Varsha Varman edged past Soumya Gupta 38-37 to clinch the women’s trap gold in the 62nd National Shotgun Championship at the JDA Range on Monday.
After qualifying in the second place with 114, two points behind Manisha Keer, Varsha handled the single-barrel final with competence to emerge victorious. It was a brave effort by Varsha in the qualification stage earlier as she bounced back from a bad second
round of 19, with scores of 24, 23 and 24.
It was a second silver for Soumya Gupta who had won the mixed team silver with Fahad Sultan.
While Olympian Shagun Chowdhary scraped through to the bronze medal ahead of Manisha Keer. Overnight leader Snehlata Rajawat, who had 71 out of 75, was placed fifth ahead of Kirti Gupta. Snehlata did well to make the final after a below par fourth round of 19.
Rajeshwari Kumari (108), World Cup silver medallist Seema Tomar (107), Commonwealth Games double trap champion Shreyasi Singh (105) placed ninth to 11th in that order.
Nivetha Nenthirasigamani of Tamil Nadu, who had won the mixed bronze with Prithviraj Tondaiman, could muster only 102 and was placed 16th.
In the junior women’s final, Soumya Gupta prevailed 38-37 over Aadya Tripathi. Manisha Keer settled for the bronze this time, ahead of Kirti Gupta, Bhavna Chaudhary and Mahima Vishwakarma.
