South Africa's convener of selectors, Linda Zondi, has said Faf du Plessis will hand the Test captaincy back to AB de Villiers when the latter returns from injury.
Du Plessis has been hailed for his leadership on South Africa's ongoing tour of Australia, after his side won the first two Tests to seal a series victory with a match to spare.
The Proteas' impressive performances have led to suggestions Du Plessis could continue as skipper once De Villiers recovers from an elbow problem.
However, Zondi said: "At the moment it's clear to us that Faf is stand-in captain and AB is the current captain when he comes back, looking at his fitness and so on."
Zondi added: "We nominated Faf to be a stand-in captain and he has done a very good job.
"It just gives us more options. And we have other guys. We are quite excited about how Faf has shown leadership but we are not going to be carried away."
De Villiers, who has been sidelined since July, could return for a home series against Sri Lanka that starts next month.
"We will be guided by the medical team in terms of where he is and in terms of match fitness," explained Zondi.
"He has been away for five months - a long time. For starters, he has to be match fit. We will take it from there."
