Nischal wins silver with new national record at Shooting World Cup in Rio

Nischal shot a national record 592 out of 600 in qualification, to make the final in the second place behind Miao Wanru (594) of China.

Nischal overcame a struggle on the last five shots to win the women’s 50-metre rifle 3-position silver medal in the World Cup in Rio, Brazil.

It was the second medal for India, following the gold by Elavenil Valarivan in women’s air rifle. India finished joint fifth with Germany and France with a gold and silver. Italy was on top with two gold and a bronze. China was second with a gold, four silver and three bronze.

Nischal shot a national record 592 out of 600 in qualification, to make the final in the second place behind Miao Wanru (594) of China.

The 19-year-old Haryana girl was 0.1 point behind the eventual gold medallist Jeanette Duestad of Norway after 41 shots in the final.

However, Nischal slipped to the third spot after an 8.4 on the 43rd shot. Stephanie Grundsoee of Denmark shot 7.9, to let Nischal sail above her. Jeanette was in fine form and clinched the gold with a 3.5-point margin.

In men’s rifle 3-position event, Olympian Chain Singh shot 587 and missed the final by one point. Goldi Gurjar placed 27th with 582.

In men’s 25-metre rapid-fire pistol, Olympian Gurpreet Singh shot 574 for the 17th spot. In the Rio Olympics in 2016, Gurpreet had shot 581 for the seventh place.
