Satish Kumar failed to impress at the 2015 AIBA World Championship.

The final day of the preliminary rounds of the 2015 AIBA World Championship, on Friday, wasn’t a memorable one for India as their 91 kg boxer Satish Kumar went down to Turkey’s Ali Eren Demirezen 3-0.

Contesting in the final bout of the day, Satish, an Asian Games bronze medallist, found it difficult to match his Turkish opponent. The defeat ended Satish’s hopes of progressing further in the tournament.

Eighty boxers have qualified for the quarterfinals that will begin today. Nine Cubans along with seven Azerbaijanis and seven Uzbekistanis have made it to the next round.

In the 69 kg category, former Junior World Champion Eumir Marcial advanced to the quarters with a hard-fought 2-1 win against Spain’s Youba Sissokho. The crowd was behind Eumir, a Filipino, who won the junior world welterweight championship in 2011 at the age of 19.

Eumir, who faces World No. 1 Yeleussinov Daniyar in the next round, said of his meeting with compatriot Manny Pacquiao, “It was amazing to meet Manny. He said that I should go out there and dominate my opponent so that the judges can see my aggression.”

In the 81kg light division, it was a disappointment for the hosts (Qatar) as local boxer Hakan Murst Nuraydin bowed out of the championships, going down 3-0 to Belarusian fighter Mihail Dauhaliavets.

India’s Shiva Thapa (56 kg) and Vikas Krishan (75 kg) will be competing in the quarterfinals today, taking on Erseker Hakan and Abdin Hosam, respectively.
