Kieron Pollard: He (Powell) was phenomenal today. His partnership with Pooran almost got us over the line. We did well to take it as deep as we can. We can look at different ways as to how we could have gotten those 8 runs. At the end of it, we can look at so many ways. He (Chase) has bowled well. He came in and showed us something. Again he delivered for us. We can't just call batters out. Was a very good game. We sort of rectified our mistakes from the previous games.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar: I was just believing in myself, Rohit told me that if I can give just 9-10 runs it will be difficult for them, so I just backed myself with the yorkers. There was a bit of dew, but I still backed myself and it came out well. He (Powell) was hitting it pretty hard, probably 200kmph (chuckles). It's always tough to bowl yorkers with the dew. When we bowled the slower balls it wasn't gripping and I changed my plan not to bowl slower balls, so it totally depends on the wicket. These guys are very powerful and if you bowl in their zone and it gets difficult. (The body) Feels good and don't want to say anything more on that (laughs).
A sensational evening for Rohit's men at the Eden Gardens after being forced into difficult conditions this time around. With the dew settling in, a 187-defence was always going to be a difficult ask. India kept the West Indians under check before Powell and Pooran unleashed a measured attack on the bowlers but eventually let the chase dip too deep into the end. With 29 needed of the last two overs, West Indies was still in front with seven wickets to spare. However, an under-fire Bhuvneshwar Kumar sprang up with his best bits to restrict the batters to just four runs in the penultimate over while also dismissing the menacing Pooran.
WI 178/3 in 20 overs: Harshal tails the ball in to the blockhole and Powell can only manage a single. Harshal lines the ball well away from Pollard's reach as he pushes the ball to long-off for another single. 23 needed off four balls. Harshal hits the fuller length and Powell drills the ball down the ground for SIX! In the slot and BOOM! Powell muscles the ball over mid-wicket for a massive SIX and a win still in sight for the West Indies! 11 needed off two! Harshal dips in a fine slower-one and Powell fails to get underneath it. A single to finish as Pollard nudges the ball sheepishly down the ground. India edges out West Indies for its eigth consecutive T20 win! Rohit's men also take an unassailable 2-0 series lead.

WI 163/3 in 19 overs: Bhuvi goes full and Powell flicks it down to cow-corner for a single. A slower one rushes past Pooran's arc as it keeps low after pitching. High in the air and Bishnoi clinches a fine catch at cover! Bhuvi rolls in the slower-one as Pooran miscues a slog over long-on. Bishnoi jogs back and takes a tumbling catch. Pollard in at 5. A couple of singles to follow as Bhuvneshwar mixes up his lengths. Excellent from Bhuvi as he just concedes four runs in the over!

WI 159/2 in 18 overs: Harshal begins with a full-toss to the pads. Pooran pushes it down the ground for a single. A single for Powell as he gets to his fifty as well. Harshal holds his nerve as he rolls in another knuckle ball to Pooran who is beaten. Harshal maintains his composure as Pooran resorts to another single off the blockhole. Excellent stuff from Harshal as he dips one into the blockhole against Powell who swipes it past for another run. A short ball to finish and Pooran slides it across square leg for FOUR.

WI 150/2 in 17 overs: Chahar hits the blockhole and restricts the pair to a couple of singles. Short and Powell slams the ball high into the cow corner stands for SIX! Chahar rushes in another delivery as Powell pushes it down the ground for a single. Chahar strays to the pads but Pooran shuffles across to flick the ball for SIX over backward square. Back to back fifties for Pooran as West Indies waltzes into the driver's seat.

WI 134/2 in 16 overs: Bhuvi starts off with a fine delivery outside the off-stump before Powell fins a single through mid-wicket. Bhuvi pushes the ball further up and Powell clobbers the ball down the ground for FOUR! Pressure mounts on Bhuvneshwar as he slides another one outside the tram line. Straight up and Bhuvneshwar DROPS Powell! A deft slower bouncer outside the off-stump and Powell sends it straight up. Bhuvi sets himself well underneath the ball but spills a catch that could well seal the fate of the match.

WI 124/2 in 15 overs: Bishnoi drops one on length and Powell mistimes his pull down to long-on. Kohli motors along the field and gets to the ball within a bounce. Short again and Powell thumps it down the ground for FOUR. Powell mistimes another heave that flies just past Rohit at mid-wicket. Bishnoi gets it all wrong this time around. He offers room to Pooran with another short delivery. Pooran drills it through cover for another FOUR as West Indies steps hard on the gas.
WI 113/2 in 14 overs: Harshal rolls in the perfect slower-ball to beat Powell. Powell follows up with a powerful flick to cow corner for a single. Harshal surprises Powell with another slower-delivery that dips into hit his bat before rolling down to the fence for FOUR. 10 off the over from Harshal as West Indies continues to keep the required rate within reach.

WI 91/2 in 12 overs: Short and Pooran smashes it away through mid-wicket for FOUR. He follows up with a slower-one to beat Pooran's outside-half. Chahar straightens the ball further to hit Pooran's pads down leg. Chahar bumps one in and Powell swiftly pummels it flat to the mid-wicket cushions for SIX.

WI 73/2 in 10 overs: Chahal fends short and Pooran hammers one flat to Bishnoi at mid-wicket who drops a catch! Chahal loops one in and Pooran smacks a massive SIX over mid-wicket! A thunderous shot off his feet and the ball sails handsomely into the stands. Chahal tosses one outside the off-stump and Powell unleashes a blistering slog sweep across the field for FOUR.

WI 41/1 in 6 overs: Top-edge and Chahal completes a safe catch off his own bowling! The top-spinner flusters Mayers who drops to his backfoot once again but ends up chipping the ball straight up. Pooran is in at 3. Chahal floats one in to Pooran's pads and he does well to scoop it over fine-leg for FOUR. Chahal gushes in a flatter delivery outside the off-stump and seems like it has kissed King's blade before rushing into Pant's gloves. The umpire raises his finger while WI opts for a review. No spike on the ultraedge and King survives!

WI 34/0 in 5 overs: Chahar starts off with a knuckle ball to King who pushes it to cover and sets off on a single. He follows up with a sharp yorker to Mayers. In the air and King survives by a whisker! Chahar sends one in straight and King mistimes his slog down the ground. The ball falls inches away from Iyer who runs back from mid-on before eventually brushing the boundary cushions.

Make that four, as Mayers flicks one off the back-foot to mid-wicket for another run. A wide to follow as Chahal fends too short outside the tram line. He rushes one in and King mistimes a pull along the ground. A single to finish as King advances and drives deep to long-off.

WI 22/0 in 3 overs: Bhuvi squares up King with a beauty that sits up from length outside the off-stump to beat the blade. King pushes the next delivery through cover and finds two runs. A cheeky variation in pace from Bhuvi as he sends in the knuckle ball to foil King's plans for a pull. Bhuvi nips one in sharply and prompts King to nudge it away from the stumps. Bhuvi tosses one in the slot and Mayers crunches it through extra cover for FOUR.
WI 14/0 in 2 overs: King is beaten with a beauty from Chahar. He hits the length and straightens the ball as King misses a rash heave over mid-wicket. Chahar takes the ball further away from King's arc outside off-stump. He gets a single. Pronounced movement for Chahar as well as he takes one away from the left-handed Mayers. Chahar tails one in but concedes a full-toss. Mayers flicks it down to Kohli at deep mid-wicket. Width on offer and Kings creams Chahar down the ground for FOUR.

WI 8/0 in 1 over: A hint of shape as Bhuvi takes the ball away from length against King. He hits a similar line as King slices one down to third-man for a single. An excellent out-swinger from across the crease from Bhuvi. The ball angles towards the off-stump as Mayers pushes the ball forward. Bhuvi slides one down leg and the ball races past Pant for FIVE wides. Bhuvneshwar seems to have regained his rhythm. King treads watchfully as Bhuvi continues to extract prodigious movement.

A sensational stand between Rishabh Pant and Venkatesh Iyer has lifted India from a spot of bother. While Kohli's fifty set up the first-half, West Indies chipped away at regular intervals. Roston Chase continued to trouble the batters as he eventually accounted for Rohit, Kohli and Suryakumar. Nevertheless, Pant and Iyer pressed on the accelerator right after Kohli's departure as India managed to finish on a high. All eyes on the Windies chase. With the dew settling in, a challenge awaits the Indian bowlers as well.
IND 186/5 in 20 overs: Iyer drills Shepherd's fuller delivery through extra cover for a single to the deep. Shepherd drags the ball from Pant's arc and forces him to swing through the arc and get another single. Cleans him up. Shepherd fires one in to the blockhole and beats Iyer's blade to smash the stumps! Harshal walks in and gets off the mark with a single. Fifty for Pant as he knocks the ball down the ground and gets two runs. A single to finish as only seven runs come off it.

IND 179/4 in 19 overs: Pant has unleashed his new heavy bat with a massive one-handed thwack over mid-wicket for SIX! Holder finds his line as he drills the ball in on the blockhole. Holder strays to the pads and Pant scoops it past Pooran for another FOUR. Holder slides the ball down for a wide but Pant attempts for a quick single but is sent back by Iyer.
IND 164/4 in 18 overs: Shepherd hits the length as Iyer thumps the ball down the ground and gets three runs. 50-run partnership for Pant and Iyer. They have done well to stem the slip and pull things back for India. Iyer shimmies down the track and slaps the low full-toss through point for FOUR.

IND 152/4 in 17 overs: Holder rolls in the slower-bouncer and Iyer waits for it and tosses it over the mid-wicket fence for SIX! India crosses 150 as Pant, Iyer sneak in a couple of quick singles.

IND 139/4 in 16 overs: Cottrell bumps one in and Iyer swivels handsomely to flick the ball over short fine for FOUR. Short and Iyer hammers the ball over mid-wicket and falls inches short of a diving King before rolling across for FOUR. Runs in a flurry as Pant joins the act with another boundary. Cottrell errs in length once again as Pant crashes the length delivery beside square leg for FOUR.

More misery for Polly as Pant slices the ball past short third-man for another boundary.

A little help from Holder at the fence as he juggles the bowl over the lines. Excellent comeback from Chase, he cleans up Kohli! Drifts the ball in quickly as Kohli steps down the track but completely misreads the guile.

IND 98/3 in 13 overs: Smith hits the deck and Kohli gently flicks the ball to the on-side and comfortably finds two runs. Smith gets the ball to spring up to Kohli's shoulders, but he opens his arms gently to slide the ball down to third-man for FOUR. Smith wavers on his lines and concedes a couple of wides. Smith pushes the ball outside the off-stump and nearly clips the edge as Kohli shuffles back and forth in the crease.

IND 88/3 in 12 overs: Chase continues to fire in the quicker deliveries as Kohli attempts to step down the track and attack the offie. Two dots as the dew appears to settle in on the field. A couple of singles for the batters before Chase cuts one in sharply to Kohli who gets his bat down just in time.

Holder tightens his length to Pant and also drops in a slower-one to keep the left-hander wound to the crease. Holder sends in a slower-bouncer to Kohli who nearly drags it back to the stumps. A single to get off strike, nevertheless. Holder tosses the ball in and Pant slaps the ball across the line for FOUR.

Chase continues to push the ball into the batters but SKY easily maneuvers the ball through mid-wicket for a single. Jinxed it, perhaps! SKY lobs the ball straight to Chase and the West Indians are celebrating. The ball stops on him for a minute off length and all Surya could do is to chip it back to the bowler. IND 69/2 in 9 overs: SKY off the mark with a blistering square cut for FOUR! Hosein loops one in outside-off and Suryakumar's magical wrists do the rest. A couple of singles to follow. Surya pushes another fuller delivery through cover and sneaks in two runs to complete the over.

Chase continues to maintain his line of attack pretty straight, prompting the batters to create room to force the runs. Leading edge and GONE! Rohit falls as Chase drills the ball in on length. Rohit miscues another slog as Chase gushes the ball in. Beaten for pace there Rohit as the ball parries straight to King at cover who makes no mistakes this time. Shepherd attacks the stumps and Rohit miscues the ball high in the air and it clears the off-side boundary for SIX!

Holder nips the ball in and Kohli gets off strike with a single to square leg. Holder squares up Rohit with a delivery on the slot. Rohit nudges it down to the off-side and sneaks in a single. Holder troubles Kohli with another nip-backer outside the off-stump as Kohli gets an inside-edge to short mid-wicket. Holders fends one on the slot and Rohit hammers the ball over mid-wicket for FOUR.

IND 23/1 in 4 overs: Lucky escape for Rohit! He clears his front leg to heave across the line but Cottrell tucks him up. The ball lobs up straight and nearly jags back to the stumps before Rohit intervenes with his legs. A fierce cut and Rohit's dropped at point as King dives to his left and has a couple of juggles before the ball slips to the floor. Excellent from Cottrell as he pins Rohit under pressure with four dots. And Rohit breaks the rut with another cut past a diving point fielder for FOUR.
IND 18/1 in 3 overs: Kohli is off the mark with a nonchalant flick through square-leg for FOUR. Hosein tucks it in sharply but Kohli's up for it in a flash. Hosein squares him up. This time the ball spins away from Kohli, whiffing past the hanging blade outside off-stump. Hosein wafts one in and Kohli launches a paddlesweep for FOUR to fine leg.

IND 10/1 in 2 overs: Fine start for Cottrell with a hint of swing. He hits the length and lure Kishan to have a waft at the ball away from his pads. Cottrell beats the outside-edge once again. He brings in the ball a lot straighter and Kishan attempts another slice but misses. Huge appeal for a catch as Kishan swings his blade outside the off-stump. Umpire Nitin Menon is unmoved and WI opts for a review. Visuals suggest a clear gap between bat and ball, Kishan survives. In the air and GONE! Kishan holes out to point and falls for a five-ball duck. Cottrell lands this on the spot and gets the ball to straighten a decent bit. Hosein has overstepped and it's a no-ball. Free hit for Kishan. He heaves it to mid-wicket for a single. Hold on, Hosein oversteps again! This time Rohit's on strike. A low full-toss angling in and Rohit slams it straight to the cow corner fielder.

5:40PM IST: After a nervy start on debut, Bishnoi's quick recovery was an admirable sight. The wrong'uns weaved in by Bishnoi trapped the West Indies batters who seemed out of depth for most of his spell. Bishnoi grabbed the Man of the Match award after registering figures of 2/17 in four overs.

MATCH PREVIEW
The West Indies batters have to solve their issues against spin bowling should they look to beat India and save the series in the second fixture at the Eden Gardens on Friday.
Like a deer caught in the headlights, the Windies batters had no answers to Yuzvendra Chahal and Ravi Bishnoi's vicious deliveries. It limited their movement, footwork and most importantly, the mind.
Nicholas Pooran's counterattack ensured a competitive total (157/7), but the bowlers' lack of homework was visible as India chased the target down with seven balls to spare.
West Indies head coach Phill Simmons needs to have a word with the bowling group to tighten their line and length. They looked flustered by India's left-right combination from the top order to the middle. Off-spinner Roston Chase (2/14) was the only bowler who put his hand up - he choked the runs and picked up the wicket of Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma.
Fast bowler Odean Smith made a huge mistake by keeping the length slightly short against Rohit, a master puller.

The Caribbeans are expected to pull things back, especially because the second T20I will be the 100th for captain Kieron Pollard. But it remains to be seen if they field the same squad. Darren Bravo's inclusion in the XI could provide stability in the middle-order. And Dominic Drakes has the X-factor to turn the tide in crunch situations. He could be a replacement for Smith.
Jason Holder had missed the opener after getting hit on the chest in the training session. He is likely to be available. "Jason seems fine, he should be ready for the next game. I do not know the details of his niggle, so I cannot say about that," said Nicholas Pooran.
Plus, the West Indians are not used to the dew. They will have to find ways to negate that in the remaining games. "Dew was a big factor. The bowlers struggled to grip the ball, and the wicket played better in the second-half of the game," he added.

The Indians will be playing their natural game, and Rohit is likely to maintain the XI unless the hand injuries to Deepak Chahar and Venkatesh Iyer turn serious. The duo sustained blows to their right hand while fielding. Venkatesh, however, batted in full tilt and even hit a six to win the game for India.
Kuldeep Yadav could further add to the woes of the West Indies batters. The chinaman bowler is tough to read, and with Bishnoi snaking in from the other end, it will be challenging for the batters to tackle the duo. Chahal needs to sit out in that case.

Shreyas Iyer had to sit out the first game as he couldn't provide a few overs with the ball, which Venkatesh did. He is likely to feature in at least one game in the series.
Finally, if Virat Kohli - the second-highest T20I run-scorer - regains form, it will be the perfect finish for the host.
