Moovendran advanced to the semis after beating Kartik of Karnataka 3-2.

Rookie Moovendran M. gave a clinical performance to edge past Kartik in a keenly-fought 60kg quarterfinal bout and ensure a podium finish in the National boxing championships at the Army Sports Institute here on Wednesday.

Moovendran of Tamil Nadu presented his technically sound game to beat JSW-backed Kartik of Karnataka 3-2 and book a berth in the semifinals.

Coming from a humble background, Moovendran, who honed his skills at SDAT Sports Hostel in Chennai, kept his cool despite Kartik's fierce attack.

The 20-year-old lanky southpaw employed a watchful strategy to frustrate his opponent and scored through accurate punches from long range.

“I am very happy to have landed a medal in my first appearance in the elite Nationals,” said Moovendran, a National junior bronze medallist who took up boxing after getting inspired by international boxer Devananda.

It was a day of brave shows from several lesser known boxers who went down fighting to better competitors.

Services boxer Deepak used his quick combinations to tame Haryana's Vinod Tanwar, who made an impression with his fine left punches, in a 49kg bout. Deepak's fine game sense and well thought-out plan helped him notch up a 5-0 victory.

Prabhat of Madhya Pradesh gave international Ankush Dahiya of Railways a run for his money before bowing out with 1-4 verdict in another 60kg contest.

Rajpinder Singh of Punjab mixed his well-planned strategy with gamesmanship to match up to World championships bronze medallist and Railways pugilist Gaurav Bidhuri. The latter won the 56kg bout 5-0.

Commonwealth Games' medallist Manish Kaushik of Services had a tough time against Sunil Chauhan of Uttar Pradesh. The home boxer received a cut above his right eye but managed to last in the 60kg battle to win it 5-0.
