Pews at the basilica on the Saint Vincent College campus in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, were crowded on Tuesday with a who's who of golf royalty, as the sport's tightknit community bid farewell to its 'King' Arnold Palmer.

Palmer, who passed away at the age of 87 on September 25, won seven major titles during a distinguished career and is credited with helping to grow the game during the evolution of the television era.

The hometown memorial service for the man known affectionately as "the King" included laughs, memories, prayers, tears and testimonials, including from on-course rival and long-time friend Jack Nicklaus — his fellow World Golf Hall of Famer.

Several members of the United States' winning Ryder Cup team were also in attendance, including Rickie Fowler and Phil Mickelson.

Nicklaus described himself as "proud soldier of Arnie's Army" and added "remember when Arnold Palmer touched your life and please don't forget why".

PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem stated that Palmer leaves a legacy that will stand the test of time.

"I got the instructions which were to make this an uplifting celebration but I can tell you it's really, really hard to do that because we come here with heavy hearts," Finchem said.

"When we talk about Arnold's legacy I don't believe it's a legacy of the past. It's a living legacy that he has left us."

CBS golf announcer Jim Nantz added that "Arnold Palmer will live forever because he's right here," patting his heart.
