Busacca feels that good referees will be able to sell their decisions to the players.

He has officiated in two successive FIFA World Cups and in 2009, he was adjudged best referee in the world, but Massimo Busacca, the FIFA Head of Referees, feels there can never be perfect referees.

“Forget that tomorrow we can have perfect referees, only one person is perfect. That is God. All others, you and me, we all make mistakes. Only, we must try to reduce the mistakes,” Busacca, who is here for the FIFA MA (member associations) referees course, told the media here on Sunday evening.

“We have to trust our instinct, we have to trust our knowledge, we have to trust our communication. Today, if we are top referees, it’s not only about taking a decision but we have to be able to ‘sell’ that decision (to the players and public).

“Sometimes, even if you don’t have the right one (decision), if you are able to sell it, people will buy it. It is related to your personality and knowledge. For referees, it is the same, a referee has to convince everybody that he has tried his best.”

Busacca, who officiated in the 2006 and 2010 World Cups, said it was encouraging to see that the national body, AIFF, is keen on the development of Indian referees.

“We want to work with clear projects. It’s important to see that there are projects which the AIFF is keen to implement. That is important,” he said.

This is the first time an FIFA Head of Referees is visiting India and AIFF general secretary Kushal Das said hat Busacca’s presence was very significant.

He said, in the last few years, AIFF had been working hard to develop referees in the country. Several projects had been introduced and that a lot had been achieved, he added.
