Atletico de Kolkata (ATK), defending champion in Hero Indian Super League (ISL), gained valuable players in creative midfielder Eugeneson Lyngdoh (Rs 1.10 crore), striker Robin Singh (Rs 65 lakh) in the Indian Players draft but had to part ways with defender Pritam Kotal (Rs 75 lakh), who went to Delhi Dynamos FC and Jewel Shaikh (Rs 26 lakh), who was lapped up by FC Pune City. The latter had scored the decisive penalty kick in the title win over Kerala Blasters during the ISL 2016 final.

The Kolkata franchise also added I-League champion Aizawl FC’s midfielder Ashutosh Mehta and forward Jayesh Rane (Rs 45 lakh each). Nine other franchises took part in the draft, expected to make their choice from a pool of 205 players.

Each team is allowed a minimum of 15 and maximum of 18 Indian players. After 15 rounds, 134 players were signed. Franchises can sign more Indians from among the 71 remaining for their respective reserve squads. The surplus players can go back to I-League, to be held simultaneously for the first time by the All India Football Federation (AIFF).

Jamshedpur FC picked 15 from the draft, one player in each round, spending maximum amount of Rs 4.72 crore. Delhi Dynamos FC followed suit and ended up spending Rs 3.91 crores on 15 players.
