Rory McIlroy hopes his Deutsche Bank Championship triumph can act as a catalyst for FedExCup and Ryder Cup glory.

The four-time major champion pulled off what appeared to be an unlikely victory at TPC Boston on Monday, signing for a six-under 65 to finish on 15-under-par.

McIlroy trailed leader Paul Casey by six shots going into the final day, but finished two shots clear of the Englishman to claim his first title in the United States this year.

The Northern Irishman's victory elevated him from 38th to fourth in the FedExCup standings heading into the BMW Championship this week and the world number three is hungry for more success in what has been an underwhelming year.

He said: "One of the things I would like on my golf CV is to win the FedEx Cup. The next two tournaments are huge for me, to try and do that.

"Three holes in, at four over par, there were a lot of things going through my mind and one of them was not winning this tournament. Here we are, 69 holes later and 19 under par for that spell. I played some great golf and holed some great putts this week.

"I am really proud of myself for battling that first day, getting some momentum on Saturday and just going with that. It is nice to get that first win in the States this year.

"Hopefully this is momentum I can bring on to the next couple of weeks and ultimately the Ryder Cup to hopefully help Team Europe win another one of those. I'm really excited going into the last part of the season."

McIlroy knows he still has work to do in order to get back to his very best, having started with a disappointing 71 on Friday.

"I knew my game was in good shape, I just needed to do something with the putting. I found something. I still need to keep going with it. It's definitely not the finished article, but it's a big step in the right direction." he added.

"It's just incredible, this game, how quickly things can change and how quickly things can turn around. It's been a great lesson for me this week not to get down on myself, to stay patient.

"You learn with experience and a little bit more maturity that it's four-round golf tournaments. It's a long time. There's a lot that can happen – and I sort of proved that to myself this week."
