SCORECARD

FOLLOW DAY 5 LIVE:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

AND THAT'S STUMPS!  Sundar and Ashwin have seen out the overs in another day dominated by Joe Root's boys. Dominic Bess enjoyed his first outing in India after snapping the cream of the Indian batting - Pujara, Kohli, Rahane and a dangerous Rishabh Pant.

The Indian batting order suffered a collaps pretty early on as Jofra Archer waltzed the openers Rohit and Gill. The skipper Kohli and his deputy Rahane soon followed as India fell to the ditch. The resolve of Pujara and a freak-show from Pant motored India from the rough before Bess' fortune was greater than the batsmen.

Come Monday, India will have to bat as long as possible to relieve England of a realistic chance of winning this Test match. That's all for the day, folks! Do join us tomorrow for the action!

India 253/6 after 73 overs: Nothing lethal and out of the box from Archer except one bumper to Ashwin. Ashwin ducks well and with less than five minutes to go, India would hope to preserve its wickets before stumps.

Archer back for one final spell.

India 247/6 after 70 overs: Sundar and Ashwin fight on as there is no sense of some  late pace from England. Root is continuing with Bess and Leach and the offie-duo at the crease have used all their knowledge of the trade to wield the willow and keep England at bay for now.

India 237/6 after 66 overs: England loses two reviews in three overs as Washington is first struck on the pads outside off and then the back leg again a few deliveries later. A shot wasn't offered on either of the occasions and thus the impact was ruled out of the equation. The HawkEye shows the predicted trajectory to be leaping well over the off-stump in both the instances.

Chennai folks, here's some good news!

India 235/6 after 63 overs: Stokes is back into the attack and after bowling three to Ashwin, he chooses to run in from round the wicket for Sundar. Not much of batting strength remaining in the hut, so the duo in the middle, have to handle things patiently.

India 229/6 after 60 overs: Bess and Leach continue the attack as they bowl to local boys, Ashwin and Sundar. The runs have drained out obviously with the departure of Rishabh Pant.

India 225/6 after 57 overs: PAAAAANTTT! OUT! He has thrown it away. Bess has his fourth as Pant can't restrain himself from going after a juicy delivery. It was there for the taking but Pant played against the turn and has cost himself a hundred and more importantly India is put on the backfoot once again. Rishabh Pant c Leach b Bess 91 (88b 9x4 5x6)

India 210/5 after 54 overs: Pant continues the assault on the spinners. Sundar is off to a start at the other end but India hangs on a tether led by Pant here. England will eye to get him back to the dugout before the end of the day.

India 192/5 after 51 overs: OUT! Bess picks his third! Pujara has given it away in rather bizarre fashion.  Short from Bess and Pujara pulls the ball which it hits the short leg fielder and rebounds to Burns at short midwicket. Unlucky for Pujara after rebuilding the Indian innings. Bess has removed the fame trio of Puji, VIrat and Rahane, nothing more a visting offie could ask for here. Cheteshwar Pujara c Burns b Bess 73 (143b 11x4 0x6)

India 182/4 after 48 overs: Pant and Pujara notches up a 100-run partnership. The pair has motored along and surprisingly Pujara has participated in his own way in collecting the runs as well!

India 172/4 after 45 overs: Pant continues to bludgeon the bowlers on every loose delivery that comes his way. Anderson and Archer has found it a bit tough to keep up with the ball that has lost a portion of its seam completely. Mind you, there's 35 overs yet to be bowled.

India 155/4 after 42 overs: Archer attacks the stumps and Pant provides a full bat. Jofra has kept the ball slightly more full for Pujara, inviting him for the drive as the pair regroup well after tea.

We are back for the final session! Pant and Pujara walks out to the crease as Jofra Archer returns with the ball.

India 154/4 after 41 overs: TEA! England has removed the big men, Kohli and Rahane, courtesy some fine bowling from Bess and an excellent catch from Joe Root. And in came, Rishabh Pant who event about stuff in his typical grandeur. Pant went ballistic against Jack Leach, stepping out to every loose delivery to tonk it for six. The southpaw notched up his fifty in just 40 deliveries with a silent guardian working his way through at the other end.

Pujara witnessed a heap of wickets fall around him but once again stood up against a challenge. Pujara worked on rotating the strike more often unlike his usual self and has got himself to a fifty as well . India would love to have the Puji-Pant pair play out the final session and ensure that the side is out of danger of a follow-on. At tea: Pujara 53* (111 balls) Pant 54* (44 balls)

India 153/4 after 40 overs: Fifties for Pujara and Pant! Pujara reaches the feat with an excellent step-out drive through the covers, and Pant takes on Leach in his customary style down the ground to rack up his half-century. India crosses 150 in the process.

India 143/4 after 39 overs: Pant and Pujara are nearing their fifties. A refreshing partnership between the Yin and Yang of the Indian side. Pant has now taken on Bess as well, but the offie  unlike Leach draws the ball further outside off to put Pant on a cautious note.

India 129/4 after 36 overs: Pant madness! He has demolished Leach's figures with four massive sixes! This has been a welcome change albeit at high stakes. Pant has set up a plan. This is not a guy without a plan. Just like how he took on Lyon in Australia, he has lashed out a plan for Leach. Leach has failed to tweak his line and Pant has cashed in on every occassion.

India 107/4 after 32 overs: Pant on fire! 15 runs from the over. Pant smashes Leach for two massive sixes over mid-wicket as India crosses the 100-run mark with a struggle.

India 92/4 after 31 overs: Pant has shown his intent to take on any loose delivery from the spinner. One might wonder if that would be the right approach for the session, but that's Rishabh Pant and that's how he goes about his proceedings. Pujara has held one end with resolve.

India 73/4 after 27 overs: Bess to Rahane. OUT! Whattaa catch from Joe Root! A delivery meant to be hit and Rahane steps out to the loopy delivery to hit it through covers. Rahane fails to keep it low and the ball flies hard to skipper Root's left who completes a sensational one-handed diving catch! England is well and truly on top here now.  Ajinkya Rahane c Root b Bess 1 (6b 0x4 0x6)

Test Average in the last 7 innings: 23: Rohit Sharma 18: Virat Kohli

India 71/3 after 25 overs: Bess to Kohli. OUT! The big fish is dismissed. The offie has had the wood over Kohli post lunch and has castled the Indian skipper with an absolute beauty. Bess draws Kohli to play outside the off on the rough. The ball drifts in and Kohli gets an inside-edge straight to short leg. Kohli's angled bat to the covers has cost him having taken his eyes off the ball for a moment. Ollie Pope makes no mistake as England gobbles the captain cheaply. A massive over in the context of the game as India slump further. Virat Kohli c Pope b Bess 11 (48b 0x4 0x6)

India 69/2 after 22 overs: Bess has interestingly put Kohli under check. Kohli presented a low chance to short leg off Bess' last over and Anderson continues to attack the channel outside off. Jimmy has begun to hide the seam through his run-up.

Ruffled him a bit and VK has a look from the other end.

India 65/2 after 19 overs: Pujara steps out to spin! And it would be Ravi Ashwin in the dugout that would have the chills. A six here and Ash would have to keep his word to shave half of the stubble! Nevertheless, Pujara has ensured a proactive run at the crease.

Dom Bess replaces Jimmy Anderson.

India 63/2 after 18 overs: Archer and Anderson continue to nag the fourth stump channel. Kohli and Pujara have met the ball above the bounce and has kept the duo quiet. Root may enforce a spell of spin soon.

India 61/2 after 15 overs: A fine over from Jimmy as he attacks Kohli outside the off-stump channel. Kohli comfortably quells Anderson with a forward block.

We are back for the second session! Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara walk out to the middle. A crucial session for India to stay in the hunt. James Anderson is back with the ball.

India 59/2 after 14 overs: And that would be Lunch! England snatches the first session on Day 3 as Jofra Archer removed the Indian openers cheaply with some fine bowling on his first tour to the sub-continent. Skipper Kohli and Pujara have their work cut out for the rest of the day as a slip-up could help England target a win from unlikely scenarios.

India 59/2 after 13 overs: Spin from both ends as Bess enters the attack as well. England has come well prepared with its plans and has executed it to perfection. The seamers have put India on the backfoot early up and has eased up the introduction of the young spinners.

England invites spin for the first time. Jack Leach with the ball.

India 45/2 after 10 overs: OUT! Archer removes Gill! Gill flicks his first ball through the leg-side for a cracker and Archer quickly straightens the ball next up to Gill. He chips the ball towards mid-on and fails to keep ball down. Anderson dives to his left and pockets an excellent catch to jolt India further. Gill's elegant stay at the crease comes to an end. Skipper Kohli enters and Acher greets him with a couple of harsh bouncers. Shubman Gill c Anderson b Archer 29 (47m 28b 5x4 0x6)

The chairman of selectors is having a seat!

India 40/1 after 9 overs: Interesting from Stokes to come around the wicket for the right-handers in his first over. Gill and Pujara comfortably work out the singles.

Ben Stokes into the attack.

India 35/1 after 7 overs: Delectable from Gill! Anderson persists to the leg-side line and Gills creams two excellent flicks to the mid-wicket fence.

India 20/1 after 4 overs: OUT! Archer dismisses Rohit! A cracking delivery just in the thin channel outside off and Rohit falls for the trap. No feet movement whatsoever and the Indian opener felt for the ball and India has an early blow in its innings. Rohit Sharma c †Buttler b Archer 6 (9b 1x4 0x6)

Rohit Sharma in home Tests before today: 14 Tests 1325 Runs 88.33 Average 6 Hundreds

Last three home innings : 6, 21, 6 (today)

Rohit has crossed 50 just once in his last seven innings.

England has asked for a heavy-roller on the pitch at the innings break. Root and Co. would want the track to crack open to make it difficult for the Indian batsmen to amass the runs freely.

India 10/0 after 2 overs: Gill takes on Archer's short-ball! Archer bowls a steep bumper for the last ball of the over and Gill confidently pulls it to midwicket for a boundary with control.

India 2/0 after 1 over: The openers begin their account as Anderson follows a leg-stump line first up. Jimmy is unhappy with his line and straightens up a bit for the last ball of the over.

India has its task cut out with a daunting total ahead. The Hitman-Shubman opening combo will come up against a stern pace attack in Archer and Anderson with Stokes as an ally. The Indian openers have walked out to the crease.  Jimmy Anderson up with the new ball.

The Hitman's got some fans in the stands.

England 578 all out after 190.1 overs: OUT! Ashwin cleans up Anderson. Anderson is done with a sluggish defensive play and attempts a sweep off a full bowl. Ashwin castles the stumps and the England innings finally comes to a close. James Anderson b Ashwin 1 (12b 0x4 0x6)

England 574/9 after 187 overs: Pant misses a stumping! Leach steps out to attack Ashwin but the offie bounces the ball sharply from the rough. Pant collects the ball and slips it before knocking the stumps.  Ashwin attemps a carrom ball to Anderson and it misses the leg-stump by a whisker! Frustrations continue for Kohli.

England 567/9 after 186 overs: New-ball taken.  And OUT! Bumrah gets Bess off the first delivery with the new ball!  Tails in sharply from the middle-stump line and Bess misses the ball that zings onto his pads. Kohli would be ruing himself for not taking the ball a little early on. A resolute innings from Bess comes to an end. Dom Bess lbw b Bumrah 34 (119m 105b 6x4 0x6)

England 567/8 after 185 overs: Bess takes on Ashwin! Ash comes from around the wicket and darts in one as Bess advances and lofts it over mid-on for a boundary. Bumrah has dished out everything at this pair but Bess has taken the mantle to protect Leach against him.

India bowled as many as 20 no-balls in the innings. These are the joint-most number of no-balls by India in a home Test innings since 2009 (20vs SL, Ahmedabad) and most by any team since 2015.

England 557/8 after 182 overs: We have no-ball no. 20! Bumrah tries for the extra zip and nearly has Leach wrapped on the pads but a faint inside-edge saves him.

England 556/8 after 181 overs: Ashwin runs through a quick over as India continues to operate with the old ball.

Day 3 Underway! The Indian side regroups on the field with Dom Bess and Jack Leach walking out to the middle.

India conceding 500-plus runs at home last three instances:

v England, Chennai, 2021*

v England, Rajkot, 2016 (Draw)

v England, Kolkata, 2012 (Lost)

All eyes will be on the opening pair. Rohit in particular, as India tracks a daunting total.

The blade is out | Can the Hitman take charge on the Chepauk track?

Right, the team huddle is out on the field. The Indians will finally hope to make merry against a challenging English side today.

8:30 am: We are an hour away from action. India will aim to bowl out the Englishman in the early moments of Day 3 to maintain any realistic chances of playing for a win.

A special day in Indian cricket history!

Numbers Game - Day 2

India bowled as many as 19 no-balls in the innings so far. These are the most number of no-balls by India in a Test innings since 2010 (16 vs SL, P Sara Oval) and most by any team since 2015.

Joe Root shared a 200-run stand with Dominic Sibley before adding 124 runs along with Stokes. This is the second time in 35 Tests (since Jan 2013 in India) that 100+ partnerships have been registered for successive wickets.

Previous: 115 for fifth and 164 for sixth wicket by South Africa in Vizag, 2019/20.

MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai became the first Indian venue to record 10 double centuries: G Viswanath (1982), Sunil Gavaskar (1983), Mike Gatting (1985), Graham Fowler (1985), Dean Jones (1986), Matthew Hayden (2001), Virender Sehwag (2008), MS Dhoni (2013), Karun Nair (2016), Joe Root (2021)

Stokes - the six machine

Ben Stokes now has the most Test sixes by an England players outside home (44), going past Kevin Pietersen's 43. Since his debut, no batsman has hit more Test sixes than Stokes (77).  The southpaw also reached the 1,000-run mark against India in international cricket.

Joe Root's record-breaking conquest

Preview

After forcing the Indians to a gruelling 180 overs on the field, England is just not done with it yet. Finishing day two at a mammoth 555/8 after a magnificent double ton from skipper Joe Root and a whirlwind 82 from his deputy, Ben Stokes, England aims to bat as long as possible as India failed to get a grip on the visitor's tail.

Dropped catches, a heap of no balls and understandably poor energy from Kohli's boys cost them for most of Saturday's play, save for a couple of wickets later in the day from the spinners and two absolute beauties from Ishant Sharma.

England's spinners Dom Bess and Jack Leach have managed to frustrate the Indians with the bat in a bittersweet tale that continues between Kohli's bowlers and tail-enders across the globe.

With the pitch offering nothing more than a hint of late reverse swing for the pacers, England is poised to have a tough outing on a barren Chepauk pitch as well. With an inexperienced spin line-up to its credit, India will hope to take out Dom Bess and Jack Leach to rake in the runs through the day, in a bid to move the tie to its end.

What they said

"The pitch is still very good for batting. I think our batsmen will also be able to score a lot of runs. Taking their wickets, especially on a track like this, felt really good as they are excellent international players. Moreover, it also helped break a crucial partnership," Shahbaz Nadeem on the Chepauk track and India's plans for Day 3.

“I think there has been spin, bounce and reverse. We just played really well, you have got to give us credit there. It has not been exactly easy there. We gave ourselves a great opportunity to get in and score runs on a pitch that is actually offering for the bowlers," Ben Stokes on England's batting in slightly difficult conditions
