[STUMPS- DAY 2]

Until then, this is Shivansh Gupta bidding goodbye. CIAO!

That's all the action we have for you today. Thank you so much for joining us. Do join us tomorrow at 9:30am for all the action, commentary, highs and lows from day three of the final Test match in Ranchi.

Rohit Sharma's double century and Ajinkya Rahane's century was capped off by Umesh Yadav's six-hitting spree as Kohli declared the innings on 497/9.

What followed next left even the likes of Sunil Gavaskar on commentary stunned. The Indian pacers, Mohammad Shami and Umesh Yadav, bowled just a solitary over each but it was enough to rock the South African boat. Shami got rid of Dean Elgar before Yadav dismissed de Kock with a vicious bouncer that clipped the edge of his bat. Saha, on both occasions, gathered the ball with ease to complete the dismissals.

New batsman in: Skipper Faf du Plessis walks out to bat

de Kock 4(6, 1x4) ct Saha b Yadav

OUT NEXT BALL! BOTH OPENERS GONE! What an absolute ripper of a delivery from Umesh to get the better of de Kock. A vicious bouncer aimed directly at de Kock, who didn't have enough time to duck. Hence, the batsman tried to lean across, but ended up edging the ball to the keeper. What a start by the Indian quicks.

de Kock off the mark. It was pure timing there. He punched the ball off the back foot for a brilliant boundary.

Umesh Yadav will share the new ball with Shami.

South Africa 4/1 | 3:08 PM

Overs- 1

de Kock 0(0), Hamza 0(4)

Shami is all fired up. Welcomes the visitor with a bouncer and then beats him again the next ball with a vicious inswinger. Shami is bowling at searing good pace.

New batsman in: Zubayr Hamza, playing only in his second Test, comes in to bat at no. 3.

Elgar 0(2) ct Saha b Shami

GONE FOR DUCK! Mohammad Shami draws first blood on the second ball of the innings. The first one was dragged down the leg side and it took off to run away for four byes. But this one, Shami pitches it just short of good length, angling away from the left-handed Elgar. The rising delivery clips the glove of Elgar, who tried to take evasive action by backing out from the shot. However, he was a tad late.

Weather update: " Update it's gone dark here,  the rain clouds are lurking on one side of the ground" reports Ayan Acharya

---START OF SESSION 3, DAY 2 -- -

Our reporter Ayan Acharya recaps an entertaining session:

South Africa's day went from bad, worse to hopeless as India continued to pile misery on the opposition bowlers. If Rohit's double hundred and Rahane's century deflated the attack, then Umesh Yadav's 10-ball cameo comprising five sixes -- all off George Linde -- broke whatever false confidence the Proteas may have gained after seeing the backs of Rohit and Rahane. India declared on 497/9.

---END OF SESSION 2, DAY 2 -- -

India 497/9 DECLARED | 2:45 PM

Overs- 116.3

Nadeem 1(5), Shami 10(11)

INDIA DECLARES AND THAT WILL BE TEA! Virat Kohli comes out of the dressing room and signals declaration and with that, teams will take tea. Another show of batting depth by the host comes to an end.

India 495/9 | 2:38 PM

New batsman in: Mohammad Shami is the last man in.

Yadav 31(10, 5x6) ct Klaasen b Linde

OUT! The fireworks have come to an end! While trying to go for a huge heave down the ground for another six, Yadav ends up top-edging the ball. Klaasen does well to hang on to the skier. Fourth wicket for George Linde.

THREE SIXES OFF THE LINDER OVER AND UMESH YADAV REACHES HIS HIGHEST-SCORE OF 31.

India 464/8 | 2:25 PM

Overs- 113

He negotiates the first ball of his Test career with ease by lunging forward to defend a flighted delivery to mid-off.

New batsman in: Debutant Shahbaz Nadeem walks out to bat at no. 10.

Ashwin 14(16, 1x4, 4s-1) st Klaasen b D Piedt

STUMPED! Dane Piedt finally gets a wicket as R. Ashwin is stumped by Klaasen, who makes no mistake this time. In fact, he did very well to react quickly, dislodge the bails and catch Ashwin just short of his ground.

India 462/7 | 2:20 PM

Overs- 112

Ashwin 2(3), Yadav 12(2)

TWO BACK-TO-BACK SIXES TO BEGIN WITH! Umesh Yadav is not going to hold back and has made his intentions very clear. A huge slog for a six for deep mid-wicket followed by another maximum down the ground. He is off to a flying start.

New batsman in: Umesh Yadav walks out to bat.

Jadeja 51 (119 4x4)  ct. Klaasen b Linde

AND GONE NEXT BALL! He edges the very next ball to the keeper while trying to a play a wild cover drive a long way from his body. A good innings, nonetheless, comes to an end. Interesting to note that another batsman has fallen after getting to a milestone. Rahane after his 100 , Sharma after his 200 and now Jadeja after his 50.

FIFTY UP FOR JADEJA! If there is someone who has repaid the faith of his captain and coach this series apart from Rohit Sharma, it is Ravindra Jadeja! His purple patch with the bat continues!

India 419/6 | 1:50 PM

Overs- 104

Jadeja 32(38), Ashwin 2(3)

R. Ashwin playes a well-timed cover drive, which the fielder in the deep cleans up with ease, and gets of the mark with a couple.

New batsman in: Ravichandran Ashwin comes in to bat at no. 8.

Saha 24 (42 3x4)  b Linde

BOWLED HIM! Linde picks up his second wicket and he would have enjoyed this one even more! Saha played for the turn, but the ball held its shape and line and whizzed past Saha's bat and pad to crash into the middle stump. Brilliant delivery to dismiss a dangerous-looking Saha.

India 400/5 | 1:28 PM

Overs- 100

Jadeja 28(71), Saha 16(33)

400 up for India! Wriddhiman Saha pushes the ball wide of cover as the host cross the 400-run mark.

These are ominous signs. Once again, a heavy cloud cover looms over the stadium. The quality of light has drastically dipped and a few bulbs in the floodlights have been switched on.

India 385/5 | 1:05 PM

Overs- 95

Jadeja 22(52), Saha 8(22)

Drinks break.

India 375/5 | 12:40 PM

New batsman in: Wicket-keeper batsman Wriddhiman Saha comes in to bat at no. 7.

Rahane 212 (255 28x4, 6x6) c Ngidi b Rabada

ROHIT DEPARTS! He is unable to clear the boundary for the third time in this session with a pull shot as he drags this down right down the throat of deep fine leg. What a mighty fine innings comes to an end. All the South African team members run up to the man of the hour to congratulate him. Lungi Ngidi with the catch as Rabada picks up his third wicket.

India 370/4 | 12:25 PM

Overs- 88

Sharma 199(248), Jadeja 15(33)

WHAT A WAY TO GET TO YOUR DOUBLE HUNDRED, ROHIT! It was short and Rohit Sharma pulls it off the front foot and clears the deep mid-wicket fielder and the rope with ease. He got a hundred with six and got to a double with a six. Sheer class from the Hitman as he raises his arms and bat in the air withe a beaming smile on his face.

He follows it up with another pull shot off the front foot over deep mid-wicket for a six two balls later. This wasn't as short, but given Rohit's class and timing, it looked very easy.

India 357/4 | 12:23 PM

Overs- 87

Sharma 199(248), Jadeja 15(33)

Rabada continues from the other end. He also starts with a maiden!

India 357/4 | 12:18 PM

Overs- 86

Sharma 199(248), Jadeja 15(27)

MAIDEN OVER! Nervy Rohit Sharma is still not-out on 199. He defended the first three deliveries, that were bowled fast and straight by Ngidi, with soft hands before the bowler dragged one down to the leg side. It was well fielded by the keeper. He tried to take a quick single, but the mid-wicket fielder was to quick to collect it. The last ball was played to the gully fielder with ease by Rohit.

---START OF SESSION 2, DAY 2 -- -

Summary of session one:

27 overs, 133 runs and just a solitary loss of wicket. The host bagged the first session on day two in commanding fashion. Rahane brought up his 11th Test hundred and first at home in three years. Rohit Sharma bettered his previous highest-Test score of 177 and is now one shy of his maiden double hundred.

South Africa, unlike yesterday and contrary to the expectations, bowled extremely poorly in the first hour of the day and the once settled, the batsmen were always going to take spinner for plenty.

Linde eventually brought about the breakthrough after a 267-run stand for the fourth wicket, but that's seem to impact Ravindra Jadeja, who settled in very quickly, or Rohit Sharma as the two notched up a 50-run stand in just 57 balls.

---END OF SESSION 1, DAY 2 -- -

AND THAT'S LUNCH!

India 357/4 | 11:28 AM

Overs- 85

Sharma 199(242), Jadeja 15(27)

50-RUN PARTNERSHIP OFF JUST 56 BALLS! Jadeja edges the ball between the slip cordon and gully for four. Rohit Sharma remains stranded on 199 as the players take lunch on day two. A couple of streaky shots, a couple of inside edges by Rohit that just missed the stumps, but no harm done. Very interesting last over there.

India 350/4 | 11:28 AM

Overs- 84

Sharma 196(240), Jadeja 11(25)

FOUR, FOUR AND HE INCHES CLOSER! Rohit welcomes Nortje back into the attack with consecutive boundaries and then picks up a single to move to 196. INDIA CROSSES THE 300 MARK AND ONE MORE OVER TO GO BEFORE LUNCH!

India 339/4 | 11:22 AM

Overs- 83

Sharma 184(229), Jadeja 11(23)

FLICKED FOR FOUR! Rabad concedes seven off the first over with the new ball. Jadeja hits his first boundary of the match. A full, straight and fast one from Rabada and all Jadeja had to was get bat on ball and place it behind square. The ball beat the fine leg fielder with ease.

Change in bowling: du Plessis brings Rabada back into the attack for the second new ball.

India 332/4 | 11:17 AM

Overs- 82

Sharma 184(229), Jadeja 7(22)

CAREER-BEST SCORE FOR ROHIT! With a boundary, Rohit crosses his previous highest-score of 177, that he smashed against West Indies in 2013 at the Eden Garden. He is currently on 183.

REVIEW LOST! Dane Piedt thinks he has trapped Sharma in front of his stumps, who plays an unconvincing sweep. Umpire gives it not-out as he thinks the ball has pitched outside the leg stump line. Faf du Plessis goes for the review and the reply shows that the ball was pitching a few centimetres outside of leg.

India 315/4 | 11:02 AM

Overs- 77

Sharma 174(220), Jadeja 2(8)

OFF THE MARK! Jadeja hangs back for a short pitched delivery turning in sharply, and flicks it to deep square leg for a single.

India 306/4 | 10:55 AM

Overs- 76

Sharma 167(212), Jadeja 0(3)

He ends with a wicket maiden.

New batsman in: Ravindra Jadeja, the only left-handed batsman in the team, comes in to bat.

Rahane 115(192, 17x4, 1x6) c Klaasen b Linde

MAIDEN TEST WICKET FOR LINDE AND MAIDEN TEST DISMISSAL FOR KLAASEN. They combine to break a 267-run stand between Rohit and Rahane

George Linde pitches one just back of the length and the ball turns away from Rahane sharply and is on the rise. Rahane, who had been looking fidgety for a while now, tries to guide it past the keper. However, he ends up edging the ball and a good catch from Klaasen, who doesn't make a mistake this time.

CAUGHT BEHIND! SOUTH AFRICA HAS FINALLY STRUCK! The breakthrough it had been desperately waiting for.

India 306/3 | 10:48 AM

Overs- 75

Sharma 167(212), Rahane 115(189)

ALSO, 300 UP FOR INDIA!

THAT'S JUST PUNISHMENT NOW! Dane Piedt in his next over, is smashed for three boundaries. First, Rohit Sharma makes short work of a boundary through extra cover. Then Rahane hits back-to-back boundaries.

India 289/3 | 10:42 AM

Overs- 73

Sharma 160(208), Rahane 105(181)

STUMPING MISSED! Dane Piedt could have had a wicket in his first over of the day. he foxed Rahane with a looping delivery that held its line after pitching. Rahane walked out of his crease while trying to get to the ball and it was all of Heinrich Klaasen's to take care of. However, he was late on the receive as the ball hit the upper part of his palm and bounced out. Rahane survives!

Change in bowling: Dane Piedt is brought into the attack.

India 284/3 | 10:35 AM

Overs- 72

Sharma 159(206), Rahane 101(177)

The first hour belongs to the host. 60 runs in 14 overs. The boundaries haven't been hard to come by and both batsman have made significant progress. Rohit got to his 150, while Rahane got to his first Test hundred in Tests.

India 277/3 | 10:25 AM

Overs- 70

Sharma 150(199), Rahane 100(172)

150 FOR HITMAN! Rohit Sharma continues to make merry and pile more and more runs. His 2nd score of 150+ in the series and third in his carrer. A little shimmy down the track and plays the ball down the line for an easy single. He would love to do something he couldn't do last time he crossed 150. That is convert into a double hundred.

Change in bowling: Geroge Linde is brought into the attack.

India 277/3 | 10:20 AM

Overs- 69

Sharma 149(196), Rahane 100(169)

This is his first century at home in three years. It's taken a long time to come, but he is batting as well as ever.

HUNDRED UP! Ajinkya Rahane takes a quick, nervy single by playing the ball towards short cover with short hands AND HE RAISES HIS BAT! 11th Test hundred for Rahane

India 267/3 | 10:15 AM

Overs- 68

Sharma 126(183), Rahane 91(152)

Runs are coming thick and fast for India this morning. Sharma hits Ngidi to the fence thrice in the same over and that was the ninth boundary of the morning. Rahane takes a single off the last ball and will retain strike at 97.

India 241/3 | 9:55 AM

Overs- 64

Sharma 126(183), Rahane 91(152)

Change in bowling: Lungi Ngidi comes into the attack.

India 237/3 | 9:48 AM

Overs- 63

Sharma 122(177), Rahane 91(152)

MARCHES INTO THE 90s! Rahane is looking at easy at the crease and this elegant cover drive on the up off Rabada bears testament to it.

India 232/3 | 9:44 AM

Overs- 61

Sharma 121(176), Rahane 87(141)

FOUR! Rohit Sharma gets off the mark on the day with a beautiful boundary down the ground. He drives it on the up and past the mid-on fielder Ngidi. It was on the air for a while, but nothing troublesome about it.

India 228/3 | 9:38 AM

Overs- 60

Sharma 117(170), Rahane 87(141)

Anrich Nortje to Rahane! The bowler starts with a full one right on the money and Rahane defends it with comfort. BEAUTIFULLY DRIVEN THROUGH THE COVERS. A good stride out from Rahane, open the faces of the bat and he middles the pitched up ball for the first boundary of the day. He drives the next one, but it's well fielded by George Linde, the debutant. Four off the over.

India 224/3 | 9:34 AM

Overs- 59

Sharma 117(170), Rahane 83(135)

Bang on target! Good delivery up front from Rabada. Back of a length delivery and Sharma leans forward to defend it with ease. Next three deliveries are much fuller from the Proteas bowler. Lovely drive on the fifth ball, but the ball is hit straight to the mid-off fielder. A small cheer from the crowd, much to the liking of Sharma. Maiden over to start with!

---START OF SESSION 1, DAY 2 -- -

Pitch report of day two:  A couple of massive cracks on the pitch. The good areas continue to be good. As Sunil Gavaskar had expected, this pitch played better than it looked. There is a patch outside the off-stump in the driving zone of the batsman. If the ball continues to land there, the cracks will open up and the ball will do something, but the pitch is still looking good for batting where a lot of runs are yet to be scored.

Weather update: "Sun playing hide and seek,  slight nip in the air. Might drizzle later in the day though. First hour very crucial for South Africa. If there is  some moisture in the pitch, Rabada would want to exploit it.  We also saw reverse swing,  just a slight hint of it,  towards the end of day's play yesterday," informs our reporter Ayan Acharya.

India 224/3 | 8:20 AM

Overs- 58

Sharma 117(164), Rahane 83(135)

DAY 1 REPORT from our reporter Ayan Acharya.

Rohit Sharma (117*, 164b, 14x4, 4x6) scored his third hundred of the series and  Ajinkya Rahane  (83*, 135b, 11x4, 1x6) came within 17 runs of his 11th Test ton as India weathered a probing first spell from  Kagiso Rabada  to reach a commanding 224/3 before bad light and rain stopped play on day one at the JSCA Stadium in Ranchi.

On a nippy morning, with winter drawing in and the sun playing hide-and-seek, something happened to India, something it had not experienced before in the series: Pressure.

Fiery spell

Unlike in Visakhapatnam and Pune, Rabada used the new ball to his advantage and aided by some early movement pushed the host on the backfoot. He got opener Mayank Agarwal out in the slips before removing Pujara for a nine-ball duck, with one that nipped back in and struck the No. 3 plumb in front.

But it wasn't so much the dismissals but what happened next that gave a glimpse of Rabada's bristling attacking intent: India captain  Virat Kohli  was greeted to the crease with a pacy bouncer, forcing the right-hander to take evasive action. Rabada then went on to produce a gem of an 11th over, where he could have easily had Rohit out twice but didn't.

It began with a fullish outswinger, followed by an in-dipper that struck Rohit in front but replays confirmed an inside edge. He capped it off with one that was angled at Rohit before seaming away with extravagant bounce, squaring up the batsman. At the end of the terrific opening spell, Rabada's figures read  7-4-15-2.

The warning bells were sounded when  Anrich Nortje  set up Kohli for an lbw dismissal; his maiden Test wicket. After getting two deliveries to move away, he pitched one full, shaping in to hit Kohli on the pads. The batsman reviewed but replays showed the ball was crashing the outside of leg-stump. Ranchi wasn't as hot as the previous two venues, allowing the pacers to keep up their intensity across long spells.

Rohit, Rahane dominate

If the first session was about the visitor wresting the initiative from India, the second was about Rohit and Rahane's counterattacking cricket. The two upped the scoring rate, with the latter displaying some attractive strokeplay. Rahane took on South Africa's best bowler Rabada, collecting three boundaries (including an edge to third-man) off his first over after lunch.

Rabada's second spell of 4-0-30-0 coupled with a century stand, off 128 balls between Rahane and Rohit allowed the host a much-needed release. Rohit started playing more freely in the post-lunch session, the pick of the shots was an effortless loft off Dane Piedt to clear long-off.

He moved into the nineties with another six, this time over long-off and reached his century in 130 balls, becoming only the second Indian opener after Sunil Gavaskar to score three hundreds in a series. India scored 134 runs in the second session as the wheels once again came off South Africa's bowling.

Rahane and Rohit had added 184 for a record fourth-wicket stand against South Africa, surpassing the Rahane-Kohli partnership of 178 in the Pune Test when deteriorating light forced the stoppage of play.
