Hello and welcome to HIGHLIGHTS from Sportstar’s coverage of England vs Germany UEFA Nations League Group A3 match from Wembley Stadium, London.

This was the last major test for the teams before the Qatar World Cup and a chance to work out the last few details.

Some positive to take from this game for England. It scored its first goal from open play in the Nations League this season. It was on course to win but a late goal by Havertz denied it the chance to win its first game this season.

Germany would be disappointed that is gave away a two goal lead but satisfied with the overall creative display on the night.

Italy managed to beat Hungary 2-0 in the other Group A3 match and with it, advance to the semifinals of the tournament. The three teams through to the last-four stage are Italy, Croatia and Netherlands.

MATCH REPORT - Nations League: England comes back from 2-0 deficit against Germany before Havertz ensures 3-3 draw

What a thrilling contest! Six goals in the second half. Things looked settled for the night with Germany 2-0 ahead in the 72nd minute. A mistimed Luke Shaw effort got England off the mark. Mason Mount and Harry Kane scored in the next nine minutes as England looked set to complete a comeback to be remembered for the ages. Havertz had other plans. Nick Pope helped too. In the 87th minute, Serge Gnabry’s shot was blocked by Pope but he failed to collect it cleanly. Havertz landed at the right place at the right time and struck the ball home. This was the last goal of the game and the match ended all square.

Saka plays another ball in the path of Henderson but the ball lands up to Mount in the box via deflection. The midfielder is offside and the attack comes to nothing. That is the last meaningful play of the match.

Saka has a chance to score when he breaks into a long run in the German half which lands him one on one with ter Stegen. He goes on his stronger left foot but the German keeper manages the faintest of finger tip to the shot to send the ball wide of the right post.

That’s a gift for Germany! Nick Pope saves a long-range effort by Gnabry but ends up spilling it. Havertz is rewarded for making the effort to collect any scraps. The ball lands right in front of him and he taps the ball into the back of the net.

ter Stegen tries his best to unsettle England’s penalty taker with his constant movement on the goal line. But Kane is unfazed. The German custodian takes the right direction but Kane’s shot is bang on the top left corner and ter Stegen has no chance to save that. THE COMEBACK IS COMPLETE!

England wins a penalty! Kane comes close to a goal but misses. The play however, is stopped for tackle by Schlotterbeck on Bellingham few minutes back. The VAR check is completed and England gets a chance to complete a comeback.

England have the upper hand now. They patiently build an attack. Reece James almost manages to find to Kane at the back post but a German defender intrudes.

A cross is played in from the right and nobody is able to head the ball. It lands with Luke Shaw who first collects it on his chest and then takes the shot. It is poorly connected but finds its way past the goal line. Sule slides in and attempts a clearance but fails to do it in time.

Just wide! Sule forays on an adventure and plays a neat one-two with Leroy Sane. He gets the ball roughly 25 metres from goal and hits a shot. The ball crawls just wide off the left post.

England wins a corner. The clearance lands in the path of Sterling on the edge of penalty area but the England forward slips the moment he attempts the shot and the ball goes wide.

Gundogan looks calm as ever and slots the ball to the right corner. The ball kisses the side net as it crosses the goal line. No chance for Pope.

Germany wins a penalty! Maguire with the error. He first gives away the ball to Musiala. The German forward has the ball in the penalty area and he skips past the England defender. Maguire puts out a leg in a bid to stop him and catches his shin and trips him. Referee is asked to check his original decision to refuse a penalty by the VAR and he points to the spot.

Sterling goes for a long-range curling effort but ter Stegen dives to his left side and collects the ball with any real trouble.

The first half has been evenly contested for the most part, but England has enjoyed the better chances. Sterling took shots on both occasions and was denied by Germany’s keeper ter Stegen. Germany has kept the ball and looked to create chances but the end product has been missing. Nicely set for the second half.

ter Stegen denies again! Kane is with the ball, this time on the left flank. He spots the run by Sterling past Sule and send the ball on his path. Sterling collects the ball but the angle allows a shot with only his left foot. The shot is weak and bang int he centre which allows ter Stegen to get both hands behind the ball to make the save.

Hoffmann gets the ball on the edge of the England box on the right side. He crosses but only to see Kyle Walker chest it and give it to Pope.

England wins a corner after an attack is thwarted after a deflection by Kehrer on Shaw’s cross. The result, however, is the same as Maguire’s header off the corner kick sails over the cross bar.

Kehrer is making a run in the box but Sterling pulls his shirt in an attempt to stop him. Kehrer tries to be too clever and falls foward. The referee is not falling for that and asks the play to continue.

Another chance for England. The corner is cleared by Germany but the ball lands at Kane’s feet who tries a volley. The shot is blocked and the striker attempts another shot from the rebound which he connects and sends just wide of the far post.

England has come alive. Foden gets a pass from the right side. He quickly turns and plays a cheeky through ball to Sterling on the right side. Sterling drills in a low cross but the attempt is sent away for a corner.

Finally a chance for England! Saved by ter Stegen! Sterling gets a ball on the run. He runs through two German defender, cuts the ball back on his left foot and connects. The shot remains low and ter Stegen gets his left hand to send the ball away.

Another chance for Germany! England loses possession and Germany gets the chance to set on a counter. Hoffmann takes the ball down the right flank and crosses. Raum makes a run and meets the ball in the German penalty area and sends the ball across. The pass passes from inches away of Gundogan and the ball is cleared.

High press from Germany is landing England in trouble. John Stones nearly gifts the ball away to a German attacker while attempting a back pass. Lucky escape.

Bellingham skips past Gundogan in an attempt to break into an attack but the latter fouls him and England wins a free kick.

Germany wins a free kick in a dangerous range. Sane’s attempt, however, goes straight into the wall set up, and Reece James runs with the ball and moves it out of danger.

A corner for Germany! Kimmich drives the ball into the penalty area, and the cross in met at the edge of the six-yard box. The return across the face of goal lacks power and England is able to clear out any danger.

Sterling, Rice and Shaw are trying to work their way into the German penalty area off a throw in but Rice is offside while collecting pass from Sterling and the attack ends.

CHANCE! Nick Pope takes too long to channel out a pass and Havertz pressures him. The ball lands at Hofmann on the right who passes to Gundogan on the edge of the England penalty area. Gundogan tries to curl one in the right corner but ends up hitting it over the post.

A dangerous looking attack by England! Foden drives with the ball from the centre of the field and passes to Kane on the right who has opened up in a run. Kane’s cross, however, is too strong and ends up going out of play.

Jamal Musiala gets the ball at the centre line and has space to charge forward. He fails to sort his feet eventually and meets Declan Rice on way. Germany still manages to keep the ball though but squanders possession.

The early minutes have seen England win a throw in in the final third after Harry Kane tried a cross from the right flank. Germany, however, has seen more of the ball with Kimmich controlling the tempo in midfield.

Kick off

Germany takes the centre kick and we’re underway at Wembley. Germany wins the first free kick of the game after Harry Kane fouls Schlotterbeck fighting for a long ball.

This is England’s first home game since the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. There is minute’s silence offered before kick off at Wembley.

Time for national anthems. Germany first up, followed by England’s God Save the King.

The players are lining up in the tunnel. Just moments away from kick off.

Fighting poor form - England and San Marino are the only teams who have failed to score a goal from open play in the Nations League this season.

A reminder - Germany and England are out of semifinal contention. The other game in the group, Hungary vs Italy, is a potential quarterfinal with the winner advancing to the last four.

A milestone for Harry Kane

Harry Kane becomes the fifth player to captain England’s men’s team in 50 games. The ones before him were Bobby Moore (90), Billy Wright (90), Bryan Robson (64) and David Beckham (59).

PREVIEW

England faced the humiliation of relegation with its 0-1 defeat to Italy last week. Languishing in the last spot, Southgate’s side managed just two points from five games. The goal difference is also a dismal -5.

England has scored just one goal in its Nations League campaign which in its previous match against Germany - a 1-1 draw. When it faces Germany for the second time, it would attempt to salvage some pride.

Germany, too, is out of contention for a place in the last four. It has six points in five games and is third in the table. Germany comes to the contest on the back of a 0-1 defeat to Hungary which put it out of the last four race.

Germany’s manager Hansi Flick, however, insists that he has confidence in his side and said wants his team to enjoy the match versus England.

“It is important to win because that gives the team confidence and a positive feeling. I have full confidence in the team,” said Flick ahead of the match.
