With the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) claiming that the proposal to appoint Suresh Kalmadi and Abhay Chautala as Life Presidents never passed muster, the Sports Ministry, on Friday, followed up on its promise of revoking its suspension of the body.

“The government has decided to revoke the suspension of deemed recognition of IOA with immediate effect in the light of the corrective action taken by them in reversing its earlier decision, making Shri Abhay Singh Chautala and Shri Suresh Kalmadi, Life Presidents of IOA,” the ministry said in a statement.

The IOA, in its reply to the show-cause notice from the ministry had claimed that even though there had been a proposal from one of its members to make both the former IOA presidents as Life Presidents at the AGM in Chennai in December, it did not follow the constitutional rules or procedure and therefore was never voted upon. As such, the appointments were never formalised and the suspension was uncalled for.

“Since IOA has admitted the faux pas committed and regretted the inconvenience and embarrassment caused to all concerned, it is expected of IOA that it will uphold the highest standard of probity and ethics in its functioning in future,” the ministry added.
