Caroline Wozniacki was left frustrated by a s***** start to the season after blowing a first-set lead to crash out of the Australian Open first round to Yulia Putintseva.

Former world number one Wozniacki, seeded 16th, failed to make it to round two at Melbourne Park for the first time in her career after falling 1-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 to the Kazakh.

There was no sign of the Dane's exit after she raced through the opener in little over half an hour, but Wozniacki was twice unable to take advantage of going up a break of serve in the second set.

And the 25-year-old shouldered the blame for failing to see off the plucky Putintseva.

"I would say it's a pretty s***** start to the season," she said. "It wasn't a pretty first set but I got it done and really should have closed it off in two.

"You know, I let her back into the match, and it was basically my own fault that I'm not here as the winner."

Wozniacki has now fallen a stage earlier every year since reaching the semi-finals in 2011, and she is planning to go back to the drawing board on the practice courts.

"I don't know [how I restart my season], I haven't got that far yet," she added. "I guess I just go back on the practice court and that's really all you can do."
