Paris Paralympics 2024 HIGHLIGHTS Day 5: Sumit Antil wins India’s third gold with paralympic record; Sheetal-Rakesh duo bags bronze

Nithya Sre leads the first game 21-14 against Rina Marlina of Indonesia in the women’s SH6 bronze medal match. 

Technical issue after one of the medal ceremonies put the women’s SH6 bronze and gold medal matches on hold. The match was supposed to start at 11:50 PM IST, but a one hour delay ensued.

Nithya Sre will be in action against Rina Marlina of Indonesia in the women’s SH6 bronze medal match.

Kanchan throws 10.06 in the final attempt, but fails to secure a podium.

Kodithuwakku breaks the World Record in F44 category with a throw of 67.03m which takes him to second position.

Sumit’s fifth-round throw is 69.04m and he comfortably stays on top.

Sumit goes past the 65m mark but he is not happy with his attempt and intentionally, commits a foul.

Sumit Antil - 66.66m, his worst attempt so far and it is still better than the guy in silver medal position by almost 2m.

Sandeep’s third-round attempt is 62.80m, his best so far but he stays fourth behind Kodithuwakku (63.61m).

Indian para archers Sheetal Devi and Rakesh Kumar defeated Italy’s Eleonora Sarti and Matteo Bonacina 156-155 in the bronze medal match. This will be India’s second para archery medal after Harvinder Singh won bronze in Tokyo.

Paris 2024 Paralympics: Sheetal-Rakesh duo misses mixed team compound open bronze medal

Indian para archers Sheetal Devi and Rakesh Kumar defeated Italy’s Eleonora Sarti and Matteo Bonacina 156-155 in the bronze medal match at the Paris Paralympics 2024 on Monday.

Sukant Kadam loses 17-21, 18-21 to Indonesia’s Fredy Setiawan in the men’s SL4 bronze medal match.

Just like the final in Tokyo three years, Lucas Mazur beats Suhas Yathiraj to win the gold medal in men’s singles SL4 category but this must taste sweeter as he does it in front of the home crowd and that too, in emphatic fashion.

Suhas goes down 9-21, 13-21.

Both teams have perfect scores but due to Fatemeh’s 10, which was 1.1mm away from the bullseye compared to India’s which was 19.3mm away, Iran is through to the final. 

Rakesh begins with a 10 in the final end while Sheetal hits another 9. For Iran, Fatemeh shoots a 10 and Nori hits a 9 which will be checked as it is close to the 10 mark.

Rakesh shoots another 10. Sheetal too hits a 10 now. 

10 for Fatemeh. Nori hits a 9. For now, India leads 152-151 but Nori’s first arrow in the final End will be checked.

And Nori’s first 9 has been upgraded to a 10, which means the winner will be decided via shoot-off.

Sheetal and Rakesh lead Islamic Republic of Iran’s Fatemeh Hemmati and Hadi Nori 39-38 after 1st End.

Iran scores 37 in 2nd End. For India, the score is also 37 as Sheetal hits an 8. Overall, India still leads: 76-75.

Third End and this time, the Iranians have the upper hand: 38-37.

In the third mixed team compound open quarterfinals, Italy beats China in a shoot-off by a whisker!

The two pairs were tied at 151-151 after four ends. In the shoot-off, China’s Zhou Jiamin shot a 10 while Ai Xinliang hit a 9. For Italy, Eleonara Sarti had a 10 while Matteo Bonacina hit a 9. Since, the totals in the shoot-off were also equal, the winner had to be decided based on the proximity of their respective 10s to the center. Italy’s 10 was 1.1mm closer than China’s Absolute scenes at Invalides as the Italian’s celebrated while the Chinese pair looked stunned.

Sheetal Devi and Rakesh Kumar, the top seeds in mixed team compound open event, are through to the semifinals with a 154-143 win over Indonesia’s Teodora Audi Ayudia Ferelly and Ken Swagumilang.

Their semifinal will take place at 9:40PM IST where they will face Islamic Republic of Iran’s Fatemeh Hemmati and Hadi Nori.

Sheetal Devi and Rakesh Kumar lead Indonesia’s Teodora Audi Ayudia Ferelly and Ken Swagumilang 76-68 after two ends in the mixed team compound open archery quarterfinals.

The Indian duo leads 114-105 after third end. Barring any disaster, it is set to reach the semifinals and have two shots at a medal.

Thulasimathi Murugesan goes down 17-21, 10-21 to China’s Yang Qiu Xia, the defending champion, in women’s singles SU5 final. 

Nevertheless, it is a double-podium for India as Manisha Ramadass has clinched bronze.

Overall, third medal in para badminton for India today.

Manisha Ramadass wins India’s second medal in para badminton at Paris Paralympics. She beats Denmark’s Cathrine Rosengren 21-12, 21-8 to clinch the bronze medal in women’s singles SU5 category.

Thulasimathi trails Yang 5-11 in second game.

Defending champion Yang Qiu Xia of China comes from behind to win the opening game 21-17 against India’s Thulasimathi Murugesan in women’s singles SU5 para badminton final.

Thulasimathi Murugesan is up against China’s Yang Qiu Xia in women’s singles SU5 final. The Indian has an 11-8 lead in the opening game.

Yang makes a brilliant comeback to move ahead and take a 17-15 lead. Pressure on the Indian.

Thulasimathi closes the gap to 17-18 before netting a smash.

Paralympics 2024: Nitesh Kumar wins gold in para badminton men’s singles SL3

Nitesh Kumar won gold for India in the para-badminton men’s singles SL3 event of the Paris 2024 Paralympics held at the La Chapelle Arena in Paris on Monday.

At the end of the second series, Nihal falls to seventh after shooting 92 while Amir Ahmad Bhat scores 95, but drops down to ninth. 

At the end of the first series in Rapid stage of the Men’s 25m pistol SH1, Nihal scores a 97 while Amir Ahmad Bhat scores 94. Nihal remains fourth while Amir rises upto seventh. 

Daniel Bethell forces a deciding game in the men’s singles SL3 final against Nitesh Kumar. He takes Game 2 21-18 with a hat-trick of points. 

Nitesh wins the first game 21-14 against Daniel Bethell. A flurry of points for the Indian after trailing 11-13 earlier. 

Neck and neck between the two, midway through the first game. Daniel leads Nitesh 13-11. 

A tight first game ensuing between Nitesh and Daniel in the gold medal match. In the SL6 category, both athletes will play a vertical half-court meaning the rallies tend to be longer than usual. Daniel leads Nitesh 5-4. 

Nitesh Kumar will be in action in the para-badminton Men’s Singles SL3 Gold Medal Match against Great Britain’s Daniel Bethell. The match will start at 3:30pm IST. 

Greek athlete Konstantinos Tzounis can only manage a best throw of 41.32 meaning Yogesh Kathuniya seals the silver.

Paralympics 2024: Yogesh Kathuniya wins silver in men’s Discus throw F56

Yogesh Kathuniya bagged the silver medal in the Para-athletics men’s discus F56 final of the Paris 2024 Paralympics held at the Stade de France on Monday.

A 40.33 throw for Yogesh in his fourth attempt. Remains in second place with a best throw of 42.22. 

Two more sub-41 throws for Yogesh. A 40.89 followed by a 39.68. The best he can get is a silver from this position. One competitor left in the reckoning. 

Yogesh Kathuniya throws 42.22m in his first attempt to move up to second in the Men’s Discus F56 final.

41.50 and 41.55 in his next two throws. He has three remaining to try and displace Batista. 

Sivarajan/ Nitya Sre lose their Mixed Doubles SH6 Bronze medal match to Subhan/ Marlina from Indonesia 17-21, 12-21

Paris 2024 Paralympics: Sivarajan/Nithya Sre duo loses Mixed Doubles SH6 bronze medal match

The Indian shuttler pair of Sivarajan Solaimalai/Nithya Sre Sumathy lost in the Mixed Doubles SH6 bronze medal match to Indonesia’s Subhan/Rina Marlina 0-2 (17-21, 12-21) at the La Chapelle Arena Court 3 on Monday.

Claudiney Batista dos Santos breaks his own Paralympic record in the F56 with a 46.86m throw. He rises to the top of the standings. 

2nd seeds Sivarajan Solaimalai and Nitya Sre lose the first game to Subhan/Marlina 17-21 in the Mixed Doubles SH6 Bronze medal match. 

Yogesh Kathuniya will throw third among five competitors in the Men’s Discus F56 final. Dusan Laczo completes his set of throws first. He has a best throw of 41.20. 

Sivarajan Solaimalai and Nitya Sre Sumathy Sivan take on Subhan and Rina Marlina in the Mixed Doubles SH6 bronze medal match. The first game is now underway with the Indian pair trailing 8-12. 

At the end of the Precision stage comprising 30 shots, Nihal Singh aggregates 287 points with 5 inner tens to occupy fourth place.

Amir Ahmad Bhat rises to eighth spot with 286 points and four inner tens. 

Strong start to Series 3 for Nihal with four tens. He moves up to sixth with a score of 239.

Amir manages four tens too and rises to 10 with a score of 238. 

A flurry of nines to end Series 2 for Amir. He ends the series with a total score of 189 and drops to 12th spot.

Nihal scores two tens and three nines to end with 190 after Series 2. He drops below the qualification spots into ninth.

Three tens to start the next set of shots from Amir. He rounds out the series with a ten and takes the score to 143 and moves upto ninth. 

Nihal manages two tens and three nines to also score 143. He is a spot above in eighth. 

Two tens and a nine from Amir after the next set of five shots takes him to 13th place with 94 points. 

Nihal scores three tens and two nines to take his points tally to 96. He falls to seventh. 

At the end of five shots in the precision stage, Nihal is sixth with 48 while Amir is 16th with 47.

A good start for Nihal who gets proceedings underway in the precision stage with a 10 followed by a 9. 

Amir starts with a couple of nines. 

Nihal Singh and Amir Amir Ahmad Bhat from India will be in action soon. The event consists of two stages, Rapid and Precision. Each competitor will take 30 shots in each stage. 

Top 8 from the event will qualify for the final of the event.
