This is the first time surfing is recognised as an Olympic sport.
Qualification process
Twenty athletes per gender can qualify for the Games, with only a maximum of four each per NOC. Quota places will be allocated in the following competitions
1. 2019 World Surf League Championship Tour (10 for men & 8 for women)
2. 2019 and 2020 ISA World Surfing Games (4 for men & 6 for women)
3. 2019 Pan American Games
