At a time when most of the state associations have finalised their coaches for the upcoming domestic season, Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) has decided to start the selection process only after ‘consulting Yuvraj Singh and Harbhajan Singh’.
“They are our senior cricketers and they should also have a say in the process. We will conduct a meeting with them and then go ahead with the process,” PCA secretary, R.P. Singla, told Sportstar .
With both the cricketers not in the country, the association plans to have a word them ‘anytime after August 19’ and discuss the possible options.
“We have to only name a head coach and there have been a few applications for the role. We will consult with the seniors and take a call,” Singla, also a former cricketer, said.
Last season, Punjab had appointed Ajay Ratra as the coach, but the team failed to qualify for the knock-outs in the Ranji Trophy. This time, the association has decided not to continue with Ratra.
Punjab had a rather disappointing outing last season—picking up 18 points from six games. While the young cricketers put up a resilient show, the side missed Yuvraj and Harbhajan for most of the season.
“Our focus will be to build a good side and the preparations have already begun,” Singla said, hoping that fortunes will change this time around.
