That would be all from our side. The next ODI is on Friday at the same venue. Until then, good night.
Virat Kohli: "This is one of our sweetest victories in recent past. It is right up there purely because from 135-1 getting nine wickets is simply outstanding. I am a really, really proud man right now."
Prasidh Krishna gets his fourth as India beats England by 66 runs to go 1-0 up in the series. England bowled out for 251! They were 135 for 1. What a fightback this has been. Top-drawer stuff. Tom Curran the last man to be dismissed. Prasidh Krishna: "I didn't start well. They went hard, but we took wickets in a cluster. I just wanted to hit good areas, I thought after the third over I can't bowl full and hit the good lengths. I want to be called a hit-the-deck bowler, I'm better at it. I will go back, work on my lengths, and come back. I hope I can do it for the team for a long time."
ENG 251/9 in 42 Overs: India inching closer to victory. Just one wicket needed. England have collapsed in spectacular fashion, especially after the kind of start they got.
ENG 240/8 in 39 Overs: Bhuvneshwar and Krunal get their names on the wickets column as Moeen and Sam depart. India well and truly on top now. England need 78 runs in 66 balls with two wickets in hand. Adil Rashid joins Tom.
ENG 231/6 in 36 Overs: Bhuvi is back for his third spell. Just five off it. India continue to look for wickets. England bat deep. There's Tom Curran still to come after this. But given the early onslaught, all bowlers have made a remarkable comeback. England need 87 runs in 84 balls
ENG 221/6 in 33 Overs: Prasidh Krishna is back for another burst and straightaway gets a breakthrough, Billings holing out to Kohli at short cover. This has been a terrific comeback from Prasidh and India. Sam Curran joins Moeen Ali. Billings and Ali had a 41-run partnership.
ENG 199/5 in 30 Overs: India slipping in a few quiet overs. Billings gets a four off Kuldeep - England'as first boundary after eight overs - but the hosts seemed to have put a lid on the scoring rate for the time being.
ENG 185/5 in 27 Overs: Thakur gets two wickets in one over; this game has turned on its head. Morgan is caught behind before Buttler is adjudged lbw. Two new batsmen at the crease - Sam Billings and Moeen Ali. Krunal Pandya, back for his second spell, concedes only five. India are right back in this.
ENG 175/3 in 24 Overs: Thakur's golden arm strikes again. Bairstow falls for 94, holing out to Kuldeep at deep midwicket. The in-form Jos Buttler joins Morgan. India, realising they need to keep chipping away, turn to Bhuvneshwar Kumar. He continues to impress, just four off his fifth over.
INJURY UPDATES Shreyas Iyer subluxated his left shoulder in the 8th over while fielding. He has been taken for further scans and won't take any further part in the game. Rohit Sharma was hit on the right elbow while batting and felt some pain later. He won't take the field. |
ENG 165/2 in 21 Overs: Prasidh looks a different bowler after the double-strike. Working up good pace and bowling probing lines. Hits the hard length against Bairstow who has played and missed a few. Meanwhile, just as Kuldeep was getting into a nice rhythm, he offers a full toss and Morgan hammers it over deep mid-wicket. Bairstow enters the nineties with a boundary to fine leg. Change in bowling as Shardul replaces Prasidh. Could've given the Karnataka pacer another over.
ENG 140/2 in 18 Overs: Two wickets in two overs for Krishna on debut! He gets Ben Stokes. Could've been a third, but Virat Kohli drops a simple chance of Morgan at slip . There was a run-out opportunity as well that went begging. A wicket maiden from Krishna. Kuldeep Yadav slips in two miserly overs. Dramatic passage of play.
ENG 135/1 in 15 Overs: A breakthrough for India at last. Debutant Prasidh Krishna gets Jason Roy courtesy a fine juggling catch by Suryakumar Yadav at point. Meanwhile, a spectacular Bairstow power-hitting is on display in Pune. He takes 15 off one Krunal over, including two back-to-back sixes. With Jonny batting the way he is, 318 doesn't look like a safe total anymore. India needed that breakthrough. They looked deflated. Ben Stokes is in at No. 3 in the absence of Joe Root.
ENG 107/0 in 12 Overs: Runs continue to flow. Thakur errs in line, and Bairstow flicks one over square-leg for six. He ends the over with a delectable straight drive. Both openers now putting on an exhibition of power-hitting as Bairstow brings up a 40-ball 50. Kuldeep Yadav, left-arm chinaman, comes into the attack and is straightaway taken to the cleaners by Jonny. What a start.
ENG 77/0 in 9 Overs: Roy hits a dazzling square drive off Bhuvi. That 22-run over from Prasidh has allowed the England openers to get into a nice rhythm. Shardul Thakur replaces Prasidh Krishna (3-0-37-0). Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer hurt his left shoulder while diving to his left to stop a boundary. He walked off holding the shoulder. Shubman Gill is his replacement on the field. Double change for India as Krunal Pandya comes into the attack now. He goes for 16 as Roy collects two fours and a six.
ENG 46/0 in 6 Overs: After a good first over, Prasidh bears the brunt. Roy hits back-to-back boundaries off his second over. Bairstow, then, breaks the shackles with four boundaries - two sixes and as many fours - off his third. 22 off Prasidh's third over. Meanwhile, Bhuvi continues being miserly.
ENG 13/0 in 3 Overs: If a ball is going to swing, you can trust Bhuvneshwar to do it. He is bowling a good, disciplined line and length. Prasidh Krishna, the debutant, is sharing the new ball. There's a loud appeal for lbw off Prasidh's bowling; Bairstow the man in question. India don't review. The impact was in line but the ball would've gone over the stumps. Prasidh working up good pace - north of 140 kmph.
Welcome back. Jonny Bairstow and Jason Roy to begin the chase. Bhuvneshwar Kumar with the new ball.
ENGLAND NEEDS 318 TO WIN.
INNINGS BREAK: India found itself in a bit of a wobble after losing the big wickets of Kohli (56) and Dhawan (98). However, a late flourish from Krunal and Rahul saw the host finish with a huge total on the board.
An emotional Krunal dedicates the knock to his father, who passed away in January. He could hardly speak to the broadcasters after the knock and brother Hardik was seen hugging him after the interview.
IND 317/5 in 50 overs: Fifty for Krunal on debut! The fastest in ODIs by a debutant. He raises his bat and points to the skies. This must be an emotional moment for the Pandya brothers.
Rahul brings up his 9th fifty now. Just when India needed him, he delivered and how! He also finishes the 49th with a mammoth six after Krunal, Buttler and Tom exchange a few words. STAND. AND. DELIVER.
The 100-run stand comes up in only 56 deliveries as Krunal hooks Wood to start the 50th over with a boundary. Rahul ends the innings on a brilliant note with a four.
IND 292/5 in 48 overs: The fifty-run partnership comes up in no time as Rahul launches the slog sweep over short fine leg.
89 metres into the stands at backward square leg goes Krunal! He has hit this straight off the meat of the bat and doesn't look like he is playing his first ODI today. Seems like he has been doing it all along.
Rahul has just greeted Wood with a humongous maximum. It was a cross-seamer bowled right in the slot but it has flown up, up and away! Krunal doesn't want to be left back while the celebrations are on. Two balls later he has tonked one a couple of yards short of the fence for a four. And six again! The Indian dugout is going bonkers.
We have an update on captain Morgan, who had trudged off the field a while back - England team spokesman: "Eoin has split the webbing between his right thumb and index finger. He has had four stitches inserted by the England team doctor. He expects to be able to bat."
IND 250/5 in 45 overs: Stokes gifts a juicy half-volley to Krunal. And he chooses to explore the cover region this time. Four! His fourth of the day already.
Rahul goes downtown now to sign up for the boundary fest! Straight over the bowler's head for a maximum. Livingstone, in the meantime, stops a boundary with a stunning dive.
The 250 comes up for India with Rahul playing the slower ball through the line with the mid-off up in the ring. One bounce and four.
IND 218/5 in 42 overs: Into the stands! Rahul tees off, smoking a short-of-length delivery from Sam over deep midwicket.
Hardik goes... courtesy the softest of dismissals. The hard-hitting all-rounder opens the face of his bat and guides the ball right into the safe palms of Jonny Bairstow at first slip. Stokes pockets his third. The elder Pandya, on debut, comes to the crease and gets off the mark straightaway.
Krunal gets into the act in the next over, hammering Sam for two back-to-back boundaries. AND ANOTHER... It all runs in the family!
IND 197/4 in 39 overs: Slowly but steadily, Dhawan continues to climb. Just three runs off the over from Stokes. There are a number of yes-no-maybes while running between the wickets but the duo in the middle must ensure they don't lose a wicket here.
OH NO, SEEMS LIKE I HAVE JINXED IT! Dhawan falls only two short of what would have been his maiden century against England. It is his best against the side nonetheless; his previous best being 97 not out. Stokes bowls shorter again and Dhawan, while trying to drag the ball across from the off stump has played it straight to Morgan at midwicket.
We have an update on Billings' injury - England team spokesperson: “Sam Billings has sprained his collar bone joint. It’s not related to the previous shoulder injury he suffered in 2019. It’s sore, he’s currently receiving treatment and we are hopeful he will be able to bat later.”
IND 193/3 in 36 overs: A slower delivery from Tom sees Dhawan cut this past backward point. Moves to 95 now. Iyer, known to have a weakness against the short ball, gets on top of one to pull it through the front of square.
WICKET! Substitute fielder Livingstone runs in from deep cover to take a brilliant catch as Iyer departs while trying to go for the big shot. KL Rahul is the new man in.
Lucky escape for Rahul! He pokes at one but it flies just past the wicketkeeper for a boundary. Sam can't believe it...
IND 178/2 in 33 overs: With (50 to 100) conversion rates of 42% and 36% in ODIs, Kohli and Dhawan sit at the top of the leaderboard. Will we witness them both score tons today?
STOP THE PRESSES... Kohli has just become the second Indian after Tendulkar to score 10,000 international runs at home!
Meanwhile, Dhawan has drilled another boundary through cover to reach the 100-run stand. Ominous signs these, for England as we head into another drinks break.
And gone for 56! It's the big fish. Kohli holes out to Moeen in the deep. The stage is set beautifully for Shreyas Iyer to come and take over.
Sam Billings has picked up an injury near the boundary ropes now. This doesn't look good. Liam Livingstone replaces him on the field as Billings receives medical attention.
IND 159/1 in 30 overs: Dhawan's been dropped again! On 59 now by Moeen Ali. This has to be a blip. Rashid's aghast. The England all-rounder covers five-six yards quickly to get both his hands to it but just couldn't hold on.
And Stokes now! What is happening to the good-on-the-field England? Stokes lets one slip past him to the boundary as Kohli reaches 48. Very, very sloppy from England.
Dhawan is in a league of his own. Six followed by a four. He is making Ali pay for his mistakes. 150 for India.
Also, a-run-a-ball fifty for Kohli... Top innings, skip! The fielder, at midwicket, meanwhile, could watch the ball just zoom past him as Dhawan gets another boundary. He is on fire, isn't he?
IND 130/1 in 27 overs: Kohli brings up the fifty-run partnership with Dhawan in 59 balls with a boundary off the last ball of the 25th over.
KABOOM! Kohli is in a hurry. A touch short, this, from Rashid in the next over and the ball disappears into the midwicket fence in no time.
IND 109/1 in 24 overs: England has been sharp in the field today, saving the odd extra run whenever the smallest of opportunities have presented. Meanwhile, Kohli has hit Stokes' first ball for a boundary again - pulled through midwicket on this occasion.
Rashid bowls just the delivery Dhawan was waiting for. This was pitched right into his arc and Dhawan unleashes the slog sweep to reach his 31st fifty and bring up the first six of the Indian innings. Kohli goes next, launching a crisp drive straight down the ground.
IND 89/1 in 21 overs: Kohli welcomes Stokes with a delightful boundary. Creams the drive through cover after the last two overs went for only six runs. Dhawan, in the meantime, inches closer to his half-century with a single off the last ball to retain strike. He is batting on 44.
IND 77/1 in 18 overs: England has its first wicket! Bowled short and wide... Rohit goes fishing and gets an edge. Buttler won't drop these for anything. Virat Kohli comes to the crease. Dhawan has flicked the last ball down square leg to pick up a boundary.
Tom to continue. Shreyas Iyer can be seen limbering up near the boundary line, ready to walk in next.
Spin has been introduced as Adil Rashid replaces Stokes. There's a tad bit of turn on offer. Interesting. Bowls a googly to finish the over. Only two runs off it.
IND 64/0 in 15 overs: It's yet another fifty-run stand for Rohit and Dhawan!
Ben Stokes to bowl his first. He peppers one short and Dhawan shuffles across to hook it fine. A much-needed boundary, this, for India.
It'll be Tom to resume things post the drinks break. And Rohit breaks the shackles! He advances down the track to play his favourite pull-shot over midwicket.
IND 49/0 in 12 overs: The first PowerPlay comes to an end with Rohit and Dhawan resorting to playing risk-free shots to keep the scoreboard ticking. A maximum of four players are now allowed outside the 30-yard circle.
Change in bowling. Tom Curran is into the attack and he begins with an impressive delivery shaping away from Dhawan.
Sam, in the meantime, is mixing it up well to restrict Rohit and Dhawan to the singles.
IND 34/0 in 9 overs: Exquisite timing from Dhawan! Wood bangs it short and wide and the batsman rocks back and punches this through deep backward point. He follows it up with another glorious drive through cover.
An uneasy Rohit is getting some medical attention again. Oops... Roy, at gully, has dropped Dhawan on 16. This was a difficult opportunity and Roy, a right-hander, had to dive to his left. There is a missed run-out opportunity at the non-striker's end as well. It is all happening out here in Pune!
Rohit, surprised by a fiery yorker from Wood, gets an edge that falls just short of Ben Stokes at slip. The ball however hits Stokes' shin. He lets out an agonising cry but manages to get up and resume duties. Rohit ends the over on a high with two consecutive boundaries.
IND 15/0 in 6 overs: India would be expecting Rohit and Dhawan to string together a solid partnership here. The duo, opening since the 2013 Champions Trophy, have a brilliant understanding of each other with 16 century stands to show for.
Ouch! Rohit has just received a nasty blow on his right elbow off a 148 kmph delivery from Wood. There's a visible cut and the physio has rushed in. Rohit is visibly in some pain but will carry on. Two back-to-back maiden overs from Wood and Curran.
A cheeky half-a-lap-sweep sees Rohit pick up a boundary off the last ball of the sixth over.
IND 10/0 in 3 overs: Rohit gets off the mark with a quick single in the first over. Dhawan lets out a wry smile as Wood gets one to angle away from the left-hander.
Sam Curran to bowl from the other end and straightaway there is an appeal for LBW off the very first delivery. However, that was looking to have pitched outside leg. A tad extra bounce on it as well. Rohit survives.
Wood returns to cause more problems for Dhawan. With one flying wide, the next ball almost slices him into half. But Dhawan wouldn't mind picking four off the next ball. Bowled short and Dhawan uses his wrists to send it racing away towards the fence. Oh, and seems like the ball has a hole in it now... It has to be changed.
Alright... It will be Rohit Sharma facing Mark Wood first up with Shikhar Dhawan at the non-striker's end. LET'S PLAY!
01:26pm IST: The teams line up for their respective national anthems.

WHAT THEY SAID
Virat Kohli : We had different plans so very happy to bat first. It's a great opportunity for us to put runs on the board. The last game we played here against England is a great memory. If we believe we are a top side we should be ready to do anything. We want to set the intensity from the first match onwards. KL will bat at 5 and keep. Top four are Rohit, Shikhar, myself and Shreyas. Hardik bats at 6, Krunal at 7. Shardul 8, Bhuvi at 9, Prasidh and Kuldeep complete.
Eoin Morgan : Looks like a good wicket. A bit more grass than we expected. It's a good challenge we are looking forward to. Sam Billings, Tom Curran and Moeen Ali are back.
TOSS: England won the toss and elected to field.
Pitch report: "A very good pitch for batting. Looks a beauty and there's an even covering of grass. It can sometimes help the seamers a bit but it's a good surface to bat. The surface sounds firm. The carry will be good for the pacers. It has been raining a bit for the last couple of days here. 280 would be par," according to the experts Ajit Agarkar and Deep Dasgupta.
JUST IN | Prasidh Krishna and Krunal Pandya have been handed ODI debuts.
PREVIEW
At a time when the cricket calendar around the globe is striving to make every international series relevant, you may wonder whether an ODI series — sandwiched between a T20I series and the Indian Premier League — that too with the World Test Championship final and the T20 World Cup to follow, would attract fans.
While the fans in the education and IT hub will be deprived of enjoying the game from the stands as the matches will be held behind closed doors to curb the rising cases of Covid-19 in this part of Maharashtra.
But India and England will have plenty of reasons to try and outperform each other in the three-match series starting on Tuesday at the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) Stadium.

After beating the No.1 T20I side in the shortest format, Virat Kohli’s side will hope to repeat the feat against the World Cup champion.
With Pune experiencing unseasonal showers over the last couple of days, it will certainly impact the conditions. But it’s the cloud of T20 World Cup that’s hovering over the team managements with both captains hinting that the series will present an opportunity to test newer players with an eye on the big-ticket event in October.
India will be hoping to accommodate Suryakumar Yadav and Rishabh Pant in its starting line-up. While Suryakumar made the most of his prolonged wait for a maiden India cap with impressive outings in the T20I series, Pant has been instrumental with the bat and behind the wickets since the tour of Australia.

Kohli confirmed that Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan will continue to open the batting with him and Shreyas Iyer forming the core of the middle-order. If Suryakumar and Pant is included in the XI, it could be at the expense of K.L. Rahul.
Rahul had an impressive outing as a wicketkeeper-batsman in 2020 but having lost his touch in the T20I series, he is far from being a certainty in the starting line-up.
It will be interesting to see if M. Prasidh Krishna, who Kohli has been eyeing for the T20 World Cup, earns a debut.
England, meanwhile, will be hoping to not miss Jofra Archer’s reliable pace. An elbow injury has ruled Archer out of the series, so Mark Wood will have to be at his best. Even Joe Root has been rested.
Lancashire all-rounder Liam Livingstone is likely to earn his debut cap.
LAST FIVE ODIS
India: WLLLL
England: LWLLW
