Manchester United beats Newcastle United 2-0 to lift the Carabao Cup title. It is the Red Devil’s first title in six years.
Save- United break on a counter and Bruno Fernandes is at the fulcrum of things. He carries the ball a long way inside the Newcastle box. He should have passed it to Sancho but ends up taking a shot, which is saved by Karius.

Man United sub: IN- Maguire OUT- Rashford.
Murphy takes a shot from distances and it is inches away from going inside the net as it swerved dangerously mid-flight. De Gea was a mere spectator as the ball fizzed past the post.
Booking: Casemiro sees a yellow card
A lapse in judgement by the Newcastle defence allows Sancho to get the ball. He plays a pass to Rashford on the left, who in turn, passes it back Sancho. Sancho sets up Wan Bissaka for the shot, whose effort is collected easily.
Booking: De Gea is shown a yellow card for time wasting. He took too long to take his goalkick.
Murphy drags the ball past Varane and lashes a shot at goal but blazes his effort over the bar.
Man United subs: IN- Sancho OUT- Antony.
Antony with a good chance to create a United attack on the counter as Varane’s clearing header finds the Brazilian on the right. He makes a long run but cannot keep the ball. He ends up conceding a foul in an effort to get the ball back.
United breaks in the counter as Bruno Fernandes carries the ball out from his own-half. He releases a pass for Rashford who had made a supporting run, but Trippier gets a touch to divert the ball away from Rashford.
Newcastle subs: IN- Murphy, Willock OUT- Saint-Maximin, Guimaraes
Saint-Maximin made a good run after a Dan Burn clearance. He would have got the ball but De Gea comes way off his line and clears the danger.
Sabitzer goes for a shot this time but is woefully off-target with his effort.
Shot- Rashford shoots low from the edge of the box, which is saved by Karius. The danger is not cleared and Shaw has the ball. He tries to find Antony on the right but his pass is cut off.
It looked like Guimaraes played a wonderful line-breaking pass to Trippier on the right. Trippier lashed a cross in, which was palmed away by De Gea. But, the flag goes up as Trippier was offside.
Man United subs: IN- Sabitzer, McTominay OUT- Fred, Weghorst.
Joelinton dispatches a venomous shot but Martinez is there to make the block.
It is Newcastle United, which is doing most of the attacking for now. Man United players are pegged back inside their own half.
Booking: Sven Botman is shown a yellow card for dissent.
Saint-Maximin showing his dancing feet yet again as he wins a corner for Newcastle. Wan Bissaka did well to block his shot.
The United midfield has done a good job of putting in a good defensive shift whever their team has been under pressure. The Magpies are trying their best to create an opening.
Saint-Maximin and Isak were not on the same wavelength as the former’s pass intended for the latter is misdirected and goes out for a United goalkick.
It is a bit messy inside the Man United final third. Newcastle trying desperately to create an opening but United is defending doggedly. Meanwhile, Bruno Guimaraes has injured himself after making a tackle.
Shaw’s first-time cross inside the box finds Weghorst who heads the ball towards goal. However, it was a weak effort and Karius collects comfortably.
Martinez displays some brave defending as he makes a clearance with a diving header. He was under pressure from Wilson. Newcastle players protest as they felt the ball had touched Martinez’s hands but the replay shows there was no handball.
Trippier shows his class by delivering an excellent ball inside the United box from a freekick. But Wan Bissaka is there to head the ball away.
Wan Bissaka with an excellent tackle to dispossess Saint-Maximin. He passes the ball to Weghorst, who looked to find a teammate inside the box. However, his pass is cut out and the attack ends.
Antony goes for his trademark curling shot with his left foot but the ball goes straight to Karius. The Brazilian looks disappointed at himself after that effort.
United attacks right from the second-half starting whistle. Rashford sets up a shot for Fred but it is a disappointing effort by the Brazilian.

Save: Weghorst’s catches a good shot from the edge of the box, which is saved well by Karius.
Weghorst does well to snatch the ball away in a dangerous area. He passes the ball to Bruno, who rolls the ball in Fred’s path. Fred goes for the shot but it is blocked.
Longstaff yelps as he goes down after a challenge from Fred. The replay shows nothing sinister so it might be a bad fall.
Five minutes given at the end of the first-half.
Close- Dan Burns comes might close to pulling one back for Newcastle. Trippier’s puts in a good ball inside the box, which finds Burn. Burn gets his head to it but it is not the best of contacts as the ball creeps wide of the post.
Newcastle United cannot be doubted for its work ethic. They are tow goals down but are playing with the same intensity.
GOOOOALLLL!! MANCHESTER UNITED HAS TWO!! RASHFORD FINDS THE NET!! Weghorst threads a wonderful pass to Rashford who times his run well. He shoots at Karius’ near post and the ball takes an unfortunate deflection and ends up inside the net. The goal is given to Rashford.
Booking: Fred is shown a yellow card.
Newcastle players shout for a penalty as Guimaraes goes down inside the box after a challenge from Weghorst. But the referee waves play on.
GOOOALLLLL!! MANCHESTER UNITED SCORES!! CASEMIRO SCORES!! Luke Shaw delivers an excellent cross inside the box from a freekick and Casemiro gets at the end of the cross to rattle the net with a solid header. However, there is a long pause for a VAR check for possible offside. But the check is complete and the goal is given .
Longstaff flashes across a dangerous ball across the face of the goal, which is not met by anyone. Saint-Maximin is the first to reach the ball and he got past Dalot, showing wonderful skill. His shot at goal is saved by De Gea at his near-post.
Schar and Martinez are both okay and the match will resume after a long pause.
Trippier whips a cross inside the box, which finds Schar who jumped to get a connection. There was a collision between Schar and Martinez as the ball was cleared. Both players are getting medical attention at the moment.
Guimaraes will continue for the moment as he makes his way back on the pitch after the customary exit.
Bruno Guimaraes has gone down without any challenge and that is always a worrying sight. He is getting the necessary medical attention.
Antony is not looking the most comfortable on the pitch at the moment. It seems to be an issue with his groin.
De Gea’s long goalkick finds Rashford who decides to not shoot and pass it to Antony. Antony cuts in and shoots with his favourite left foot. The ball goes straight to Karius.
Dalot swings a dangerous low cross from the left but Guimaraes is there to make the timely clearance.
Newcastle United cannot clear its lines and the ball falls kindly to Weghorst. He pulls the trigger but it is a weak effort by him. Karius collects the ball easily.
Booking: Diogo Dalot gets an early yellow card for his challenge on Saint-Maximin. This puts in a diffucult position for the rest of the match.
Another dangerous move by Newcastle- Saint-Maximim goes past Varane and tries to find Guimaraes inside the box. But, Fred is in a good position to make an important challenge.
Newcastle with its first counter attack of the match from a United corner. Almiron made a good run but his final pass was disappointing run- and Varane cleared the ball.
Shaw finds Rashford with a good ball as the latter makes a run down the left. He tries to roll down the ball in the path of Weghorst but the pass is cut out.
Karius gets an early touch of the ball as the United pressure from kick-off forced Newcaste players back in their own half.

In the earlier rounds of the Carabao Cup, matches went straight to penalties if scores were level at full-time.
However, this afternoon there will be extra-time and penalties at Wembley.
When did Manchester United last win a trophy?
Manchester United has another shot at ending its six-year trophy drought as it plays Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley Stadium on Sunday.
The Red Devils lifted its last trophy in the 2016-17 season, when they defeated Ajax 2-0 in the UEFA Europa League final, under then-manager Jose Mourinho. Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan scored in the 18th and 24th minute, respectively, to guide United to the title.

The Red Devils also won its last League Cup in the 2016-17 season after a 3-2 win against Southampton. Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored a brace, which included the match-winner and Jesse Lingard scored the other goal.

Marcus Rashford starts the final for Manchester United after that injury scare against Barcelona on Thursday.
Diogo Dalot comes in for Aaron Wan-Bissaka in the right-back position, while Antony replaces Jadon Sancho on the right flank. The Brazil international makes his first start since February 4 after recovering from an injury.

Manchester United will aim to end its six-year trophy drought when Erik ten Hag’s resurgent side faces Newcastle in Sunday’s League Cup final, while the Magpies’ Saudi-funded revolution could produce the club’s first major prize since 1969.
As underachieving members of English football’s aristocracy in recent years, United hopes the showpiece at Wembley can serve as a long-awaited rebirth.
However, revelling in its role as nouveau riche irritant to the Premier League’s established powers, Newcastle believes the final can serve as concrete proof it is now a force to be reckoned with.
United has not won a major trophy since the 2017 Europa League, a prize it claimed just weeks after beating Southampton in its most recent League Cup final appearance.
As if its longest trophy drought for 40 years wasn’t bad enough, United also suffered the indignity of watching bitter rival Manchester City surpass it as England’s preeminent football force.
United, which last won the title in 2013, finished a dismal sixth in the Premier League last term.
But after a decade in the wilderness, it has been revived by Ten Hag since his arrival from Ajax last year.
Crucially, Ten Hag’s handling of Cristiano Ronaldo showed he would not be intimidated by player power, bringing an end to the Portugal star’s second spell at United.
“He first arrived and the training sessions we had, he demands ‘you do it or you’re out’. You don’t play,” United midfielder Bruno Fernandes said.

“Everyone was a little bit like ‘If a big player doesn’t do what he wants will he pull him apart or not?’ And he did that many times, he did it with Cristiano, with Jadon (Sancho), with Marcus (Rashford).”
There is no more tangible sign of Ten Hag’s impact than the blistering form of revitalised United forward Rashford, who is battling to be fit for Wembley after suffering an injury in Thursday’s Europa League win against Barcelona.
Ten Hag has tried to temper expectations in his first season but he knows victory this weekend would be a meaningful moment for a club climbing out of the doldrums.
“It’s a great opportunity to get the silverware. The fans are really waiting for it and so we do everything we can to give them their honour,” Ten Hag said.
‘Rewrite the story’
Fuelled by the astute management of Eddie Howe and the financial muscle of their Saudi-backed owners, Newcastle is unlikely to be a pushover.
Once regarded as the laughing stock of the Premier League, Newcastle is emerging as a genuine force for the first time since Kevin Keegan’s ‘entertainers’ came close to winning the title in the 1990s.
It is an astonishingly rapid rise for a team that was mired in the relegation zone when Howe was hired soon after the £305 million ($376 million) takeover from unpopular former owner Mike Ashley in late 2021.
Saudi’s Public Investment Fund holds an 80 percent stake in the club, but Howe is the public face of Newcastle’s renaissance.
Despite a recent dip in form, Newcastle is fifth in the Premier League, just two places behind United.
This weekend, it is focused on winning the club’s first major trophy since the 1969 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup.
Newcastle’s last major domestic prize came in 1955 when they lifted the FA Cup.
For such a football-obsessed city to go decades without a trophy has been cruel punishment for the long-suffering ‘Toon Army’, who will be watching Newcastle’s first domestic final appearance since losing to United in the 1999 FA Cup.
Fittingly for a final offering potential catharsis to both clubs, Newcastle is set to start much-maligned goalkeeper Loris Karius.
Nick Pope’s suspension has given Karius a chance at redemption in his first competitive match in almost two years.
Karius is best known for his costly howlers in Liverpool’s 2018 Champions League final defeat against Real Madrid.
“It would be a magnificent chance for him to rewrite the story of his career,” Howe said.
“That’s the beauty of football. We never know what is going to happen. This unpredictability is what makes it such an amazing thing to watch.”
