Former Olympic champion Dieter Baumann has announced his retirement from athletics at the age of 38 after a frustrating showing in the 2003 World Championships in Paris.
Baumann, who competed in the men's 10,000 metres final, was frustrated at his lack of energy but afterwards denied suggestions that he would hang up his running shoes.
However, the 38-year-old German has now called it quits on his glittering career. He won the 5,000 metres during the Barcelona Olympics in 1992, his crowning moment.
