UP Warriorz announces new jersey ahead of WPL 2024

Women’s Premier League franchise UP Warriorz announced the launch of its new cricket jersey, inspired by the state’s emblematic Palash flower.

“The new jersey marks the celebration of the pioneering spirit of the women of Uttar Pradesh. It draws from the well of inspiration left by female icons and groups such as Rani Laxmi Bai, Sucheta Kriplani, Arundhati Bhattacharya, and the formidable Gulabi Gang.” stated the team.

Designed with vibrant hues and elements that showcase the tenacity and robust spirit of the parish, the jersey embodies the ability to thrive amidst adversity.

Season 2 of the WPL will kick off on 23rd February, and go on for close to four weeks, The matches will be played in two venues, Bangalore and Delhi.

Nagpur to Host Men’s National Super 8 Matches of Nagesh Trophy for the blind from January 29

The Super 8 stage of the ongoing IndusInd Bank Nagesh Trophy will kick off on January 29 with Odisha, Telangana, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka locking horns in the knockout matches of the 6 th edition of the IndusInd Bank Nagesh Trophy- Men’s National T20 Cricket Tournament for the Blind 2023-24.

Cricket Association for the Blind in India, Cricket Association for the Blind in Vidarbha and Samarthanam Trust for the Disabled will organise the Super 8 Matches at Nagpur.

The Super 8 stage will be inaugurated at the MLA Guest House Garden in Nagpur on Sunday a day before the matches begin. This is for the first time that Nagesh Trophy is being played in Nagpur. The matches will be played at SB City College Cricket Ground and Indian Railways Cricket Ground.

The Super 8 stage league matches will be played on the first 3 days and the semi-finals will be played on February 1. The finals of the megaevent will take place on February 2 in Nagpur. Odisha, Telangana, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka are the eight teams who will compete in the Super 8 stage.

The Nagesh Trophy was launched in the memory of Late Shri SP Nagesh, Founder President, Cricket Association for the Blind in India and Founder Trustee, Samarthanam Trust for the Disabled. The launch of the tournament brought together the entire blind cricket community into one huge platform, by creating a milestone in the blind cricket history.

Tamil Nadu record team double in KIYG squash

Tamil Nadu recorded a historic double, winning both the boys’ and girls’ team crowns in the Khelo India Youth Games squash competition at the Indian Squash & Triathlon Academy here on Wednesday.

Squash made its debut in the ongoing sixth edition of the national-level KIYG, and the hosts added the team honours in spectacular fashion to the five individual medals – one gold & four bronze.

Top seeded TN boys, comprising Arihant KS, Sandhesh PR, Meyyappan L and Shiven Agarwal, beat Uttar Pradesh 2-0 in the final, with Sandhesh edging out Ansh Tripathi 11-8, 11-7, 5-11, 9-11, 11-5 and Arihant putting it past Aryan Pratap Singh 11-4, 9-11, 10-12, 11-9, 12-10 to avenge his loss in the individual competition.

The TN girls, also the top seeds and consisting of individual champion Pooja Arthi R, Shameena Riaz, Deepika V and Ananya Narayan, brushed side Maharashtra 2-0, with Shameena defeating Anika Dubey 11-8, 11-3, 7-11, 11-9 and Pooja beating Nirupama Dubey 10-12, 11-7, 5-11, 11-5, 11-8.

Boys: TN bt UP 2-0 (Sandhesh PR bt Ansh Tripathi 11-8, 11-7, 5-11, 9-11, 11-5; Arihant KS bt Aryan Pratap Singh 11-4, 9-11, 10-12, 11-9, 12-10).

Final placings: 1 TN, 2 UP, 3 Rajasthan & Assam.

Girls: TN bt Maharashtra 2-0 (Shameena Riaz bt Anika Dubey 11-8, 11-3, 7-11, 11-9; Pooja Arthi R bt Nirupama Dubey 10-12, 11-7, 5-11, 11-5, 11-8).

Beignton Cup: ONGC breezes past Uttar Pradesh XI

A brace apiece by Diwakar Ram and Rajinder Singh guided Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) to a comprehensive 5-2 win over Uttar Pradesh XI in the Coal India 125th Beighton Cup hockey tournament at the SAI astro-turf ground here on Wednesday.

CYCLING

Third edition of HCL Cyclothon to be held on March 17

The third edition of the HCL Cyclothon to be staged on March 17, will offer a total prize of Rs.31 lakh.

Apart from the main event of 55 kilometre race for the Cycling Federation of India (CFI) certified professionals, in the 19-35 years age group, there will be events for amateurs. There will also be a non-competitive ride of 10 kilometres for anyone above 16 years of age to encourage cycling as an activity to stay fit.

The amateurs in the 18-35 years will have a 55 kilometre race, while those over 35 years will have the 27-kilometre race. There will also be a Mountain Bike race of 27 kilometres.

Registration for the events can be done on the hclcyclothon website till March 7.

To enhance the overall experience, a new route with a 13.5 kilometre loop as against the earlier 7.5 km route, has been designed from the Noida-Greater Noida Link road.

The Commissioner of Gautam Budh Nagar, Laxmi Singh, commended HCL’s drive to hold the event in Noida and expressed confidence that it would become a regular feature.

“I am very happy that HCL has been promoting sports all over the country and grateful that they brought the cyclothon to Gautam Budh Nagar. I aim to bring a team of police officials to participate in the cyclothon”, said Laxmi Singh.

The secretary general of the Asian Cycling Federation, Onkar Singh said that it was inspiring to witness the growth of cycling as a competitive sport in the country.

“We had excellent response from cycling enthusiasts in Noida and Chennai last year. This year, it will be more inclusive, competitive and appealing for the participants”, said Sundar Mahalingam, President of Strategy at HCL.

KHELO INDIA YOUTH GAMES

Two new meet records were created in the 1500m athletics event in both the boys’ and girls’ categories of the 6th Khelo India Youth Games in Chennai on Wednesday. Durga Singh of Bihar (4:29.22) and Muskan (Rajasthan) (4:33.95), who finished first and second in girls’ 1500m broke the previous record held by Sneha (4:35.45) set in 2020. Only Durga’s record will be considered. In boys’ 1500m, Rahul Sarnaliya of Uttarakhand erased the previous mark of Arjun Waskale (3:51.57, 2022) by running in a time of 3:51.12.

Earlier, the twin sisters from Kanyakumari, M. Ansilin and M. Akslin caught the media attention, finishing first and second in girls’ 800m.

Tamil Nadu boys’ and girls’ teams won the squash titles, defeating Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra 2-0 in the final respectively. Tamil Nadu won a total of 3 gold and four bronze medals in squash.
