  • Divyansh (Series 6): 103.6

  • Divyansh (Series 5): 104.6
    Deepak (Series 5): 103.8
  • Divyansh (Series 4): 104.6 [10.2, 10.6, 10.2, 10.6, 9.8, 10.7, 10.6, 10.7, 10.9, 10.3]
    Deepak (Series 4): 105.2 [10.2, 10.6, 10.6, 10.6, 10.4, 10.1, 10.6, 10.8, 10.5, 10.8]

The Indians are nowhere near the top 8. Yang is running away with the contest, averaging 10.54. Istvan is second, Kozeniesky third.
  • Divyansh (Series 3): 103.6 [9.9, 9.7, 9.9, 10.5, 10.6, 10.7, 10.7, 10.6, 10.2, 10.8]
    Deepak (Series 3): 103.7 [10.2, 10.5, 10.5, 9.9, 10.3, 10.8, 10.5, 10.5, 10.1, 10.4]

It keeps getting worse. Divyansh has started off the third series with a 9.9 followed by a 9.7 and 9.9. Yikes!
  • Divyansh (Series 2): 103.7 [10.3, 9.8, 10.6, 10.0, 10.6, 10.7, 10.2, 10.8, 10.4, 10.3]
    Deepak (Series 2): 103.8 [ 10.2, 10. 5, 10.4, 10.1, 10.3, 10.7, 10.3, 10.7, 10.1, 10.5]

Although Deepak has overtaken Divyansh for the time being, the horror story is far from being over. To put things into perspective, China's Yang Haoran is registering an average score of 10.55 per shot. The Indians are hitting 10.3.
  • Divyansh (Series 1): 102.7 [10.4, 10.1, 10.3, 10.7, 10.2, 10.4, 10.3, 10.4, 10.2, 9.7]
    Deepak (Series 1): 102.9 [10.4, 10.0, 10.1, 10.2, 10.5, 10.0, 10.2, 10.4, 10.4, 10.7]

The Indian duo are off to a poor start. They are not even figuring in the top 30. Deepak, in fact, at one stage, was only four spots away from being at the bottom of the pile.

- Divyansh (Bib No. 1481) and Deepak (Bib No. 1480) are set to start on lanes 39 and 24. Arch rivals Istvan Peni (HUN), Lucas Kozeniesky (USA), Petar Gorsa (CRO), and Sergey Kameniskiy (ROC) will fire from points 50, 47, 9 and 54, respectively.

MEN'S 10M AIR RIFLE QUALIFICATION FORMAT

In the qualification round, each competitor gets to fire six series of 10 shots. The perfect score in each series is 109 (10.9 x 10) while hitting the bull off all shots will fetch 654 (109 x 6) points.

WOMEN'S SKEET QUALIFICATION ROUND

  • After the second round, Bacosi, Vinogradova, and Wei still hold the lead with 50 points. Costa, meanwhile, has dropped down to 25th after a horrid 20 in the second series.

MEN'S SKEET QUALIFICATION ROUND

  • There are 13 leaders in men's skeet qualification after the first round. Mairaj is one among them with 25 points. Angad has 24 and is placed 22nd.

WOMEN'S 10M AIR PISTOL FINAL

  • 1st Place: Batsarashkina takes GOLD with an Olympic Record score of 240.3, going past Kostadinova off the very last shot.

Gold medallist Vitalina Batsarashkina of the Russian Olympic Committee celebrates after competing in the Women's 10m Air Pistol Final at the Asaka Shooting Range, Tokyo.

  • 2nd Place: Kostadinova (239.4), leading the pack, throughout the elimination, slips to settle for SILVER.
  • 3rd Place: 21 year-old Jiang (218.0) takes BRONZE with two back-to-back 9.3s.
  • 4th Place: Kostevych's 9.3 means the Athens 2004 gold medallist is out of podium contention this time. Her final score: 197.6.
  • 5th Place: Batsarashkina's scoring system throws up an error and she has been asked to retake her last shot. She hits 9.5 and that means Lin has to bow out with 176.6 .
  • 6th Place: Greece's flag-bearer at the opening ceremony and Rio 2016 bronze medallist Korakaki (157.4) walks.
  • 7th Place: Lamolle (134.6) finishes seventh. Both French athletes are now out of the competition.
  • 8th Place: Goberville ( 114.9 ) is the first to be eliminated after Lamolle and Korakaki shoot high 10s.

- After 10 shots, Lamolle is still at the bottom with 95.4 points. Batsarashkina sole leader with 101.3. Kostadinova second with 100.7.

- Lamolle finds herself at the bottom of the pile after the first five shots with 46.7 points. Batsarashkina and Kostadinova are tied on top with 51.1 points.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SKEET QUALIFICATION ROUND

  • Meanwhile, eight people, including Mairaj , are tied for the first spot at men's skeet qualification with 25 points as Round 1 continues with a second batch of shooters.

The first round of the women's event is, however, complete and it has four leaders - with 25 points each - in Diana Bacosi (ITA), Chiara Costa (SEN), Natalia Vinogradova (ROC), Wei Meng (CHN).

WOMEN'S 10M AIR PISTOL QUALIFICATION ROUND

  • Manu (Series 6): 575-14x [10, 10, 10, 9, 10, 10, 9, 9, 10, 8]
    Yashaswini (Series 6): 574-11x [10, 10, 9, 10, 10, 9, 10, 9, 8, 10]

The pressure gets to Manu as she registers an 8 off the last shot. Even Yashaswini hits an 8 off her penultimate.

The Indian challenge is over in women's 10m air pistol! Manu and Yashaswini finish 12th and 13th, respectively.
They'll be absolutely gutted, especially after what Manu had to go through earlier in the round.
  • Manu (Series 5): 480-10x [9, 10, 10, 10, 10, 9, 10, 10, 10, 10]
    Yashaswini (Series 5): 479-10x [9, 10, 9, 10, 10, 9, 9, 10, 10, 10]

Yashaswini has the lead over Manu but she is quite some distance away from the top 8. It isn't easy even when your compatriot has to go through a weapon malfunction on a stage as big as this.

Update: Manu is back in the top 10 after shooting only two 9s in this series. Some recovery, this!
  • Manu (Series 4): 382-9x [10, 10, 9, 10, 9, 10, 9, 9, 10, 9]
    Yashaswini (Series 4): 383-8x [10, 10, 9, 10, 10, 10, 10, 9, 9, 10]

Manu is desperately trying to make up for lost time, even as she continues to slip due to the occasional 9. This is so unfortunate.

Yashaswini is hovering about in the top 20 as well.
  • Manu (Series 3): 287-5x [10, 8, 10, 10, 10, 9, 9, 10, 9, 9]
    Yashaswini (Series 3): 286-6x [10, 9, 10, 8, 8, 10, 10, 10, 9, 10]

Yikes! Yashaswini hits two 8s after nearing the top 10 to slip back to the 20s. That must hurt.

With less than 25 minutes to go, Manu has to now take 30 shots due to the weapon malfunction!
  • Manu (Series 2): 193-4x [9, 10, 10, 9, 9, 9, 10, 10, 9, 10]
    Yashaswini (Series 2): 192-4x [9, 10, 9, 10, 10, 10, 10, 10, 10, 10]

Korakaki has leapfrogged Manu to the third spot. Arunovic goes past as well. They are not letting things go easy.

Jiang loses the top spot to Rasmane followed by France's Mathilde Lamolle and a new leader in Cuba's Laina Perez.

OH NO! Manu, reportedly due to some issues with her gun, has lost more than five minutes. This can't be good...

Yashaswini, meanwhile, stages an excellent recovery with seven back-to-back 10s.

  • Manu (Series 1): 98-4x [10, 10, 10, 9, 9, 10, 10, 10, 10, 10]
    Yashaswini (Series 1): 94-3x [9, 9, 10, 9, 9, 10, 10, 8, 10]

Manu seems confident from the get go, hitting 10s thrice on the trot before delivering two 9s. She recomposes herself to finish third after the first series .

It has not been the best of starts from Yashaswini, who is finding it difficult to pin the bull.

Having led the chart for sometime, Haniyeh Rostamiyan (IRI) slips out of the top 10. China's Jiang Raxin tops with an average score of 9.857 per shot followed by Latvia's Agate Rasmane, averaging 9.833.

- Manu (Bib No. 1471) and Yashaswini (Bib No. 1473) are set to start on lanes 52 and 41. Top rivals Zorana Arunovic (SRB), Anna Korakaki (GRE), Viktoria Chaika (BLR), and Olena Kostevych (UKR) will get going from firing points 47, 35, 11 and 34, respectively.

- 4:42 AM IST: There was a technical glitch at our end so the qualification format couldn't be updated earlier. However, you may expect it to be up in about five minutes from now. We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience.

WOMEN'S 10M AIR PISTOL QUALIFICATION FORMAT

In the qualification round, each competitor gets to fire six series of 10 competition shots at a 10-ring target. 100 is the perfect score off a single series. The top eight shooters advance to the final.

WHAT TO LOOK FORWARD TO

Manu and Yashaswini will take the field up first at 9 AM local time (5:30 AM IST).

Day 1 of the Skeet Women's Qualification also starts at the same time. However, India doesn't have any competitor in this event. The men's section, however commences at 10 AM local time (6:30 AM IST) where we will have Mairaj and Angad trying to put up a good score ahead of next day's qualification round.

The action, however, doesn't end there as Deepak and Divyansh will go on to face a tough field in 10m air rifle at 1 PM local time (9:30 AM IST).

PREVIEW

Rifle/Pistol events

The Indian shooting team will hope for a better outing in the Tokyo Olympics today, a day after a disappointing start to its campaign.

The onus will be on Manu Bhaker, Yashaswini Singh Deswal in women's 10m air pistol, and the men's 10m air rifle duo of Divyansh Singh Panwar and Deepak Kumar, to ensure that the country achieves success on the second day of competition.

The Indian shooting team will make four more attempts at opening its medal count at the Games.

In the sport's first competition day, Indian shooters endured multiple heartbreaks with the biggest disappointment being Saurabh Chaudhary's failure to win a medal after topping the qualifications.

While Chaudhary finished seventh in the finals of men's 10m air pistol, his roommate Abhishek Verma settled for 17th position in the qualifications.

In the women's 10m air rifle, both Elavenil Valarivan and Apurvi Chandela could not clear the qualifying hurdle, settling for the 16th and 36th place respectively.

Up next, Manu and Yashaswini will line up in the women's 10m air pistol qualifiers in the morning session, while in the afternoon, Deepak and Divyansh will compete in the men's 10m air rifle event.

The women will again be looking to break the 580 mark at the bare minimum, to strengthen their claims for a finals spot. The top eight will qualify from the 53-woman field after 60 shots are fired in 75 minutes.

The men's 10m air rifle competition has attracted 47 participants and will also have a 60-shot qualification round, but with decimal scoring in place, the comfort score is around 630 to ensure a finals berth.

Yashaswini and Manu go into the competition as world number one and two, respectively, while Divyansh is world number two in men's 10m air rifle, even as his senior compatriot, Deepak Kumar, ranks 11th.

Shotgun disciplines

Action will also begin for the shotgun disciplines as India's Mairaj Ahmad Khan and Angad Vir Singh Bajwa attempt to qualify for the medal rounds of the men's skeet competition.

Sunday will be day one of qualifying in men's skeet which will have three of the five 25-shot rounds being played through the day.

The last two rounds, before the top six make it to the 60-shot final, will be held on Monday.

Mairaj, into his second Olympic Games and debutant Angad, have been training in Italy in the build-up to the Games. It is a compact but strong Olympic field of 30 and the two will have their task cut out to make it to the medal round.

In the skeet event, clay targets are thrown in a particular order for each of the eight shooting stations set on a semi-circular field from two strategically placed throwing machines -- ''High House'' and ''Low House''.

A total of 25 such targets are thrown in one series.

In world-class events such as the Olympics, a score of 123 or 124 out of 125 in qualifying often leads to a shoot-off to separate the top six.

Mairaj has a best of 122 and Angad 121. They will have to shoot extraordinarily well to have a decent shot at a medal.
