United States’ Tim Weah has taken the contest to a higher level with his scoring skills. Weah’s goals carry the stamp of a seasoned striker; his pace, ball control, receiving and anticipation putting him in an enviable league of youngsters to watch out for in the near future.
“I didn’t change anything, just listened to the coach,” said Weah after his hat-trick performance against Paraguay . “He gave me specific instructions and I took that into my game. Whenever I am out there I am striving and trying to give it my all.”
Weah’s scoring prowess presented a fascinating sight, especially the second goal. He moved to his right from the left flank, took position at the top of the box and let go a scorching drive in to the top right corner of the goal. He attributed it to his instincts.
“I cut onto my right and then my striker instincts took over so I shot with my right foot. I don’t really score so many beautiful goals so I am really happy to get one.”
‘Amazing’
Weah acknowledged the support from the spectators at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. “Coming out of the tunnel, before the match, I said to the players this is almost like we are back in the USA. The people here are amazing and the kids are shouting our names. Your crowd support gave us a tremendous boost. We love India!”
Asked if he had got in touch with his family to share the joy of his hat-trick and United States’ big win, Weah said, “There isn’t a lot of connectivity in Liberia so I couldn’t text my father. I texted my mom. She told me to get down on my knees and thank God for scoring a hat-trick and focus on my next game.”
Son of former FIFA Player of the Year and Ballon D’Or winner, George Weah, the gifted youngster has earned the attention of the football world with his skills. The expectations are bound to rise every time he takes the field. Football is all about scoring goals and Weah possesses that art in plenty.
