Archery trials: Tarundeep, Deepika shine

Tarundeep Rai and Deepika Kumari emerged as the best archers in the recurve selection trials at the KIIT University ground on Friday.

Tarundeep Rai and Deepika Kumari emerged as the best archers in the recurve selection trials at the KIIT University ground here on Friday.

Tarundeep, who topped the ranking round, was second in the round robin one-on-one competition among top 12 and gathered 11.5 overall points to push Atanu Das (11), the best in round robin, to the second place. Both won nine of their 12 matches.

National champion Pravin Jadhav (9.5) was third even after managing five victories.

Deepika, who had taken the number one slot in the ranking round, also won nine matches to claim the top place in round robin stage. She picked up 12 points overall.

L. Bombaya Devi (9.5) and Komalika Bari (8), who tasted success in six contests apiece, were second and third respectively.

The top four will compete in World Cup I and III, while the bottom four will participate in World Cup II. The top three will take part in the World championships, which is an Olympic qualification event.
