[END OF DAY'S PLAY]

Until tomorrow, this is Shivansh Gupta bidding bye. CIAO!

That's all for today. Thank you so much for joining me today.

Recap of the third session of the day:

This was an exciting session. Virat Kohli started off with becoming the first batsman to score seven double hundreds  and later brought up his maiden 250.

At the other was Jadeja, who played started expressing himself after Tea. There was a passage of play where the duo scored more eight runs from over.

Kohli was caught by Faf du Plessis off Muthusamy, but the decision was reversed once he was found guilty of overstepping.

Jadeja fell for 91 and the host, eventually, declared on 601/5. The two put on 235 runs for the fifth wicket.

Umesh Yadav came out with all guns blazing and sent Aiden Markram back in the first over the innings. In his second over, he dismissed Dean Elgar.

To worsen Proteas' woes, Mohammad Shami removed Bavuma on his first delivery of the spell, forcing Faf to send nighthwathman Nortje in.

Theunis de Bruyn and Nortje saw South Africa to 36/3 in 15 overs. South Africa still trails by 565.

---------------------END OF SESSION 3, DAY 2------------------

SOUTH AFRICA 36/3 | 5:05 PM

Overs-15

 de Bruyn 20(38), Nortje 2(22)

STUMPS- Nortje negotiates the last ball safely and umpires call it a day. Another session that belonged the Indians. In fact, all six have so far. Umesh Yadav rocked the visitor with early strikes before Shami sent Bavuma packing. Theunins de Bruyn (not-out on 20 off 38) and nightwatchman Nortje (not-out on 2 off 22) have done well to make sure South Africa didn't lose anymore wickets.  Proteas still trail by 565 runs.

SOUTH AFRICA 33/3 | 4:40 PM

Overs-10

 de Bruyn 19(25), Nortje 0(5)

NORTJE SURVIVES! GOOD REVIEW! Shami gets the last ball of the over to sharp risely and Nortje tries to see it off by sticking his bat out. The bals deflects off him and is caught-behind. Umpires give it out. The batsman reviews it immediately and rightly so because the ball had clipped off his arm

NEW BATSMAN- ANRICH NORTJE COMES TO THE CREASE.

BAVUMA 8(15, 1x4) ct Saha b Shami

APPEAL FOR CAUGHT-BEHIND AND REVIEW TAKEN AFTER NOT-OUT GIVEN!!! He beats Temba Bavuma with vicious delivery outside off. India appeals for a caught-behind. Not-out given first initially. Saha and the slip cordon was confident. Kohli takes the review and reply shows that there was  a faint edge. South Africa in deep waters here.

CHANGE IN BOWLING: MOHAMMAD SHAMI REPLACES UMESH YADAV.

Overs-4

NEW BATSMAN IN- TEMBA BAVUMA JOINS de BRUYN

ELGAR 6 (13, 1X4) b Yadav

YADAV WITH A SECOND AND BOTH OPENERS ARE BACK IN THE PAVILION! Elgar was caught in two minds there, whether to leave the ball or play at it. In the end, he ends up nicking the ball onto his own pads and it trickles down to dislodge the bails. The ball was pitched just short of good length in the channel of uncertainty. Proteas off to a disastrous start!

SOUTH AFRICA 4/1 | 4:00 PM

Overs- 2

Elgar 2(6), de Bruyn 2(4)

He gets off the mark with a brace in the region between mid-wicket and long-on.

NEW BATSMAN IN- THEUNIS de BRUYN JOINS ELGAR IN THE MIDDLE

MARKRAM 0 (2) lbw Yadav

APPEAL FOR LBW AND GIVEN!!! Yadav strikes on the second ball of his spell. TIRED LEGS FROM MARKRAM! The ball swings in sharply and rams into the front pad. Markram was late on the push and with no feet movement, the ball was destined to hit the leg stump. He doesn't even review the call and walks right back.

OPENING THE BOWLING WITH ISHANT IS UMESH YADAV with three slips and a gully.

SOUTH AFRICA 2/1 | 3:55 PM

Overs- 1

Elgar 2(6), Markram 0 (0)

ISHANT SHARMA TO OPEN THE BOWLING with three slips and a gully.

AJIKNYA RAHANE IS THE STAND-IN CAPTAIN TILL KOHLI RETURNS TO THE FIELD

----------------------START OF SESSION 3, DAY 2------------------

Our reporter Shayan Acharya  recaps the second session of the day:

Virat Kohli remained unbeaten on 194 as India reached 473-4 at tea on the second day of the second Test against South Africa. He was accompanied by Ravindra Jadeja, who was batting on 25 and the duo had put together a 97-run partnership for the fifth wicket.

Playing in his 50th Test as captain, Kohli also went past late Sir Donald Bradman’s record of most number of 150-plus scores as a skipper. While the Australian legend had surpassed the 150 run-mark on eight occasions, Kohli now has nine in his kitty.

Resuming at 356-3 after lunch, India lost Ajinkya Rahane for 59 as he was dismissed by Keshav Maharaj. Kohli and Rahane forged a 178-run partnership for the fourth wicket. This, incidentally, is also the highest fourth-wicket partnership for India against South Africa. The previous highest was 145 by Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid in Johannesburg in the 1996-97 series.

Overs- 126.0

 KOHLI 151(241), Jadeja 4(14)

150 UP FOR VIRAT KOHLI! He tries to slash an away-turner through covers from Maharaj but ends up edging it. Faf, in the first slip, could barely react as the ball stormed past him to the fence. Earlier in the over,  Kohli top-edged a ball that surprisingly stayed low.

Overs- 123.0

 KOHLI 131(223), Jadeja 4(14)

AS EASY AS YOU LIKE! Strong wrists of Kohli coming into play. Rabada, who is bowling his 29th over, drags one straight on Kohli's pads and that's one region where he gets the better of the bowlers almost every single time. Kohli obliges and whips it through the mid-wicket region for a boundary.

INDIA 375/4 | 12:38 PM

Overs- 118.0

 KOHLI 125(205), Jadeja 1(2)

NEW BATSMAN IN - RAVINDRA JADEJA

RAHANE 59 (168, 8X4) ct de Kock b Maharaj

Keshav Maharaj is claims his first scalp in his 33rd over. Pitched the ball up and the ball did just enough to turn away from the blade and graze the edge. A good catch from de Kock. THIS IS ALSO KESHAV'S 100 TEST WICKET.

RAHANE DEPARTS AND PROTEAS FINALLY GET THE BREAKTHROUGH!

INDIA 375/3 | 12:28 PM

Overs- 117.0

 KOHLI 121(202), Rahane 59(167)

KOHLI CLEARLY ON TOP IN THIS BATTLE! The much-anticipated showdown between Kohli and Rabada this morning is turning out to be a one-sided domination affair as Kohli hits Rabada for a third boundary in two overs. This time, a check-drive through the extra-cover region.

INDIA 367/3 | 12:20 PM

Overs- 115.0

 KOHLI 115(194), Rahane 58(162)

GORGEOUS! ELEGANT! CLASSY! You can use as many adjectives as you want to describe the beauty that his drives are oozing today. Rabada hit for two boundaries in the same over as he paid the price for pitching it too close to the batsman. Kohli followed up an on-drive with another on-drive. The full face of the bat and off the middle.

INDIA 359/3 | 12:15 PM

Overs- 114.0

 KOHLI 107(188), Rahane 58(162)

Muthusamy to Kohli and we are off!

We are back with the afternoon session of the second day. Kohli and Rahane take guard as Proteas desperately seek a breakthrough.

----------------------START OF SESSION 2, DAY 2------------------

Latest on Virat Kohli's century in Pune from our reporter Shayan Acharya makes for a great lunch-time read. While players the take lunch, you can rejuvenate yourselves with this story on Kohli's first Test century in 2019.

Our reporter Shayan Acharya  recaps the first session of the day:

It was another Test, another century for Virat Kohli. The India captain played an unbeaten knock of 104 as the side reached 356-3 at lunch on the second day of the second Test against South Africa.

Playing in his 50 Test as the captain of India, Kohli played at ease against South African pacers -- Vernon Philander and Kagiso Rabada -- who failed to make an impact. While Kohli kept the ball rolling, Ajinkya Rahane held fort at the other end, with his unbeaten knock of 58. And that led to the duo adding 158 runs for the fourth wicket and pushing the opponents to the wall.

After incessant rains overnight, there were speculations that the wicket might aid the quicks early on, but with Kohli and Rahane holding fort, it was a smooth sailing for India.

----------------------END OF SESSION 1, DAY 2------------------

INDIA 356/3 | 11:32 AM

Overs- 113.0

 KOHLI 104(183), Rahane 58(161)

Rahane lunges forward to defend a flighted delivery from Aiden Markram and THATS LUNCH! South Africa go for the first break of the day wicketless as Kohli and Rahane blunt the visitors. The duo added 83 runs in this session.

INDIA 348/3 | 11:24 AM

Overs- 111.0

 KOHLI 102(178), Rahane 52(154)

150-RUN PARTNERSHIP! THE RUNS SIMPLY KEEP COMING! This is the highest 4th wicket for India vs South Africa. The duo surpasses the previous best of 145 by Dravid and Ganguly.

INDIA 345/3 | 11:18 AM

Overs- 109.0

 KOHLI 101(175), Rahane 50(145)

CENTURY FOR KOHLI! 26TH OF HIS CAREER AND 1ST OF THE YEAR! He must be mighty relieved and pleased with this one. No animated celebrations just a warm embrace from Rahane and a show of helmet and bat to the crowd and dressing room with arms raised. He got there in style. Elegant straightdrive. Full show of the bat and a beautiful boundary with the minimum of fuss.

INDIA 326/3 | 11:06 AM

Overs- 106.0

 KOHLI 95(161), Rahane 50(141)

FIFTY FOR RAHANE! He has taken his time, 141 balls at a strike-rate of 35.46 to be exact, but he will take it. He has come out on day two with a positive mindset after a nervy start yesterday and with Kohli five runs away from his hundred, this partnership is only getting stronger.

INDIA 326/3 | 10:49 AM

Overs- 102.0

 KOHLI 91(151), Rahane 41(127)

KOHLI MOVES INTO THE 90s. Nortje's balll outside of off is edge by Kohli, who once again plays it with a soft bottom hand to ensure that the ball doesn't carry to the wicketkeeper. Four more. Rahane has also moved into the 40s.

INDIA 320/3 | 10:45 AM

Overs- 101.0

 KOHLI 86(148), Rahane 40(124)

SHOUT FOR LBW, UMPIRES GIVES IT NOT-OUT AND FAF TAKES THE REVIEW! The only question was whether the ball was pitching outside leg. The reply shows that the impact was well within the line of the stumps but the ball had pitched just outside the leg stump line.  Maharaj was almost there.

CHANGE IN BOLWING- KESHAV MAHARAJ IS INTO THE ATTACK

INDIA 320/3 | 10:43 AM

Overs- 100.0

 KOHLI 86(148), Rahane 40(118)

RAHANE FEELING A LOT AT HOME NOW! Nortje pays the price of pitching it short and wide of off-stump. Rahane stands tall and cuts it late down the third man area for his seventh boundary. 100 overs up.

INDIA 314/3 | 10:32 AM

Overs- 99.0

 KOHLI 85(144), Rahane 35(116)

PROTEAS STILL WICKETLESS AFTER THE FIRST HOUR OF THE DAY! Despite a few edges falling short and the ball beating the bat on multiple occasions, South Africa is still seeking its first breakthrough on day 2.

Rahane is slowly beginning to up the ante. He struck two cracking boundaries a while back. A flick off his pads when Rabada tossed it up and the second one was cut hard through point off Nortje's bowling.

INDIA 298/3 | 10:19 AM

Overs- 96.0

 KOHLI 79(139), Rahane 26(102)

100 partnership! Kohli and Rahane motoring along nicely at the moment. The South African bowlers have bowled well so far, with quite a few edges falling just short of the fielders in the cordon. The two batsmen have added 100 for the fourth wicket.

INDIA 291/3 | 10:04 AM

Overs- 93.0

 KOHLI 74(127), Rahane 24(96)

EDGED AND SAFE AGAIN! This time, it's Rahane who survives a scare. Every time Philander has drawn the batsman forward, he has asked questions. The ball was shaping away and Rahane pokes at it. The ball flies off the edge and and dies down on the way to the boundary past a diving gully fielder.

DOWN THE GROUND FOR FOUR! CLASSY! Rabada pitched up the last ball of the over and Kohli met it with the middle of his bat. Great balance, head over the ball and didn't try to hit it too hard.

INDIA 281/3 | 9:56 AM

Overs- 91.0

 KOHLI 69(118), Rahane 19(93)

So far, so good from the South African pacers. Tight line and good length is what just the doctor ordered. They haven't let either batsman play their shots freely.

INDIA 279/3 | 9:48 AM

Overs- 89.0

 KOHLI 69(117), Rahane 18(82)

WHAT  A GREAT OVER FROM PHILANDER! Each and every ball, he ran in hard and pitched it either in the fourth line stump or in the channel of uncertainty. On the last ball, he finally gets Virat to edge one, but due to lack of pace, the ball doesn't carry to a diving Quinton de Kock and runs away for four.

INDIA 275/3 | 9:39 AM

Overs- 87.0

 KOHLI 64(106), Rahane 18(81)

He pitches in on the good length and Kohli tries to push it with hard hands and the ball finds the inside edge of his bat as well. The ball runs down to fine leg as Kohli gets off the mark on day 2.  Rahane sees the rest of the over off comfortably.

CHANGE IN BOWLING: PHILANDER INTO THE ATTACK

INDIA 274/3 | 9:35 AM

Overs- 86.0

 KOHLI 63(105), Rahane 18(76)

STARTS WITH A BEAUTY! The ball angling in sharply, not the quickest mind you, but finds the inside of the bat. He follows it up with an outswinger and had Rahane interested for a second. The only run in the over coming from a no ball.

AND HERE WE GO! BALL ONE OF DAY TWO.

RABADA TO RAHANE. UMPIRE SIGNAL PLAYS.

RABADA IS WITH THE BALL IN HAND AS HE WILL BE COMPLETING HIS OVER THAT WAS DISRUPTED BY POOR LIGHT YESTERDAY.

VIRAT KOHLI, NOT-OUT ON 63, WALKS OUT WITH RAHANE WHO IS BATTING ON 18 TO RESUME PROCEEDINGS ON DAY 2.

----------------------START OF SESSION 1, DAY 2------------------

Pitch Report of Day 2 from Sunil Gavaskar: "The pitch will play better today. It will be dry.  A few spots can be seen because of the dampness yesterday due of rain. South Africa, in order to get back into the game, needs to get the line and length right. In line with the off stump, channel of uncertainity. Short of good length and mix it up with an odd short ball. The second news ball is still hard, so it they should make the most of it."

RECAP OF DAY 1:

Today, the focus will be on the Kohli vs Rabada battle. Yesterday, Rabada had a go at Pujara with the some sledging, to which the latter commented saying that he didn't let that disturb his focus. Some words were exchanged between Kohli and Rabada during the World Cup and expect fireworks today too.

Talking about yesterday, Rabada and Philander started really well and their hardwork was rewarded when Rabada sent Rohit packing. Once the first hour was done and dusted, Agarwal started scoring more freely.

Pujara also opened his arms in the second session and the two brought up their fifties on the way to a brilliant 138-run partnership. Rabada was reintroduced into the attack and he delivered by dismissing Pujara at the stroke of tea.

Though all three sessions belonged to India yesterday, the most dominating one was the third. Agarwal's back-to-back sixes followed by a single to get to his second hundred. Once again, it Rabada repaid his skipper's faith by sending the centurion back to the pavilion.

Once a tentative Rahane joined Kohli at the crease, the latter decided to take command and ended the day 37 runs of his century at 63. He will look to get to the three-figure mark today.

WEATHER UPDATE- 8:35 AM

" The weather has improved a bit. Looks like we might start on time."

WEATHER UPDATE- 8:35 AM

Our reporter  Shayan Acharya gives the us weather update from Pune: "It's cloudy with a bit of rain. High chances of a delayed start."

DAY ONE REPORT

Much before the second Test between India and South Africa got underway at the MCA International Stadium, the cricketing fraternity was busy debating how the surface would behave.

With the region witnessing incessant rains over the fortnight, even the ground staff weren’t too convinced whether the pitch will aid the batters or the pacers. The moisture in the pitch was expected to be encouraging enough for the fast bowlers.

Day 1: As it Happened

But when the ball finally got rolling, Mayank Agarwal dished out a solid knock of 108 to make sure India’s batsmen had the upper hand. Riding on his flawless knock, the host ended Day 1 on a strong 273-3.

Rohit falls early

With the expectations rising high after his power-packed double century against the Proteas in the first Test in Vizag, the 28-year-old opening batsman knew it would be a challenging task to tackle the Kagiso Rabada-Vernon Philander duo in a supposedly seam-friendly track.

But that had very little impact on the young gun who relied on his natural game. Even though he looked jittery in the first hour of the play — he was tested by the short ball — Mayank did not let it slip.

READ: It’s all sunny in Mayank’s la-la land!

The slow but steady approach not only helped him spread wings, but also allowed India to take control of the game despite losing Rohit Sharma early in the innings.

After back-to-back tons in the first Test, Rohit failed to keep the momentum going in the second and was caught behind by Quinton de Kock off Rabada for just fourteen.

Pujara holds fort

With Rohit departing early, the onus was on Mayank and Cheteshwar Pujara. And on the expected lines, the two took to the South African bowlers to task.

The two stitched a 138-run partnership for the second wicket, with Pujara scoring 58. With forecasts of rain, it was important for India to stay on course and the seasoned Pujara allowed his younger team-mate to fly, while holding fort at the other end. Pujara looked set for a longer innings, but was caught behind by Faf du Plessis for 58 off Rabada.

Ten overs after his exit, Agarwal was caught by du Plessis at the slips, again off Rabada. On a day when the South African bowling unit looked hapless, Rabada was the only one to enjoy success as he claimed all the three wickets. While Philander did manage to create a few chances, it turned out to be a disappointing day for debutant Anrich Nortje.

The day solely belonged to India as captain Virat Kohli (batting on 63) and Ajinkya Rahane (18*) combined for an unbroken 75-run partnership for the fourth wicket on Thursday.

After a rather disappointing outing in the first Test, where he managed to score 20 and 31, it was an opportunity for Kohli to bounce back in his 50th Test as a skipper: he looked on course for a big score.

Bad light forced the umpires to call off the day early.
