Leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal is an important member of Royal Challengers Bangalore's attack and has made an impact in this year’s Indian Premier League by claiming seven wickets in six matches.
Ahead of RCB’s Sunday date with Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens, Chahal spoke about his own bowling and his expectations from the match.
Excerpts:
Wrist spinners doing well in IPL:
Wrist spinners are different from other spinners. On a flat wicket, they can turn the ball more compared to an off-spinner or a left-arm spinner. If the pitch is turning, leg-spinners can be potent. I think, in IPL, the leg-spinners are always on top.
How his life changed since taking six wickets (in a T20I) against England:
My life has totally changed since the six-wicket haul. There are more responsibilities on me, more pressure. Now I need to do more compared to what I did last year.
Bowling with Samuel Badree:
It will help RCB a lot because he bowls in the power play and I can bowl in the middle. A guy like (Pawan) Negi can bowl in the 13th to 15th overs phase. Last year, I was the only one bowling in the power play and middle overs. Now we have two spinners who can bowl in the power play.
Character of changed Eden Gardens wicket:
For me, I love to bowl on flat tracks. I don’t like bowling on turning pitches because on turning pitches most of the balls would just beat the batsmen. On flat tracks, you can plan — when to bowl sliders, when to bowl a googly. I just like a little bit of pace in the pitch.
On plans against Sunil Narine the batsman:
I never bother who is batting. I always back my strength. Everyone knows he opened in the Big Bash League. If I'm bowling to him, I will consider him a proper batsman not a tail-ender.
Good total on Eden:
The outfield is fast in Kolkata. Rain came last night, so dew is there. A total of 180-190 is good.
