Chhetri breaks ISL goalscoring record for Indian player

Bengaluru FC captain Sunil Chhetri scored his eighth goal of the Indian Super League campaign on Friday to break the record for most number of goals scored by an Indian player in a season.

Bengaluru FC's Sunil Chhetri broke the Indian Super League record for most number of goals in a season for an Indian player on Friday. 

In Bengaluru's 2-1 win over NorthEast United at the Kanteerava Stadium, Chhetri scored the match winning goal to take his season's account to eight goals and in the process, bettered his previous best of seven goals in the 2015 season with Mumbai City FC.

The 33-year-old is currently placed third in the top goalscorers in the ongoing ISL season behind FC Goa's Ferran Corominas (10) and club teammate Miku (9). 

Kerala Blasters' Iain Hume is the all-time top goal scorer in the competition with 27 goals. Chhetri comes in fifth on th all-time list behind Hume, Colombian Stiven Mendoza, India's Jeje Lalpekhlua and Brazilian Marcelinho with 15 strikes.
