Liverpool duo Virgil Van Dijk and Cody Gakpo were both named in the provisional squad of The Netherlands for the upcoming European Championships in Germany, on Thursday.
Coach Ronald Koeman guided it to second in its qualifying group behind France. The former Barcelona coach inherited a talented squad from Louis van Gaal after its run to the 2022 World Cup quarterfinals, and will be confident of making an impact in Germany this summer.
Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen is currently holding the Netherlands’ No.1 jersey. Apart from Van Dijk, Inter’s Denzel Dumfries and Daley Blind, who is enjoying a late career surge at La Liga upstarts Girona are also an integral part of the Oranje’s squad. Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong and Tottenham’s Micky van de Ven also staking strong claims with their impressive club forms.
However, Arsenal Jurrian Timber is not included in the list after he missed the entire season with an ACL injury.
Injured Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong, who has missed the last part of the season has been named by Koeman in the provisional squad. Interestingly, Georginio Wijnaldum has also made the cut, despite the fact he now plies his trade in Saudi Pro League. Inter Milan’s Davy Klaassen has not been included.
Gakpo will likely sit just behind Weghorst alongside Paris Saint-Germain starlet Xavi Simons, who has enjoyed a superb individual campaign on loan at RB Leipzig.
Memphis Depay is also still in the frame despite a mixed year with Atletico Madrid, and Steven Bergwijn also makes the squad despite struggling for Ajax this year.
