MATCH REPORT| ISL 2019-20: NorthEast United, Mumbai City share spoils in Guwahati

NorthEast United FC could have gone on top of the Indian Super League (ISL) 2019-20 table with a win against Mumbai City FC today. However, it still moves to fourth above FC Goa in the standings with this draw. Mumbai, on the other hand, continues to have the upper hand over NorthEast in Guwathi.

FULL TIME: NORTHEAST UNITED 2 - 2 MUMBAI CITY FC.

AND THE GAME IS DONE AND DUSTED!!!

90+2' CORNER FOR MUMBAI! One final chance maybe? Larbi will take it as usual. However, NorthEast centre-back Komorski heads it away. The clearance goes to the sub Bipin Singh who fires a shot way off the target.

90' SUBSTITUTION! Manager Robert Jarni makes NorthEast's final change of the night as Redeem Tlang makes way for Nikhil Kadam. Three minutes to be added on.

88' NorthEast player Rakesh Pradhan dribbles past a number of Mumbai players and sends the ball across wanting to find Barreiro but keeper Amrinder Singh collects it pretty easily.

86' CORNER FOR MUMBAI! Larbi will take it and it's a foul. MCFC's centre-backs Golui and Pratik kind of sandwiched Asamoah Gyan in an attempt to score for their side.

83' SUBSTITUTION! Bipin Singh comes in for Moudou Sougou as Jorge Costa wants his Mumbai side to go for the kill against NorthEast. A slight hamstring niggle for Sougou here.

82' CHANCE FOR NORTHEAST!! Redeem Tlang puts in a decent ball to Triadis, who goes for glory, from the right flank. But the ball is deflected of a Mumbai defender and it goes past Gyan and Barreiro, who were just millimetres away from the ball. The NorthEast camp looks dejected after that chance went by.

80' FOUL!!! Mumbai's Subhasish Bose takes down NorthEast's Redeem Tlang. It was a very lazy challenge. Free-kick from a decent spot.

79' CORNER FOR NORTHEAST! Barreiro runs forward with the ball but Pratik Chaudhari makes a hard-fought clearance. Triadis takes the corner kick. He goes for the near post where his skipper Leudo attempts a back heel. But the ball goes out.

76' SUBSTITUTION! Mumbai's first of the game. Serge Kevyn is brought in by Jorge Costa as Paulo Machado makes his way out to the dugout.

74' CLOSE!!! Subhashish Bose with a good cross from the left flank. Sougou connects with a good header and find Chermiti, who could have completed his hat-trick right now. However, the final shot goes off target. A big relief for NorthEast United here against Mumbai City.

71' GOOD CHANCE!!! Barreiro with a beautiful cross in but there was no one to slot it home. However, Mumbai fails to clear the ball away properly as Gyan receives the ball in the box but his shot at a half-turn position is directed straight at Amrinder Singh.

68' PENALTY??!!! NO NOTHING GIVEN AGAIN! Mumbai players are absolutely furious. NorthEast defender Nim Dorjee put in a foot as Diego Carlos brought the ball into the penalty box. But did Diego go down before the tackle? Looks so.

65' CORNER FOR MUMBAI!! Larbi with a precise pass to Diego Carlos whose shot was deflected away by Komorski. Larbi takes the corner again. However, his ball is easily cleared away.

63' SUBSTITUTIONS!!! Maximilliano Barreiro replaces Chaves and Lalthathanga comes in for Milan Singh.

60' CORNER FOR MUMBAI! Larbi takes it and it is directed towards the near post. Pratik Chaudhari gets a head to it but his shot is way off target.

56' NorthEast United's Reagan Singh sends a ball to the middle but it was easily cleared away Mumbai City's Sarthak Golui. The visitor has had 57 per cent of the possession so far. The home team started the game well but has been on the back foot for a while now.

54' Mato Grgic and Serge Kevyn are warming up on the sidelines. We might see a Mumbai City FC change soon as Jorge Costa continues being animated.

50' TEMPERS FLARE AS THE REFEREE SHOWS THE YELLOW CARD TO A COUPLE OF PLAYERS! Milan Singh was brought down by Larbi and Komorski didn't like it a bit. He had a heated argument with Larbi and Sougou and Pradhan joined them unnecessarily. Chermiti was involved too. In the end, Sougou and Chermiti are booked.

48' FOUL!! NorthEast skipper Jose Leudo brings down the man with brace Amine Chermiti. QUICK FREE-KICK!! And Machado's shot is blocked by the defence.

THE FINAL 45 MINUTES ARE UNDERWAY!

Home team NorthEast United FC opened the scoring within ten minutes through Panagiotis Triadis who scored his first goal of ISL 2019-20. Exactly thirteen minutes later, Amine Chermiti equalised for Mumbai City FC after a brilliant team move. Few moments later, Chermiti bagged a brace to put his side ahead after a really silly mistake from Nim Dorjee. The visitor couldn't hold its lead as Asamoah Gyan scored yet again on home turf. He now has scored in three straight games in Guwathi. An exciting second-half ahead. Stay tuned!

AND IT IS HALF-TIME!!!

45 + 2' PENALTY CALLS HERE!! NOTHING GIVEN THOUGH! Subhashish Bose looked to have handled the ball as he jumped towards Redeem Tlang but the referee waves his hands.

45' GOOD TACKLE!!! Chaves and Redeem Tlang executed a perfect one-two as they went close to goal. However, a good interception from Sarthak Golui got rid of the danger. There's nothing to separate Mumbai and NorthEast right now. Two minutes to be added on!

42' GOAL!!!! GYAN DRAWS IT LEVEL FOR NORTHEAST!!!! Think I jinxed it! A Mumbai midfielder was dispossessed here. It was Machado. Asamoah Gyan got the ball in midfield and made an awesome run forward. He moved left, he moved right, he confused the defence and found the back of the net with an amazing shot from long.

39' Sougou is having a brilliant game on the right wing. He's been creating a number of chances. Meanwhile, Asamoah Gyan has been silent so far. He needs to find some form here. The Mumbai midfielders have found their feet in this game finally.

35' CORNER AND SAVE!!! Machado put in a corner and Mumbai might just have increased its lead. But NorthEast keeper Subhasish makes a good save to deny a Sougou header.

32' MUMBAI LEADS!!! CHERMITI WITH HIS SECOND!!!! It was a goal from absolutely nothing. Machado took the free-kick and it was a poor one. But Nim Dorjee missed a straightforward clearance and the ball fell to Chermiti who completed the formalities with a wonderful bicycle kick.

31' FOUL!! FREE-KICK FOR MUMBAI!!! Reagan Singh puts in a silly tackle on Diego Carlos. No card though. Paulo Machado and Mohamed Larbi are eager to take the kick.

28' Jorge Costa has been a very animated man near the Mumbai City dugout. He's constantly gesturing his players and also calling some of them to the sidelines when there is a stoppage in play to give them some insights.

25' VERY CLOSE!!! Asamoah Gyan received a cross from the right wing and he missed the header by a whisker. Mumbai's Pratik Chaudhari totally switched off there. NorthEast should have been 2-0 up but Gyan mistimed his run.

22' MUMBAI SCORES! CHERMITI EQUALISES!!!! A brilliant team move here. Larbi with the ball from midfield to Sougou who put in a brilliant well-timed low pass to his forward in the box. A tap-in for Amine Chermiti in the end brings MCFC back into the game.

20' FREE-KICK FOR MUMBAI! Larbi was brought down twice in a span of few seconds. Milan Singh committed the first foul and his NorthEast teammate Martin Chaves puts in a late challenge on the same player a few metres away.

16' SAVE! First proper attacking move from Mumbai. Rowllin Borges received a good pass from Machado and found Diego Carlos close to the penalty box. The forward fired the ball towards the left of NorthEast shotstopper Subhasish Roy who made a decent save.

13' Mumbai is losing the ball way too often in midfield. Rowllin Paulo Machado and Mohamed Larbi have struggled a bit today. Mumbai usually finds it difficult to make a comeback and today might be no different if its midfielders don't step up.

9' NORTHEAST SCORES!!!! TRIADIS WITH THE GOAL!!!! Sauvik's disastrous night continues. A poor clearance from him during a throw-in for the home team. The ball fell to Panagiotis Triadis who fled off the Mumbai defence to create a little space and opened the scoring.

8' HUGE OFFSIDE! Diego Carlos delayed the pass t Amine Chermiti by quite a bit and the centre forward is not happy at all.

5' NorthEast United is putting in a lot of men upfront. Mumbai is struggling a bit early on with mistimed tackles and passes. Rowllin Borges will be key for the side in midfield now.

3' Sauvik Chakrabarti misses yet another challenge. He takes out Subhasish Bose. The referee is having a word with. He might have been booked there. He should be careful.

AND THE MATCH IS UNDERWAY!!!

The home side NorthEast has two wins, two draws and a goal difference of +2 in four games so far. On the other hand, the visitor Mumbai has a solitary win, a draw, two losses and a goal difference of -3 in the same number of matches. O.P. Thakur is the referee for today's game.

MATCH PREVIEW:

NorthEast United FC will look to consolidate its position in the top half of the Indian Super League (ISL) table when it hosts Mumbai City FC at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium here on Wednesday evening.

The Highlanders have started this season in style as they are one of the three sides yet to face a defeat. Coach Robert Jarni seems to have struck a chord with the players and the results are evident with the club amassing eight points from four matches.

The Croatian would be pleased with the form of Redeem Tlang who has been exceptional with two goals to his name. Star striker Asamoah Gyan should make it into the matchday squad after picking up an injury before the international break.

There is a concern for Jarni defensively with central defender Kai Heerings suspended following his involvement in an on-field tussle against FC Goa early this month.

The Highlanders’ assistant coach Khalid Jamil was quick to point out that NorthEast would be playing to its strengths against a strong Mumbai outfit.

“Three points against Mumbai is very important. There are no injuries, but Kai (Heerings) will be missing. We will play like we usually do, and we are up against a very good team. So, we can’t take them lightly,” said Jamil.

Mumbai City will be pleased to welcome most of its players who were injured. Rowllin Borges, Modou Sougou and Mato Grgic are back in the squad which will give coach Jorge Costa some relief ahead of a must-win match.

The Islanders are in a very familiar situation currently. Though they started the season with four points from two away matches, they were defeated 4-2 by both Odisha FC and FC Goa at home.

They had the same points tally after four games last season and were reeling after a heavy defeat to FC Goa. But they went on a nine-game unbeaten run after that result and Costa will hope for a similar response.

“We have started exactly like last year. Last season in the first four games we had four points. We started well and then we had some problems. I have full confidence in my players. They know what they have to do, and I know what I have to do. We have an important game and we want to get three points,” Costa said.

“The conditions are perfect for my players to play. In Mumbai, it is too hot and too much humidity, but then again, we have to be prepared to play under all circumstances. But if you ask me I prefer to have this kind of weather,” he added.

Costa will have to ensure that his defence is on their toes, having conceded four goals each in their last two games.

The match will be live on Star Sports network and streaming on Hotstar, kick-off at 7.30 pm (IST).
