Stoger confirms Borussia Dortmund departure

Borussia Dortmund will be on the hunt for a new coach for the 2018-19 campaign.

Peter Stoger has confirmed his time in charge of Borussia Dortmund is over.

The 52-year-old announced he will part ways with the club following the 3-1 defeat at Hoffenheim on the final day of the Bundesliga season.

That left Dortmund to cling onto a Champions League spot as they finished ahead of fifth-placed Bayer Leverkusen on goal difference.

Stoger only took over from the sacked Peter Bosz in December having himself been relieved of his duties at Cologne a week earlier.

"This is my last game for BVB, which we decided together some time ago," Stoger said in his post-match media conference.

"A new stimulus, with a new coach, will do the club well."

BVB midfielder Sebastian Rode revealed earlier this month the squad were expecting to have a new man in charge for next term and Stoger's exit suggests a succession plan has been formulated.

Nice's Lucien Favre, who has previously had spells with Hertha Berlin and Borussia Monchengladbach, is widely expected to step in at Signal Iduna Park.

Should he take over, the veteran Swiss will be tasked with turning the club back into title contenders.

Sunday's loss to Hoffenheim saw them finish 29 points shy of champions Bayern Munich and outside the top three for just the second time in eight seasons.

Stoger did manage to provide a measure of stability after Bosz was cut loose, although the short-term contract he was handed never seemed likely to materialise into a permanent appointment.
