Tony Finau equalled Gary Player's record of 10 birdies in a US PGA Championship round but only just made the cut at Bellerive Country Club.
Finau raised eyebrows when he birdied seven of the first eight holes in St. Louis on Friday, but hit the turn in 32 following a triple bogey at the sixth and a dropped shot at the ninth.
Inclement weather meant the 28-year-old had to return on Saturday to complete his second round and he had to settle for a four-under 66, finishing with 10 birdies, a triple bogey and three bogeys.
Finau would have broken the great Player's record had he birdied the last but instead dropped a shot, although he had already done enough to earn a place in rounds three and four.
Rickie Fowler was just two shots adrift of leader Gary Woodland after signing for a three-under 67.
