Hello and welcome to Sportstar’s Highlights of Day 6 of the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. India has won five gold, six silver and seven bronze medals so far.

Men’s Over 75kg-80kg: Quarterfinals: Ashish eliminated in the quarterfinals
At the end of the third round, Bowen wins the bout by split decision and Ashish is out of the event.
After the end of second round, the scores are level with the final round becoming the decider now.
Ashish wins the first round with three 10s. India’s Ashish Kumar is in action against Aaron Bowen in the quarterfinals of the Men’s Light Heavyweight section.

Athletics - Men’s Discus throw F42-44/61-64 Final

Both Indians finish out of medal contention, with Harrison Walsh of Wales winning the Gold Medal, Dan Greaves (England) winning the Silver and Aled Davies of Wales winning the Bronze Medal.

Devendra Gahlot (F42) and Devender Kumar (F44) of India have thrown 42.13 (second attempt) and 46.28 (fifth attempt) respectively, with the latter ranking fourth in the standings currently. Aled Davies of Wales leads the contest so far, with a throw of 51.39m.

Tejaswin Shankar wins the third Bronze Medal for India today, with a jump of 2.22m in the high jump final, taking the total medal tally to 18. It is India’s first medal in athletics in the Commonwealth Games 2022.

Athletics

High Jump

  • Tejaswin fails to clear 2.55 and wins the Bronze Medal for India. What a journey this has been for the Indian. Uncertainty, green signal and then a medal for India at the Birmingham Games.
  • In his fourth attempt, he clears 2.22m in his first attempt as well. He has cleared every bar in his first attempt.
  • Tejaswin also clears 2.15m in his second attempt.
  • The bar is literally raised in the second attempts, with three jumpers Joel Clarke-Khan, Hamish Kerr and Mike Edwards, clearing 2.15m
  • Tejaswin clears 2.10m in his first attempt comfortably.
  • Tejaswin Shankar is in action in the High Jump final now. Follow the event as it happens HERE.

Women’s Shot Put final

  • In her final attempt, she throws 15.59m, but is put of medal contention, finishing at the bottom of the standings at tenth.
  • Manpreet could not improve on her second attempt with a throw of 15.56m and slips to the bottom of the standings at the moment.
  • Manpreet Singh of India has thrown 15.57m in her first attempt and is currently ninth in the standings.
Boxing: Light Middleweight - Lovlina Borgohain loses to Rosie Eccles
Lovlina wins the first round 49-46, but fails to capitalise on the lead and loses the fight to the Welsh fighter.
India’s Lovlina Borgohain is set to be in action against Rosie Eccles of Wales in the quarterfinals of the over 66kg-70kg category.

Swimming - Men’s 1500m Freestyle

India’s Advait Page and Kushagra Rawat finished seventh and eight in the final with timings of 15:32:36 and 15:42:67 respectively.

Para Table Tennis - Men’s Singles Classes 3-5; India’s Raj Aravindan loses 3-1 to Nigeria’s Isau

  • Isau wins the fourth set 11-8 to win the match for Nigeria.
  • Isau wins the first game 11-9, while Raj makes a comeback in the next game. Isau takes the lead eventually in the third game with the score 11-6 in Nigeria’s favour.
  • Raj Aravindan Alagar of India is in action against Nigeria’s Isau Ogunkunle.
Medal Alert
India’s Gurdeep Singh wins the Bronze medal in Men’s 109+ kg weightlifting final, taking India’s medal tally to 17. India has 10 medals in weightlifting now.

Weighlifting - Men’s 109+ kg

  • In his final attempt, Gurdeep lifts 223 kg, but after successful lifts by New Zealand’s David Andrew and Pakistan’s Md. Nooh, the Indian secures a Bronze Medal in the event - India’s second Bronze in weightlifting today.
  • Gurdeep lifts 207 kg successfully, taking his total to 374 kg as he goes top in standings.
  • Gordon Shaw lifts 195 kg in his first attempt, taking his total to 362 kg, the highest in the event so far.
  • The Clean and Jerk round begins with Ushan of Sri Lanka starting it with an attempt to lift 175 kg. He fails the first time, but succeeds in the second attempt.
  • After the Snatch round, Gurdeep sits joint-third with the Englishman after Muhammad Nooh Butt sets a Games record after lifting 173 kg.
  • Gurdeep will try to lift 173 kg in his final attempt.
  • Gurdeep Singh successfully lifts 167 kg in his second attempt in Snatch and sits joint-second with Gordon Shaw of England.
  • The event begins with Ushan of Sri Lanka lifting first, and Nathan Morris of South Africa surpasses him with a lift of 141 kg in Snatch. India’s Gurdeep Singh is expected to lift 160 kg in his first attempt.
Boxing - Women’s Over 48kg-50kg (Light Fly)
Nikhat Zareen beats Helen Jones of Wales to enter the semifinals of Light Flyweight category and secures another medal for India.
In the next round, she secures five 10s and despite a stumble in the third, she win the bout 5-0.
Nikhat finishes the first round with five 10s, winning it against the Welsh boxer.

Lawn Bowls and Para Lawn Bowls

England wins the match 20-11 and finishes the group as the topper. India and England qualify for the quarterfinals.

England is leading India 18-4 after 11 ends in the Men’s Fours at the moment. Irrespective of whether India wins or loses this match, it is through to the quarterfinals, finishing second in Section C.

Judo Gold Medal Match: Tulika Maan loses Sarah Adlington
The Indian gets two warnings, but wins a point with 1 minute 30 seconds left in the contest. In the ends, the Judoka from Scotland seals the match as Tulika wins a Silver Medal.
India’s Tulika Maan will be in action against Sarah Adlington of Scotland in the Women’s 78 kg final.

Saurav Ghoshal of India beat James Willstrop of England 3-0 to win the fifth Bronze Medal for India, taking India’s medal tally to 15 now.
SQUASH - MEN’S SINGLES BRONZE MEDAL MATCH (Saurav Ghoshal vs James Willstrop)
India wins the third game 11-4: India takes the lead and continues to build on the same with the score 41 to India at the moment. The 35-year-old’s agility and skill looks too good against the English 2018 Gold Medal Medallist with the score 9-3 in India’s favour now.
Saurav seals the match with a 3-0 win to earn his first individual medal at the Commonwealth Games.
India wins the second game 11-1: Saurav looks to be running away with the match, with four points in his favour so far. The former World No. 1 has not opened his account yet. Though Willstrop pulls a point back, but Saurav is way ahead at the moment, with an eight-point lead.
Saurav finally wins the second game in a row, with just one more needed for India’s second Bronze Medal of the day.
Second set begins
“My biggest competition will be Paul Coll and Joel Makin, they will both be seeded 1 and 2 given their world ranking, but i’m going to focus on my game and hope that works out,” Ghosal told Sportstar at the Indian Squash Academy in Chennai, in the run up to the games.
The current world ranking favours the Indian with Ghosal being ranked 15 in the world and Willstrop at 24. Nonetheless, at his peak in 2012 Willstrop was number 1 in the world, while the Indians highest ranking has been 10.
Interestingly, James Willstrop’s late father the legendary Malcom Willstrop who has trained some of the best English players was also Saurav’s coach for the longest time.
India wins the first game 11-6: Willstrop starts the game winning the first point, but Ghoshal equalises soon. The Indian continues to play catch-up for the second point as well, but takes the lead eventually. Saurav continues to build on the lead, taking the score to 6-3.
Saurav is looking in a very good form at the moment, with the 35-year-old just two points away from sealing the first set. He wins the set finally to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
Match Begins
While Saurav Ghosal has won a solitary silver medal which came in the 2018 edition of the games, James Willstrop, has six medals at the multi-sporting event, three each in doubles and singles.
Saurav Ghosal is set to play defending CWG champion James Willstrop in the bronze medal match at the Commonwealth Games. The two have faced each other multiple times on the PSA world tour, with the results in Willstrop’s favour 8-1.

Para Table Tennis: India results

  • Bhavina wins the third set 11-6 to win the match 3-0 against Nigeria
  • The Indian has won the first two games 11-3 and 11-7 and is edging closer to a whitewash, with a 9-6 lead in the third set.
  • Bhavina Patel is in action against Nigeria’s Ifechukwude Christiana in the  Women’s Singles Classes 3-5.
  • Sonalben Patel of India won the previous match against Amanda Jane of Australia 3-0 in the Women’s Singles Classes 3-5
  • In the Women’s Singles classes 6-10, Baby Sahana Ravi of India lost to Gloria Gracia of Malaysia.

Women’s Cricket: India vs Barbados

  • India beats Barbados, winning the match by 100 runs and qualifies for the semifinals.
  • The India vs Barbados match is set to begin at 10:30 pm, with the Indian team in action in the decider. Follow the match HERE.

Lawn Bowls: India out of medal contention in Women’s Triples

New Zealand wins the match 18-14 over England and secures a place in the quarterfinals. India is out in Women’s Triples.

The Indian Women’s Triples team, comprising Pinki, Tania Choudhury and Rupa Rani Tirkey has a chance to break into the quarterfinals, but its fate awaits the match between England and New Zealand, If New Zealand wins, India is out, but a win for the host will allow India to enter the Quarters.

Tarrant lifts 139kg successfully in her second go and Purnima is out of medal contention.
Purnima ends with a combined 228kg, with 103kg and 125kg in the snatch and clean and jerk, respectively.
Purnima goes again. For one final time. She seems to be struggling with her back and is barely able to get the weight off the ground.
Purnima doesn’t get her grip right as she drops the weight seconds after getting it off the ground. She fails 133kg in her second attempt.
Manumua clears 128kg in her final attempt and ends with a total of 235kg. She registered legal lifts in all six attempts.
After clearing 125kg, Purnima will attempt 133kg in the second attempt.
Amoe Tarrant lifts 127kg in the first attempt.
Manumua clears 125kg in her second attempt and now sits with a total of 246kg.
Purnima clears 125kg in her first attempt.
Friesen now lifts 123kg in her first go.

Stowers goes for 121kg again and does it this time to end with a best of 121kg.
Campbell continues to impress, clearing 121kg in her second attempt but Stowers fails to match that in her second try.
Stowers of Samoa also lifts 117kg successfuly in her first attempt.
After six lifters complete their three attempts in the snatch, Purnima is placed fourth with 103kg.
Campbell of England starts a mile ahead of the rest with 117kg and clears it in her first go to set a Games Record.
Friesen fails 110kg in her third attempt and settles with a best of 106kg.
Purnima registers a best of 103kg in the snatch.

Boxing Men’s Over 54kg- 57kg (Featherweight) Quarterfinal: Hussamuddin confirms medal with a 3-2 win

Md. Hussamuddin beats Tryagain Morning to reach the men’s featherweight semifinal!
Round 3: Hussamuddin is off the blocks with a slew of blows to Tryagain. Tryagain makes up with a chain of strikes towards the end of the final round.
Round 2: Hussamuddin and Tryagain keep up with each other with some fiery blows. Hussammuddin takes a 2-0 lead with a split decision favour. The bout has certainly been closer than this scoreline.
Round 1: Hussamuddin starts with a flurry of thumping strikes but Tryagain retorts with two telling punches. Hussamuddin wins Round one 3-2 by split decision.

JUDO - Judoka Tulika Maan qualifies for the final in the women’s +78 kg after beating New Zealand’s Sydnee Andrews. She is one win away from a gold medal. Her next opponent is Scotland’s Adlington.

India’s Deepak Deswal wins his Round of 16 bout in the men’s 100kg category by Ippon. However, he fails to beat his opponent in the quarterfinal.

In the repechage round, he lost to Fiji’s Takayawa and bowed out of the competition.

BOXING

India’s Nitu won her quarterfinal in the women’s minimumweight category. She beat Northern Ireland’s Nicole Clyde to secure a berth in the finals and assured India of a bronze.

SQUASH - Sunayna Kuruvilla beats Guyana’s Mary Fung-A-Fat 3-0 (11-7, 13-11, 11-2) in women’s singles plate final in squash.

India’s medal favourites Joshna Chinappa and Harinder Pal Singh Sandhu beat Sri Lanka in the Round of 32.

WEIGHTLIFTING

Here are the LIVE updates from Lovepreet Singh’s men’s 109 kg weightlifting final:

  • Result: India’s Lovepreet Singh wins bronze.
  • The Australian goes for 211 kg, having a shot at the medal but fails. This confirms the medal for India’s Lovepreet.
  • Cameroon’s Junior Periclex tries 205 kg but fails. He still holds the top position.
  • Meanwhile, Australia’s Jackson comes up with a 202 kg lift - the highest in clean & jerk.
  • Opeloge fails in the third attempt. He ends up with 194 kg.
  • Oh No! Opeloge’s second attempt has been adjudged as no lift.
  • Opeloge just continues to move higher. He lands a lift of 200 kg in his second try.
  • Cameroon’s lifter picks up 196 kg on first atempt but goes one better to 201 kg in the second try.
  • As Lovepreet awaits the result, Samoa’s Opeloge manages to lift 194 kg with ease.
  • Lovepreet completes all six lifts. He manages 192 kg to conclude with a total of 355 kg.
  • Australia’s Jackson with 190 kg on the first attempt.
  • The Indian takes back the lead with a second attempt of 189 kg. A good lift by Lovepreet.
  • Griffiths attempts 187 kg and is successful. He is in the lead now.
  • Canada’s Bassette lifts 186 kg. He gets a split decision but that puts him in the lead.
  • India’s Lovepreet Signh succeeds in lifting 185 kg in his first attempt. He stands first at the moment.
  • Pakistan’s Hanzala Butt ends at 173 kg as he fails in his second and third attempts. He ends with a total of 315 kg.
  • England’s Andy Griffiths moves in to first place with a lift of 180 kg.
  • Four weightlifters have completed their attempts with the bets one coming from Pakistan’s Butt at 173 kg.
  • The clean & jerk round is underway.
  • Samoa’s Opeloge, however, leads after the snatch round with a best lift of 164 kg.
  • Lovepreet Singh lifts 161 kg in his second attempt, but his best comes at 163 kg in his third attempt.
  • Cameron’s weightlifter also manages a snatch of 160 kg.
  • England’s Andy Griffiths lifts 159 kg and takes the lead. The lead is then taken by Samoa’s Opeloge with 160 kg.
  • Canada’s Bessette also snatches 157 kg in his second attempt, but he goes one better and ends up at 163 kg.
  • The Indian starts with 157 kg and moves to the first spot.
  • Malaysia’s Shamsuddin with a successful lift of 148 kg.
  • New Zealand’s Tasi Taala fails to complete a snatch attempt and is out of competition.
  • Australia’s Jackson with 145 kg on his opening snatch attempt, but fails on his second and third attempts of 150 kg.

India kicked off proceedings in Lawn Bowls with in the men’s singles and women’s pairs formats.

Men’s Singles - Mridul Borgohain beats Falkland Islands’ Chris Locke in Section D Round 2
Final Score - India 21-5 Falkland Islands.
The Indian will need to win his next matches to have a shot at quarterfinals.
With the win Mridul turns his point difference into positive. However, he remains in third place.
And the contest is over. Mridul manages to find two points to reach the total of 21.
After End 13 - India 19-5 Falkland Islands.
After End 12 - India 19-4 Falkland Islands. The Indian is just two points away from a victory.
After End 11 - India 16-4 Falkland Islands
A big point difference will help Mridul end at a higher place and advance to the knockout stages in case things get close in the sectional phase.
A mini fightback from the opponent as he manages to win two points. After End 10, India leads 15-4.
A point for Locke from Falkland Islands. The score is 15-2. The Indian is just 6 points from victory.
After End 8 - India 15-1 Falkland Islands
Seven ends have been completed and the Indian has taken a significant advantage. Borgohain leads 13-1

Niue are frustrating India. They take another point from End 15. India 18-6 Niue.

Both of India’s matches seem to be moving in tandem. The score in the women’s pair game is 16-4 after End 11, the same as the men’s singles game of Mridul Borgohain.
Another massive End of bowling by the Indians. India now leads 15-4.
Another point for India. After End 9 - India 10-4 Niue.
After End 8 - India 9-4 Niue
India get one point from End 7. Lead 7-4.

India had lost to New Zealand on Tuesday and are placed third in Section B.
