Juan Martin del Potro has posted a video on his Twitter handle of him walking out of a hospital on crutches, after undergoing surgery on his right kneecap over the weekend in Barcelona.
It's feared that the recurrence of the same injury he suffered in the latter part of 2018 could rule him out of the Tour for the rest of 2019, while Del Potro himself fears it could end his career.
The big-hitting Argentine suffered the injury during his Queen's Club Championships first-round match against Denis Shapovalov last Wednesday. Del Potro progressed to the second round, but underwent scans after noticing swelling and pain in his right knee.
Further tests revealed that Del Potro had fractured his right kneecap again. He suffered the same injury at the Shanghai Open in October last year, forcing him to miss the season-ending ATP finals.
This is not the first major injury that Del Potro has had in his career. He has time and again suffered wrist injuries and undergone surgeries, which have forced him to alter his game and most significantly drop the double-handed backhand.
