Former Brazil football president Marin given life ban by FIFA

Jose Maria Marin was given a four-year jail term in 2018 and FIFA has confirmed the former CBF head has been banned from football for life.

Former Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) president Jose Maria Marin has been banned for life from all football activities by FIFA.

In 2018, Marin was sentenced to four years in prison for racketeering and corruption offences, becoming the first person to be imprisoned as the result of the US investigation into corruption at world football's governing body.

He was found to have taken bribes in exchange for the media and marketing rights to various tournaments, including the Copa America.

And FIFA confirmed on Monday an investigation by the adjudicatory chamber of the independent Ethics Committee had concluded Marin was guilty of bribery in violation of the FIFA Code of Ethics.

As such, FIFA said he has been banned "for life from all football-related activities (administrative, sports or any other) at both national and international level".

Marin, who has been informed of FIFA's decision, has also been ordered to pay a CHF 1million fine (£760,000).
