Argentina defender Javier Mascherano overtook former defender Albiceleste Javier Zanetti as the country's most capped player during his 144th appearance in a 1-1 draw against Iceland during the group D opener in the FIFA World Cup 2018.
Mascherano has represented a host of football clubs, among them Liverpool, Barcelona and West Ham. The 34-year-old made his World Cup debut in Germany in 2006.
His 100th cap came during the 2014 World Cup final which Argentina lost 0-1 to Germany. He also holds the distinction of featuring in the Argentinian side that won the gold at the 2004 Athens Olympics.
