marcus Stoinis comes out to the middle, with Maxwell at the other end. 

Avesh continues. FOUR! Gently dabbed to the boundary at third-man by Inglis off the first ball of the over. FOUR! Dug in short and Head leans back and ramps this high in the air and it also goes the distance as the ball trickles to the boundary. OUT! Slow and short from Avesh and Head gets a top edge trying to pull this and taken at fine-leg by Bishnoi. Eleven runs off the last over of the PowerPlay. 

Arshdeep bowls his second over with a yorker which goes for a single. OUT!!!! Arshdeep bowls a slower one as Hardie steps out to hit the ball, but the ball clips the edge and into the keeper’s gloves. FOUR!!! Inglis starts off aggressive with a boundary as he scoops it over the fine leg. Inglis then takes a single and gives Head the strike. FOUR!!! Head spoils Arshdeep’s great over with a boundary in the last ball. 

Avesh Khan bowls his first delivery of the series, a short ball that is defended by Head for a single. Follows with a dot ball. Avesh almost finds Hardie’s edge as the ball narrowly misses the bat. Avesh tries a similar ball again but goes wide this time. Another dot-ball as India tries to slow Australia’s momentum. FOUR!!! Avesh bowls a short ball but Hardie steps out and slashes the ball towards the extra cover for a four. Avesh bowls a bouncer, this time with an extra bounce and ends the over with a dot ball. 

FOUR!!! Bishnoi starts his spell with a full-shot to Hardie who plays his first ball and drives it through the covers for a four. Hardie strikes it towards the point and gets two runs. The third ball turns inside but Hardie plays it across towards mid-wicket for another two runs. Bishnoi follows it with a wide. Bishnoi bowls it full and makes the ball turn inside towards the leg stump as Hardie steps out, but the ball hits the pads and goes for a leg-by run. Bishnoi’s last ball goes for a boundary as 15 runs come off of that over. 

Prasidh Krisha joins the attack, and concedes a boundary after a short bowl which is struck by Head through the gap in the covers. A similar delivery by Prasidh this time with an extra bounce takes Head by surprise, a dot ball. Another dot ball follows. Prasidh picthes it up towards the off-stump but pays the price as Head finds the boundary towarsds the deep mid-wicket. FOUR!!! Another boundary conceded by Prasidh Krishna, this time Head squares it towards point. Prasidh bowls it short and wide by Head strikes it straight over the bowler for a four. 

Arshdeep Singh starts the bowling attack. FOUR!!! A full length ball swinging outside, but Wade strikes it true towards the point and the ball goes for a four. Two dot balls follow. FOUR!!! Another out-swinger punished by Wade, who hit its it big towards deep point and the ball just bounces off for a four. Nine runs off of the first over!

India lost two early wickets, but Surya’s knock in the middle overs was enough for the home side to gain momentum and set the game up for Rituraj Gaikwad to finish it off in style. Gaikwad scores his first T20I century and helps India cross the 200-runs mark. Although Australia started its death overs well, the last two overs were too expensive for them as they now face a massive target to chase.

Maxwell bowls the last over. SIX!!!! Gaikwad scores his maiden T20I CENTURY in style with a big six towards the deep mid-wicket. FOUR!!! He follows it with a four towards the deep cover. The delivery was a no-ball and Gaikwad gets a free-hit as well, but just a single. Maxwell bolws a wide. Maxwell’s slower one is punished by Gaikwad who steps out and hits it towards long on. SIX!!!! Another short ball and another maximum towards long on. FOUR!!! Gaikwad finishes his big innings with a boundary. 30 runs of of the last over. Wade’s gamble with Maxwell backfires. 

Ellis starts the penultimate over with two wides and single, Gaikwad takes the strike again and is five runs away from his first international century. Ellis continiues the great oevr with a single and a dot ball. Ellis bowls a boucer which goes as a dot-ball. He scores another bouncer but this time, Tialk flicks it over the keeper for a double. A short struck well by Tilak towars the square leg for a four!! Two runs off the last ball, Gaikwad gets the strike for the twentieth over. 

SIX!!! A full length ball hammered for a six twoards long-off by Gaikwad. A wide ball follows. SIX!!! Gaikwad pulls the short ball and hits another maximum towards deep mid-wicket! FOUR!!! Gaikwad hits the perfect straight drive as the ball bounces off for a boundary. Hardie bowls wide off of the off-stump and get a dot ball. SIX!!! Third six for Gaikwad in the over as he sweeps the full ball towards deep square. 25 runs from that big over. 

Behrendoff who has had a great match so far joins the attack and concedes two-runs off his first delivery. A slower one this time goes for a single. Gaikwad steps out but Behrendoff surprises him with a quicker one, just a single. Yorker on the last ball, another single for India., Just six runs off of the over as Behrendoff ends his spell. 

Ellis joins the attack again and starts off with a slower one, India takes a single. He then bowls a full length ball which also goes for a single. A single and a dot ball follows. Ellis bowls it short and Gaikwad pulls it towards fine leg but doesn’t get the timing right, just a single. Another single, just five runs from the over!

FOUR!!! Gaikwad sweeps it towards the square leg and makes the boundary. SIX!!! Gaikwad steps out, opens his bat and hits it true towards the Cover. Sangha starts off expensive. 11 runs from the over as Sangha finishes his spell. 

Hardie bowls his third over to Gaikwad who is close to his half-century. FOUR!!!! Hardie bowls it wide off of the off-stump and concedes four runs as Gaikwad strikes it towards deep extra over. Hardie, under pressure bowls two wides in a row. FOUR!!! A very short ball this time and Gaikwad smashes it across towards deep mid-wicket and scores his 4th T20I half century!

Hardie bowls it too short again as the ball bounces over Tilak for a wide, third of the over. FOUR!!! Tilak finishes the over off nicely with another boundary as his pull shot completes the 50 partnership. 19 runs from that over!

Sangha joins the attack again and start off with two singles and a dot. The ball didn’t turn enough and goes for a wide. FOUR!!!! Gaikwad spoils the good over by Sangha as the ball is struck towards deep-mid wicket. Another boundary follows, this time in the deep cover.

FOUR!!! Tilak Varma lobs it towarss deep fine leg. FOUR!!! Tilak punishes Richardson again, this time opens the face of the bat and finds the gap in deep point. A single follows giving the strike to Gaikwad. FOUR!!! Gaikwad finishes the big over with another boundary towards cover. 

Hardie continues the bowling attack with a single off of the first ball, Surya takes strike. OUT! Hardie bowls a bouncer as Surya tries to hit it towards fine leg but fails to hit it true, the ball goes behind into the keeper’s gloves!

Tilak joins Gaikwad and plays a dot and a single. Another short ball by Hardie but Gaikwad slashes it towards deep square, takes a double. 

FOUR!!! Gaikwad finds the boundary in the last ball after a similar shot to the previous delivery. 

We are halfway there in the first innings as Surya and Gaikwad hold fort. FOUR!!! A well-timed drive by Surya towards long on, Ellis concedes a boundary on the 2nd ball. A single and a dot ball followes. Gaikwad takes a safe single towards mid on. Ellis bowls wide but Surya stretches out and strikes the ball, but only a dot. Six runs off of the over. 

Sangha comes back for his 2nd over and starts off with a single for Gaikwad. Surya plays a defensive shot towards cover for a change, a comfortable single follows. Gaikwad strikes it well towards square but a finds a fielder there. 

FOUR! Gaikwad steps out and plays a text-book cover drive and finds the boundary. 

FOUR!!! Hardie joins the attack and concedes a four straight away off of the bat. A single follows. 

FOUR!!! Surya finds another boundary towards deep point. 

FOUR!!!! Another boundary, this time towards deep square leg for Surya!

FOUR! Surya greets Sangha’s first ball with a four. The captain sweeped it behind toward deep fine leg for a boundary. Singles follow in the next two deliveries. Sangha spins it wide and almost finds Surya’ edge. 

FOUR! Sangha tries to bowl a quicker one and is punished as Surya edges it towarDs the third man for a four. 50 comes for India!

FOUR! Driven through mid-off by Gaikwad but those are the only runs that come for India in this over. Good start for Australia in the PowerPlay. 

Nathan Ellis into the attack. Gaikwad flicks one off his pads for a single at deep square-leg. SIX! Suryakumar scoops this fullish delivery from outside off over deep fine-leg. This is even fuller and Surya drives this to mid-on for a dot ball. SIX! Going down leg-side and Surya whips this behind for another maximum in typical SKY fashion. 

Behrendorff starts off his second over with a wide as this one angles too far across from Suryakumar. A couple of dot balls follow. Surya tucks this length delivery on middle on leg-side but Gaikwad doesn’t want the single and sends his skipper back from half-way down the pitch. Beaten! Four dots on the trot as this angles across again and whizzes past Surya’s outside edge as he looks to go for the drive. Six dot balls in a row after the first-ball wide. Top stuff from Behrendorff. 

FIVE-WIDES! Richardson’s struggles to find his line continue as he darts this on middle and the ball swings away outside leg and beats Wade to run away for five wides. 

OUT! Kishan goes for a duck as he slashes this from outside off-stump straight to the cover fielder. 

Suryakumar Yadav comes in and is greeted with an LBW appeal as Richardson gets the ball to seam into the right-hander but it hits him too high on the thigh. Swinging away wide outside off and Surya reaches out to squeeze straight to point for a single. 

OUT! Jaiswal is gone and Guwahati is silenced! He steps out to heave this on leg-side but edges it behind to Wade. Jason Behrendorff strikes early for Australia. Ishan Kishan comes in next. FOUR LEG-BYES! Length ball on the pads, Kishan misses the flick but the ball goes off his pads and to the boundary behind him. Behrendorff corrects his line, pitching it on a good length just outside off-stump. Two dots to end the over; just four runs from it. 

Kane Richardson starts off with a wide outside off-stump trying to make Jaiswal drive. First runs off the bat with Jaiswal dabbing this length ball on leg-stump to third-man for a single. Gaikwad beaten first ball with an in-swinger as he lunges forward to drive this on the off-side. Swinging away outside leg and beats the keeper for two wides. Richardson continues to try to make Jaiswal drive. He bowls another wide outside off before beating Jaiswal by pitching it closer to off-stump and beating the left-hander’s expansive drive. FOUR! Short and this is pulled away to the midwicket fence by Jaiswal. Short again and pulled behind square-leg for one more. Ten runs already for India in just five balls as Richardson tries to shake off the rust. FOUR! The slip was removed for this ball and as luck would have it, Gaikwad got an outside edge through the cordon and the ball raced away to the boundary. 

India’s young opening duo of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad are out to begin the proceedings. Jaiswal will be key for India in the PowerPlay, especially after he scored a fifty in the first six overs in the last game. Gaikwad, meanwhile, will look to up the ante today on what promises to be a belter of a wicket. 

Mukesh Kumar made a request to BCCI to be released from India’s squad ahead of the third T20I against Australia in Guwahati. Mukesh is getting married and has been granted leave for the duration of his wedding festivities. He will join the squad ahead of the 4th T20I in Raipur. Pacer Deepak Chahar has been added to India’s squad for the remainder of the series.

Suryakumar Yadav and Matthew Wade are in the middle for the toss. Australia wins the toss and elects to bowl. Travis Head comes into the XI for Matt Short. For India, Avesh Khan comes into the side for Mukesh Kumar, who is unavailable because of his wedding. 

The ground dimensions are 73 and 70 metres square of the wicket while the straight boundary is 83 metres. Matthew Hayden says the dew will come into play today. The pitch is hard and both Hayden and Deep Dasgupta reckon it will be a high-scoring game. The new ball though could move around a bit as there is a nip in the air. 

There is no overwhelming advantage for either pacers or spinners at this venue. While the quicks have taken 11 wickets at 9.27 runs an over, spinners have just five scalps but have been more economical (8.81 rpo). 

Out of the two T20I matches played at this venue, the batting first team and the side chasing have won one game each. While India lost to Australia by eight wickets in 2017, the host beat South Africa by 16 runs in a high-scoring game last year. 

Australia announced an updated squad for its T20 international series against India for the remaining three matches of the five-game series on Tuesday. World Cup winners Steve Smith and Adam Zampa have reportedly flown home ahead of tonight’s third match in Guwahati, while Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Josh Inglis and Sean Abbott will all return tomorrow.

IND vs AUS, 3rd T20I: Australia has task cut out against Indian batting firepower as Suryakumar & Co. eye series win

IND vs AUS Preview: With captain Suryakumar Yadav also in form, not many would envy Australia’s bowlers, who have to find a way to reduce the boundary balls somehow.
