Eetee Maheta did her confidence a world of good as she beat fourth seed Dhruthi Venugopal 4-6, 6-0, 6-4 in the pre-quarterfinals of the $10,000 ITF women’s tennis tournament at the VIP’s Club courts on Wednesday.
The 20-year-old Eetee recovered from being down 2-4 in the decider to set up a quarterfinal against the Taipei qualifier Hsin-Yuan Shih.
The 15-year-old Taipei girl, the only foreign challenger in the draw, making the quarterfinals for the second week in a row as a qualifier, had beaten eighth seed Nidhi Chilumula 6-1, 7-6(5). Nidhi missed her chances in the second set when she led 3-0 and 5-3. Even in the eventual tie-break, Nidhi led 4-0 before losing seven of the next eight points, including two through double faults.
In the three other quarters of the draw, the seeded players pulled through into the quarterfinals, with top seed Rishika Sunkara set to face Sri Vaishnavi Peddi Reddy, Sharrmadaa Baluu meeting Natasha Palha and Prarthana Thombare setting up an interesting clash against four-time national champion Prerna Bhambri, who had won a double crown last week in Lucknow.
In the doubles also, the top four seeds made the semifinals, with second seeds Nidhi and Dhruthi ready to challenge the champions of last week Prerna and Rishika.
Kyra Shroff beat Chiraz Bechri of Tunisia 6-1, 6-4 in the first round of the $10,000 ITF women’s tennis tournament in El Kantaoui, Tunisia, on Wednesday.
In the $10,000 ITF men’s Futures tournament in Turkey, qualifier Haadin Bava gave a good fight to second seed Cem Ilkel of Turkey, before being beaten 6-4, 7-5 in the first round.
