Karnataka vs Mumbai at Nagpur

(Our correspondent Amol Karhadkar from Nagpur adds)

4.30 pm: End of day one. It's been Karnataka's day! Vinay Kumar set up the game for them with his 22nd five-for. And Mayank Agarwal didn't get flustered despite the last-wicket partnership between Dhawal Kulkarni and Shivam Malhotra that surged Mumbai's total to 173. At 115/1 at stumps , with Kaunain Abbas on 12 off 35 and Mayank Agarwal on 62 off 83, Karnataka will be hoping to bat big and knock Mumbai out of the game. For Mumbai, if they can bounce back from such a situation, it will be nothing less than a miracle. See you at 9am tomorrow!

4.15 pm: Karnataka going strong. 107/1 in 25 overs with Mayank Agarwal on 58 and Kaunain Abbas on 9. Karnataka trails Mumbai by just 65 runs now.

3.50 pm: 50 for Mayank Agarwal. He has just taken 56 balls and has hit 7 fours and 1 six. Karnataka 93/1.

3.45 pm: First ball for Shivam Dube and he castles R. Samarth for 40 (57) as Karnataka loses its first wicket for 83 in 18.1 overs. Karnataka just 90 behind now.

3.27 pm: Karnataka is cruising here. The openers Mayank and Samarth have negotiated the first hour without any trouble, cruising to 67 for no loss, just 106 behind Mumbai now.

3.15 pm: Karnataka has upped the ante. 50/0 in 11.4 overs.

3.00 pm: Karnataka has made a decent start. The openers R. Samarth (17) and Mayank Agarwal (11) have added 28 runs in 9 overs.

2:03 pm: Dhawal Kulkarni's third consecutive fifty results in his first dismissal in three weeks as he fails to clear Arvind over the in-field. That brings the 70-run partnership between Kulkarni and Shivam Malhotra to an end and the innings to a close. Mumbai 173 all out and the umpires call tea.

1.45 pm: The last wicket stand for Mumbai has put on a 50-run partnership. Kulkarni (66*) is shepherding Malhotra (7*) along to frustrate Karnataka. Mumbai 159/9

1.25 pm: Dhawal Kulkarni reaches his half-century. The lone bright spot in Mumbai's innings. He has taken 86 balls and has clubbed 6 fours and two sixes. Mumbai 139/9.

1.15 pm: Vinay Kumar's two wickets early on after lunch helped the Karnataka captain become the first pacer to enter top-10 all-time highest wicket-takers in Ranji Trophy. Moreover, it helped Karnataka reduce Mumbai to 103/9. Since then, Dhawal Kulkarni has found an ally in another debutant Shivam Malhotra. The duo has helped Mumbai reach 132/9 at drinks. The 29-run unbeaten association for the last wicket is the highest partnership of the innings, by the way!

12.37 pm: Six wickets for Vinay Kumar! Karsh Kothari is the ninth man to be dismissed. He is caught by C.M. Gautam for 1 run. Mumbai 103/9. And, Vinay has figures of 12.5-2-32-6 now.

12.35 pm: Mumbai huffs and puffs past the 100-run mark. That should be some psychological relief. 103/8 in the 36th over.

This is what Vinay Kumar had said, ahead of this crucial match. And boy, he was spot on!

12.20 pm: Vinay Kumar picks up 5 wickets! The Karnataka captain is leading from the front. Akhil Herwadkar is out for 32, off 75 balls. He is caught by Samarth off Vinay Kumar. Mumbai tottering at 95/8 in 33.1 overs. Vinay has figures of 11.1-2-25-5 now!

11.30 am: A vocal Karnataka outfit heads back after virtually putting Mumbai out of the game. The seamers ripped the top-order apart and K. Gowtham then got rid of debutante all-rounder Shivam Dubey to leave Mumbai stranded at 90/7, yes you read it right, 90 for seven — at lunch. Akhil Herwadkar (28) and Dhawal Kulkarni (12) will hope to make use of the best batting conditions after the 40-minute break.

11.07 am: Mumbai's horrid first session continues. Shivam Dube is out for 7 (31), caught by C.M. Gautham off K. Gowtham. Mumbai 74/7 in 23.5 overs.

11.00 am: K Gowtham's off-spin is introduced in the 22nd over. But Karnataka's highest wicket-taker of the season has little chance to top his tally, with the seamers having reduced Mumbai to 49/6. In the last half hour, the left-handed duo of Akhil Herwadkar and debutante Shivam Dubey have added 18 runs before the spin is introduced. Mumbai 70/6 in the 23rd over.

10.30 am: Mumbai's slump continues! Six down for 49 and Aditya Tare walks back with just 4 runs against his name. He is caught by Samarth off Abhimanyu Mithun and Mumbai in deep trouble at 49/6 in 16.5 overs.

10.07 am: And the ploy to unsettle the bowlers has failed. Suryakumar Yadav has to take the long walk back. Mumbai loses half its side for 40 runs on the board and with just 12 overs bowled. What a horrid morning for Mumbai this is. Suryakumar Yadav 14 (10), three boundaries, is caught by Gautam off Aravind Sreenath. Karnataka on top in the first hour!

10.05 am: Suryakumar Yadav is taking the non-conventional route. He has bludgeoned three boundaries and has moved to 14 off just nine balls.

Karnataka captain Vinay Kumar inspects the pitch ahead of match and it looks like he has read it spot on! A hat-trick to leave Mumbai stuttering.

9.51 am: Vinay Kumar at it again ! Picks up his and the team's fourth wicket. Siddesh Lad is back in the hut for 8. He is caught by C.M. Gautam. Mumbai 21/4 in 8.4 overs. Vinay Kumar has taken four wickets for six runs.

9.45 am: Akhil Herwadkar and Siddhesh Lad have taken Mumbai to 19/3 in 10 overs.

Vinay Kumar has marked his 100th first-class appearance for Karnataka in style as the Karnataka captain's hat-trick has left Mumbai in shambles. Vinay moved the last ball of the first over just a little bit after pitching it in the perfect channel to see Shaw offering catching practice to Karun Nair in the first slip.

First ball of his next over was a virtual repeat with Jay Bista being the victim. A panicked Mumbai camp then promoted Akash Parkar at No 4, to see off the new ball but Vinay pitched the next one full to trap Parkar in front of the wickets and burst into celebrations.

9.30 am: Akhil Herwadkar and Siddesh Lad have a job on hands. Mumbai has been pushed on the backfoot straightaway. 13/3 in the 6th over.

SSLIVE-VINAYjpg
Vinay Kumar is pumped up after his hat-trick. What a start for Karnataka! His 100th match and a hat-trick.

9.18 am: Vinay Kumar takes a hat-trick! What a start this is for Karnataka. Akash Parkar is out for no score, lbw to Vinay. Mumbai 7/3. Vinay Kumar's figures reads 1.2-0-2-3.

9.17 am: Vinay Kumar is breathing fire here! Jay Bista is out for 1. Mumbai 7/2.

9.15 am: What a start for Karnataka!  Prithvi Shaw departs for 2 and Mumbai loses its first wicket in the first over. He is caught by Karun Nair off Vinay Kumar. Mumbai 6/1.

Here are the playing XIs.
