Here is all that is happening in the world of sports of Indian interest

WEIGHTLIFTING

The Indian dominance at the ongoing Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships continued on Day Three of the competition on Friday with the host lifters adding three more medals to the tally in the senior category to take the tally to 11.

While N Ajith, the reigning national champion and the lone Indian participant here from the Asian Games squad, topped in the 73kg with a combined lift of 308kg (138kg snatch+170kg clean and jerk), Ajay Singh defended his 81kg title with a 306kg lift to complete his hat-trick.

Among the women, Commonwealth Games medallist Harjinder Kaur finished second in the 71kg with a total lift of 211kg, five kilograms adrift of top-placed Jacqueline Nichele of Australia.

BADMINTON

India’s campaign comes to an end at the Badminton Asia Junior Championships

India’s campaign at the ongoing Badminton Asia Junior Championships came to an end on the third day as two girls’ singles players and one girls’ doubles pair lost in the round of 16 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia on Friday.

In the girls’ doubles pre-quarterfinal match, Taneesha and Karnika displayed a tough fight against the duo of Chen Fan Shu Tian and Jiang Pei Xi from China. The Indian pair started brilliantly in the first game and showed great coordination en route their 21-17 victory, but their opponents mounted a comeback in the last two games to win the tie with a scoreline of 21-17, 13-21, 13-21 in a match that lasted 50 minutes.

In the girls’ singles round of 16 matches, Rakshitha Sree S was up against China’s Huang Lin Ran. The Indian shuttler started well but could not find a sustained rhythm throughout the match before eventually losing with a score of 15-21, 13-21.

In the other girls’ singles pre-quarterfinal match, Tara Shah failed to find any momentum and went down 13-21, 8-21 against China’s XU Wen Jing in a one-sided affair.

BOXING

Junior Boys National Boxing Championships: Devang and Hemant shine as nine SSCB Boxers make their way into the finals at the

The services sports control board (SSCB) continued its domination as nine of its pugilists progressed into the finals on day 5 at the 5th Junior Boys National Boxing Championships in Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh.

Devang (54kg) gave the perfect start to team SSCB with a sensational 5-0 win over Uttar Pradesh’s Sundram Yadav. Devang looked at his absolute best in the bout and controlled the game throughout to grab the win. This is Devang’s third consecutive unanimous win in the competition. He will be up against Nenthok Hodong of Arunachal Pradesh in the summit clash.

Hemant Sangwan (80+kg), on the other hand, got the better of Maharashtra’s Saifali Zari in a unanimous decision win. He will face Vedant Dhauta of Himachal Pradesh in the finals.

Other SSCB boxers who sealed their spot in finals are Mahesh (48kg), Divash Katare (50kg), Sahil Baord (52kg), M Kabiraj Singh (63kg), Rahul Kundu (70kg), Sahil (75kg), Hardik Panwar (80kg).

In the 48kg category, Haryana’s Sikander put forward a stellar performance to grab the unanimous decision win against Maharashtra’s Ravindra Padvi in the semifinals. He will go head to head against Mahesh of SSCB in the quest to secure a gold medal.

Punjab’s Shriyansh (80kg) secured a spot in the finals with a convincing win over Hamza Mohd Ahmed of Telangana. He will take on Hardik Panwar of SSCB in the finals.

Four young pugilists from the host Arunachal Pradesh Techi Jacky (46kg), Gayki Rie (52kg), Nenthok Hodong (54kg), Tagio Liyak (57kg) will also fight to win the yellow metal in the finals.

Manishi sets up final against Yashika

Manishi Singh beat second seed Shagun Kumari 6-1, 6-4 to set up a title clash with Yashika Shokeen in the AITA National series junior tennis tournament at the Joygaon Academy on Friday.

The boys final will be between Swastik Sharma and Arjun Rathi.

Karman-Stacey pair stun top seeds Victoria and Renata in quarterfinals

Karman Kaur Thandi in partnership with Stacey Fung beat the top seeds Victoria Hu and Renata Zarazua 7-6(5), 6-4 in the doubles quarterfinals of the $60,000 ITF women’s tennis tournament in Saskatoon, Canada.

In the €145,000, Anirudh Chandrasekar and Vijay Sundar Prashanth beat Sumit Nagal and Manuel Guinard 6-2, 6-2 to make the doubles final.

GOLF

Atwal shoots 72 to be 29th in Senior PGA Tour

India’s Arjun Atwal overcame an early double bogey to manage a card of two-over 72 in the first round of the USD 3.5 million Kaulig Companies Championship in Ohio.

The Indian, playing his maiden season on the Seniors Tour for over 50s, was lying Tied-29th as the field was led by Steve Stricker and Harrison Frazar, who carded five-under 65 each.

Atwal, who finished T-11 in his first Senior start at Invited Celebrity Classic and was then T-49 in his first Senior Major, the Senior PGA, started with a double bogey on Par-4 first.

He then had three pairs of a birdie and a bogey on successive holes as he finished at 2-over 72 at Senior Tour’s fourth Major of the year.

Atwal became the only Indian to win on the PGA TOUR when he claimed the 2010 Wyndham Championship title.

Rookie Stewart Cink, making his second start on PGA TOUR Champions, sits in third after shooting four-under 66.

The 46-time PGA TOUR Champions winner Bernhard Langer, a three-time winner of the Kaulig Companies Championship (2014, 2015, 2016), opened with one-over 71 and sits at T20.

The World Golf Hall of Fame member played his first five holes three-under before carding four bogeys over his final 13 holes.

Two-time Kaulig Companies Championship winner (2020, 2022) Jerry Kelly also sits at T20 after opening with one-over 71.

The Kaulig Companies Championship is one of the PGA Tour Champions’ major events.
